Commencement

By Emily Phan

It was a long, arduous journey; emotional, exhausting, and enlightening. It was frustration upon heartache upon disappointments; it was success upon contentment upon joy. It was high school.

For the illustrious senior, it is over. In the dust volumes of the senior mind we can find a chapter of those first days when we timidly crept down the hallways, terrified of being swallowed in that sea of faceless strangers. We now ponder incredulously how we could ever have considered wearing that old outfit in public, and if we only knew what we know now...

There is a chapter of those in our lives we'll hold dear; there is that chapter of those whom we would rather see buried in sloppy joe lunches. The inseparable friends of freshmen year sometimes became the arch enemies of sophomore year; while casual 'hellos' developed into affection and warmth. There is an earnestly written chapter of the teachers, the heroes, who have helped shaped the lives of flourishing minds.

Perhaps now we can giggle, though guardedly, about the time we fell down the stairs. We remember those friendships we had only on even numbered of years. We marvel at how teachers have miraculously managed to become warm hearted humans.

It seems so ironic, this circle that we travel. We have all been working towards a goal, some more fervidly than others, and all so that we may become freshmen once again.
