I sat there looking at the phone. I sighed. I think I was too sad to cry or maybe I was too confused. Why didn’t AJ tell me he was with Amanda? Maybe he thought it was none of my business. Should I be angry with him? I guess not, he thought I didn’t want to be anything but friends. Oh well…I jumped as the phone rang. I didn’t feel like answering it but I did on the third ring.
“Hello?” I said with an empty tone.
“It’s me,” AJ said. “I just got back from Nick’s, he said they lost the letter you wrote. So you should just tell me what’s up.”
“Oh, I just wanted to let you know that I'm really glad we stayed friends through all of this.” I wanted to tell him the truth but I didn’t want to ruin whatever he and Amanda had-even though she had interfered when I was with him.
“Well I'm glad we’re still friend too. Is that all the letter said?”
“Yeah…I…Uhhh…that’s it. So what are you up to?”
“Well I'm on my way to have lunch. I'm on my cell and I don’t think the batteries are going to be working for much longer so I’ll talk to you later.”
“Okay Bye.”
“So Vanessa what do you want to do today?” Nick asked as he rummaged through his drawers.
“You look so cute with that towel wrapped around your waist,” she said getting out of bed.
Nick blushed slightly. “Well thank you but that doesn’t answer my question.”
“First I'm going to take a shower, then get dressed then how about we go have so breakfast…”
“You mean lunch,” Nick said.
“Okay lunch, then we come back here and spend the rest of the day together right here. Just you and me.”
“Sounds like a plan.” Nick smiled as Vanessa kissed his back then wrapped her arms around him.
“I missed waking up with you,” she said. Nick turned around and returned her hug. She rested her head on his bare chest.
“So did I,” Nick said squeezing her slightly. “Well I'm going to get dressed now so why don’t you go ahead and jump in the shower.”
“Your wish is my command,” she said in a funny accent as she walked into the bathroom.
“I’ll remember that for later,” Nick said as she closed the door.
“So I was thinking instead of fast food we go this nice little Mexican place for lunch,” Nick said as he pulled out of the driveway.
“Mmmm…that sounds like a really good idea,” Vanessa said.
Soon they were pulling into the parking lot of a pink restaurant with a beautiful painting of palm trees and colorful birds on the outside.
“Hey that looks like AJ truck,” Nick said as they walked past a black expedition. “Actually I think it is AJ truck,” he said taking a quick peek inside.
They got into the restaurant. “I guess we seat ourselves,” Nick said pointing to a sign that said ‘Seat yourselves’. They walked in and looked around.
“Oh, how about that one over there by the little palm tree,” Vanessa said pointing it out to Nick.
“Whatever you want you got,” he said as they started to walk over there.
“Nick!” someone said and grabbed his arm as he walked by. He jumped, startled alittle then turned around.
“Amanda, you scared the sh…, you scared me,” he said.
“AJ look who’s here!” she said smiling.
AJ looked up from his menu, “Uh, Huh.” He said looking back down.
“Ooh, you brought your girlfriend, I'm sorry I don’t remember your name.”
“Vanessa,” she said not wanting to sound too friendly.
“Well were gonna go sit down…” Nick started.
“Why don’t you join us. There are two more chairs here. AJ and I would love your company, right AJ?”
“Yeah sure grab a seat and sit down,” AJ looked at Vanessa. He could tell she really didn’t want to but she sat down anyway.
“You remember Amanda don’t you Vanessa?” AJ asked.
“How could I forget?” she said with a fake smile.
“Oh, we didn’t exactly get off on the right foot did we? Well look I'm sorry you had to see the ugly jealous side of me but I'm really not like that. I don’t know what came over me back then. Just seeing AJ with another woman…I…I'm extremely sorry for my actions…and please tell Angela I would like to apologize to her.”
Vanessa looked at her. It was hard to dislike her cause she sounded so sincere. Vanessa softened alittle, “Well that’s okay. I guess I can understand alittle…” she started.
“Oh speaking of Angela,” AJ said. “I bought her a few things I want you to take back to her. An outfit and a few bracelets and stuff…”
“Yes they are really nice,” Amanda interrupted. “I tried to make him get her a pair of boots to match the outfit he got but he couldn’t remember her shoe size.”
Vanessa and Nick looked at each other unable to believe their ears.
“Um, sure I'm leaving in three days. I could take a few extra things back with me.”
“Thanks,” AJ said as the waitress walked up to take their orders.
“That was very good,” Vanessa said as they drove back to Nick’s place.
“So what do you think of Amanda?” Nick asked.
“She’s…well she…damn it I like her! Angela won’t be happy but I can’t help it.”
Nick laughed. “She is nice, but her and AJ…they get along and everything but…I don’t know. Something’s just not there. Like it AJ is different when he’s with her. I can’t explain it. Nevermind.”
“Well Nick I don’t know but I think she is really nice.”
“No, she is…but I just can’t explain what it is with her and AJ.”
