Their Job Was To
The Gestapo were known as the Nazi State Police.  The Gestapo's main tool that enabled them to do what they wanted was the "protective custody" procedure.  This allowed the Gestapo to take action against the "enimies of the Reich".
The SS were known the protection squad.  They first began as Hitler's bodyguards, but then they became a private Nazi army.  This army opperated separate from the regular German army.  Lastly, they became a part of the Third Reich.
The Lives of Others Were Effected By The Gestapo and The SS In Many Ways
Both the Gestapo and the SS affected the lives of many people, particualarly those who lived in Nazi occupied areas.  The Gestapo, through a "political section", could order prisoners be released, tortured, or even executed.  Such treatment of people even extended to places such as the victim's own basement.  The Gestapo also adopted methods which provided "excuses" for killing people.  They created a way to fabricate natural casues of death, or even say that the prosoner(s) had been "shot whlie trying to escape."  Then there were others, considerably the Jews, who were sent to consentration camps, where they were in forced labour, or they were killed in huge masses.
Enemies of the State
These were people other than the Jews that the Nazi didn't like.  They were often mistreated, and were thought to be "outsiders" and "undesirable".  These people included Gypsies, Jehovah's Witnesses, and homosexuals.  Others were Soviet prisoners, Polich Catholics, Serbians, and the hadicapped.  All of these people were sent to consentration camps, and were under police guard.
Who was Reinhard Heydrich?
Reinhard Heydrich was the Lieutenant General of the SS.  He was the head of the Reich Security, which also included the Gestapo.  Also, Reinhard Heydrich led the Wannsee Conference of January 1942.  During this conference, the coordination of the "final solution" was discussed.  He was also the leading person in the "final solution".  He was assassinated May 27, 1942.  He lived from about 1904- 1942.  Lastly, he was known as "the man with the Iron Heart".
