Mall Seeks Reduction in Bus Service from Bridgeport

By Noreen Brown

There has been a proposal to reduce bus service to Trumbull Shopping Park from Bridgeport. This proposal mainly affects Bridgeport youths who spend their Fridays and Saturdays at the mall. There has been talk to cut off bus service after 4:00 p.m. This proposal affects both those who just want to shop and those of us who work in Trumbull. One Bridgeport youth, who works in Wilson's Leather Shop, said "The Trumbull officials are trying to keep the Black and Hispanic community from shopping in the mall."

Another mall employee who was interviewed does not believe the proposal really is a race issue, but it will inconvenience her. "It's going to make it hard for me to get to work and in the long run I think the mall will lose business."

One security guard I spoke to believes the proposal will benefit the mall. He felt the amount of disruptive behavior will decrease. When asked why the security guards break up the groups of four or five, he said, "The large groups block the hallways for other shoppers."

As a teenager who hangs out and shops in Trumbull, I believe my right to a public facility is being taken away. It is unfair to punish everyone from Bridgeport just because there are a few disruptive people.
