When I opened my eyes in the morning for a second I thought I was back in California and everything had been a dream. I then realized that I was in Florida at Nick’s house and it wasn’t a dream. It was 10:30 in the morning so I decided to get up and see if Nick and Vanessa were awake. When I knocked on their door it opened a little that’s when I saw them lying on the floor asleep. They looked so happy in each other’s arms in couldn’t wake them. But I didn’t have to the phone ringed and it woke them.
“Hello?” Nick said and laid back on the floor with Vanessa.
“Hey have you guys heard from Angela today? Did I wake you?” AJ had been calling me since the night before but thought that I must be out. He tried this morning but I still wasn’t there. I also hadn’t answered any of his messages he’d left. He decided to see if I had told Vanessa if I was mad at him or not.
“No I'm awake I'm so awake,” he said opening his eyes and looking at Vanessa remembering what happened last night put a smile on his face.
“What about Angela have you guys heard from her?”
“No I haven’t.”
“Can you ask Vanessa?”
Nick put his hand over the mouthpiece of the phone and woke up Vanessa.
“Vanessa wake up. AJ’s on the phone he wants to know if you’ve heard from Angela. I don’t know what to tell him.”
“Here give me the phone.” Vanessa said thinking of what she would tell AJ. “Hey AJ what’s up?”
“Have you talked to Angela recently has she said anything about being mad at me?”
“Yeah I talked to her last night.”
“You did? Where was she? Did she say she was mad at me?”
“She’s wasn’t at home. I don’t think she’s mad at you either. If I talk to her again I’ll tell her to give you a call. I’ll talk to ya later. Bye.” Vanessa hung the phone up before AJ could say anything else. “We need to talk to Angela,” she said getting up to hang up the phone.
When I heard her say that I knew that she was going to come to my room so I ran. I got back to my room and jumped in bed. I was still trying to catch my breath when she walked in.
“Angela, are you awake?” as she said that she started shaking the bed.
I rolled over and pretended to just be waking up. “I am now, what time is it?”
“It’s almost 11 in the afternoon. Come on, get up and get dressed the three of us are going to get some lunch. We also need to talk to you.” Even so I knew what she was going to talk to me about I was still nervous cause I knew that I would have to face this.
When Vanessa walked back into her room Nick was done changing and was just fixing his hair.
“I woke her up,” she said as she changed in a white tank top and a pair of denim shorts. Nick had almost the same thing on but his shorts were khaki.
We went to the same little Mexican restaurant Nick and Vanessa had lunch with AJ and Amanda at a couple days ago. I guess they didn’t remember at first not until the waitress came to take our order.
“Hi my name is Amanda, how may I help you.” The waitress looked about 19 she looked kind of nervous maybe it was her first day or something.
After she left Vanessa said, “That reminds of when we came here before with…” she stopped when Nick softly elbowed her in the ribs. “What was that for?” She looked at him and the way he was looking at her must have told her what that was for. “Oh yeah I forgot.”
“What you guys came here before with someone. Who did you come with and why doesn’t Nick want you to talk about it?” It felt like they were trying to hide something from me and I wanted to know what.
“Well …. We didn’t want to say anything until later but…” Vanessa looked at Nick. “I'm gonna tell her okay.”
Nick looked at Vanessa. ”Oh you mean about… okay go ahead."
“We came here a few days and… Nick asked me to marry him!” she lied hoping to sound convincing.
“Are you serious!?” I asked. “That’s great!”
Vanessa held out her hand and showed off her ring. She was so happy. Nick looked so proud. They were so happy together. Nick then put his hand over Vanessa’s and pushed it down. He was looking behind me.
“There you guys are!” I froze as I heard the voice behind me. Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“Hey AJ what's up?” Nick said sounding not surprised to see AJ.
I felt his hand touch my back. “I’ve been trying to get a hold of you for a few days now. When did you fly in?” He sat down in the chair next to me. I looked at him. He didn’t look the same as he did the last time I saw him. He had dark circles under his eyes and it looked as if he hadn’t shaved in a couple days.
“Hello?” He waved his hand in front of my face.
“Oh, I, you know what, I don’t know but I have to use the restroom. Excuse me.” I stood up and quickly walked away.
I got inside the restrooms and walked over to the sinks. I stood there looking in the mirror and splashed some water on my face. “Shit!” I yelled as I looked back into the mirror and saw that I had mascara running down my face. I forgot that I was wearing makeup. Vanessa poked her head in.
“Hey, you alright?” She walked in and stood next to me as I wiped off my makeup. I looked at her and shook my head.
“I cannot believe you two would do this to me!” I shouted at her. “You know damn well that I'm not ready to see him! I don't know about you two but I'm getting the hell out of here…. This is so fucked up…” I was mumbling to myself as I wiped the last of the mascara away.
“You know what you’ve been so wrapped up in your problems you didn’t even notice that….you know what never mind” Vanessa started walking away.
“Wait!” I rolled my eyes “What is that I'm not noticing that could be so important?”
Vanessa stopped and turned around. “AJ just told us that his grandmother has been sick. He didn’t want to tell us anything because he didn’t want to worry us. And on top of that he has been having problems with Amanda. I guess they’ve been arguing a lot lately. I guess that’s why he’s been trying to get a hold of you because he needs someone there for him other than his mother that really understands him.”
I stood there thinking of all those messages he left me saying that he really needed to talk to me and how I just ignored them and avoided him.
“I know. I shouldn’t have been avoiding him. He doesn’t even know…. I've been such an ass to him!” I felt so horrible. Thinking of all those times I blew him off. “Let’s go sit down and eat some lunch!!”
I sat back down next to AJ. I looked at him again. He was smiling at the joke Nick had just told, but his eyes didn’t have the same sparkle as they did when I saw him last.
He looked at me. “Are you just gonna keep staring at me? You haven't said one word to me since I’ve been here.”
“No I'm just not feeling well. I haven’t eaten anything all day yet and it’s upsetting my stomach.” I smiled at him.
“Or maybe it’s the baby.” Nick said shoving a chip loaded with salsa in his mouth.
My eyes popped open and so did Nick’s and Vanessa’s. I glanced at AJ to see if he noticed what Nick said.
“So where is that waitress. I'm ready to order. How ‘bout you Nick you hungry… I know I'm hungry…”
Vanessa was rambling on to try to take the attention from Nick’s statement.
“Hell yeah I'm hungry…..”
“Wait one minute,” AJ said. He looked at me “Maybe it’s the ‘baby’, what's that supposed to mean?”
I didn’t look at him. I reached for my purse. And pulled out the ultrasound picture. I looked at it for a minute before handing it to him.
Nick and Vanessa sat there quietly.
“You know what Nick I forgot something in the car, come help me get it.”
She looked at Nick. He just sat there staring at AJ and I.
“Nick!” She whispered loudly.
“Oh yeah, the thing in the car… We’ll be right back.”
AJ looked at the ultrasound. “Is this a baby?”
I nodded my head.
“Your baby?” He said slowly.
I looked at him through blurry eyes.
“Our baby.”
