My Vision
I read in an article found in Poets and Writers (vol.22, issue 2) a long
time ago that "Everything is held together with stories. That is all
that is holding us together, stories and compassion". This has been
a key idea in my own personal values and I guess that is why I have carried
them around with me for so long. This also helps to express the two
key components I believe are essential to being an effective storyteller
in the Camarilla.
I paid my membership fee to join the Camarilla two days before my 18th birthday.
I practically ran the whole way to the game with my fresh new character sheet
in hand ready to immerse myself in the make-believe world of White Wolf's
creation. From that day I committed myself and a great deal of my spare
time (and at times a bit too much time) to the as both a game and a non-profit
organization.
I was first introduced to the garou venue when a friend of mine forcibly
made me attend a game. My thoughts were "why would I want to go play
a slobbering monster when I can go play Vampire?" Under protest, I
made a character and attended. What I found at that session was an
introduction to a venue so rich in history, ritual, politics, intrigue and
a spirituality that I found both intriguing and captivating. Since
that game I have only wanted to know more, devouring any source book I can
get my hands on and I have developed a real love for the game.
My key aspects of the venue that I would want to focus on are: educating
the members on the venue, developing a national identity for the game, developing
a clear standard of approvals for Canada, and to promote inter-regional interaction
between the various domains.
My vision for Canada is to introduce to those members who don't play garou
to the idea that it is a venue unlike any other. There are so many
misconceptions about the game, and I would want to make a conscious effort
to help clear those up. I can't count the number of times that I have
heard players say "but I like the politics of Cam/Anarchs" or "but I want
to high fantasy aspect of Changeling". I say that garou is only as
limited as the player and STs imaginations. Dare to dream. Perhaps
the most intriguing part about garou, and one thing I always tell inquiring
new players is this: consider yourself as the person you are now discovering
an anger that is boiling deep underneath, hiding in the corners of your soul...
this is something that you can't explain or understand... but it's there, like
the burden, bitterness and anger of a thousand souls lived and lost. Imagine
that you, a normal human being with a normal life suddenly learned that you
are part of something so much larger than you are and the fate of the world
is suddenly in your hands. The thing is anyone who knows what
it is to be human can understand garou. This is something that I want
to share with the Canadian members and I believe that through promotion and
education of the venue, we will be able to draw more members.
Developing a national identity is perhaps the most important issue that would
need to be addressed by the national ST team. Canada as a nation has
such a rich and unique identity and to draw that into the game is such a
wonderful opportunity not only to develop the venue but also to learn more
about our country and the overwhelming diversity found within it. I
would hope to do this by introducing and educating the players are about
the culture of the native peoples, particularly of the Inuit. Inuit
studies is something that I am very much interested in and I have found in
my studies that their way of life is very much like the culture that White
Wolf has presented to us in the Garou source material. I would hope
to expand on this through the development of the venue's history and settings
development.
I whole-heartedly support the idea of working hand in hand with the
VP-ST and the NST staff of the Unites States, Europe and Australia and I
hope to see that we someday work towards a unified rules structure.
However, I believe that Canada is very unique and we should identify those
differences in the way that we run our games. My intentions would be,
on a long-term scale, to work with the STs of Canada to develop a unique
approval rating for Canada. There are certain aspects of the WoD that
simply have no place in Canada's game and other aspects that should
be focused on.
I would also want to help the domains work with each other, by both expanding
on their own plotlines and working with new ones developed by the national
ST staff. I stand firm in my belief that the greatest resource that
any role-player or ST can have access to is the experience of another person.
By developing this interaction we will be increasing the depth of the story
of every venue game and I think that in the end all will benefit from it.
On a final note, I just wanted to say that beyond my vision of the direction
for the venue in Canada, I should point out my strengths and weaknesses to
be considered.
My strengths are an eagerness to learn and I pride myself on being an open-minded
person, willing to listen and consider any well-presented idea, even if I
don't agree with it at first glance. I consider myself to be very approachable,
compassionate and friendly. When I talk with members I talk to them
like equals, never losing sight of the idea that I am doing what I do for
them and only for them. I believe in open communication and total honesty
when dealing with members, although never forgetting to be tactful and considerate
of the feelings of others. I am committed and responsible and try to
commit to attainable goals and meeting them within a set schedule.
Lastly, I have a driving passion for this game and want to be able to help
others explore the depth of story, drama and intrigue that it brings.
My area that I can identify that needs development is my knowledge of the
working rules mechanics. I am not a rules lawyer and believe that a
good story always takes precedence over rules. I understand that the
position of venue St for Canada will require a solid knowledge of the working
rules systems. I am still learning and am committed to continue to
learn, but it would be dishonest of me to not admit to this shortcoming.
Even if I am not given the privilege of being a member of the national ST
team, I hope offer any assistance I can to the great deal of work that lies
ahead in the months to come.
