check out my blog / October 11 Got a new HOME. just uploaded ujp's june photoshoot. check them out. Last week, I missed my classes just to get a passport for a supposed-to-be Singapore trip. I didn't get it. There must be something wrong with them. I bet Ateneans grabbed those grants. I'm not bitter. i'm looking forward to that trip. It would be my first trip sana outside the country. In a week, I will be having my passport which would be futile. hindi pala. the moment I graduate, I would look into scholarships abroad or probably work there. Anyway, working domestically is not a big thing for me. The surest thing I want is to make rich. haha. My First Day Working @ PDI written at my cubicle in PDI Research Department,April 19
My first day at the Inquirer feels more like a week or so. A lot has happened since my first hour, 3pm, on the job.
First, we were asked to fill-up some sorts of forms. Sir Gani- the great Isagani Yambot, the PDI Publisher- welcomed us at his office. I was with Kristine Tinio, by the way. I was expecting an orientation with the city editor for the beat assignment, but it turned out not. Sir Gani then told us that one of us would be placed under the PDI Research Team for a week before going to the actual beat next week. Jokingly, he told us to do a ‘jak en poy’ and (un)lucky me lost. And ended up at the Research department. Haha.
I am not yet ready for the legwork, so I guess I won!
I am only just beginning to catch my breath.
Working for the Inquirer is not like joining the ROTC (yuck, ROTC memories), but it comes close. Everywhere, every minute the tempo is fast. Rush through this, zip through that. News comes and goes so quickly you have to speed along. On the way, the real learning begins – a kind of learning I didn’t imagine.
In UP CMC, I was taught the basics of the 5 Wives and 1 Husband, the concepts of objectivity and advocacy, the journalist’s code of ethics, the three supreme rules of accuracy, accuracy, accuracy.
I am a PDI scholar so I am here at the Inquirer for my internship. I knew my stuff. For few hours, may na-realize ako -that the theories and concepts I learned in school were not enough. A quick mind and ready feet were required, too. O di ba, on my first day, may na-realize! Haha.
As research assistant, my primary job involves finding, collecting, processing and finally using news and information that could help clarify issues that matter to the nation’s life. Yuck! This means preparing research materials in a variety of forms, from special reports to graphs, from spot news stories to boxes of nugget-sized data about people, places, things and events. nerdiness.
It’s very unpredictable and therefore exciting. One minute I’m preparing a FACTS MACHINE for Inquirer Libre’s May issue, and a second later, I’m checking the database for follow-up stories.
So much for these. Eto, sa Inquirer pala, galante ang mga tao. I so much love PDI na talaga. Kanina, Sir Gani called Shakey’s for the day’s merienda. Food flooded the office- palabok, puto, mojos, pizza, chicken, ice cream, lumpia, refreshments. Libre! Burp. Eto pa, free internet usage. I have my own cubicle, and PC. Talk about PERKS. Undermanned daw ang research kaya ayun, for the meantime, I will be staying here for the next three days. Sir Mike, a researcher, told me to try the afternoon shift, meaning, 1-9pm. May service shuttle daw naman kami, L300 van daw. Hatid ako sa Philcoa, wooohooo! PERKS talaga.
It is so unusual of me feeling this way. The pressure is enough to make me want to run around like a headless chicken. But always after the storm, there’s a giddy feeling at having achieved something no matter how little. The next day of course it's a new story, a different cast of characters, a fresh start. It’s fun. All Rights Reserved | |||||||||||
