Friendsville Friends Church

The Friendsville Friends Meeting was established in 1808 as the Newberry Preparative Meeting.  In 1875 the name was changed to Friendsville in order to make it the same as the Quarterly Meeting.  The current meetinghouse was built from 1871 through 1878.  In 1951, the white frame building was bricked, the inside totally refurbished, and an educational wing was added.  The meeting has around 100 members with attendance at Sunday worship services averaging 50 members.  Other gatherings include Sunday School, choir practice, and small group meetings that are held in member homes during the week.  Friendsville Friends Meeting is associated with the Wilmington Yearly Meeting headquartered in Wilmington, Ohio.

A newly remodeled parsonage is adjacent to the meetinghouse.  The main level has three bedrooms, two baths, living room, kitchen, and dining room which opens onto a large, enclosed deck.  It also has a two-car garage with a utility room.  The basement level has an office, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, storage room, and a large recreation room.

Below the parsonage is a pavilion with a 30’ x 50’ dining area and an enclosed kitchen.  Picnics. fish fries, ice cream socials, and other gatherings are held here.  Restrooms and a storage area are being added at this time.

Friendsville is a small East Tennessee town located in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains.  The town’s population is close to 1,000.  There are two Baptist Churches, a Methodist Church, and a non-denominational Church.  Friendsville has a public and a private elementary school.  TVA lakes less than one mile away offer boat docks and excellent fishing.  Maryville is a growing city within 10 miles offering many restaurants, a mall, and other shopping centers.
