If you are considering purchasing a Smooth or Wire Fox Terrier puppy its always advisable to do a little research 1st go to our Breeder's Page for contact numbers and you will find breeder's willing to help with any questions you may have about the Fox Terrier.
Country of origin is Great Britain where they were originally used for locating foxes in their dens, killing vermin and hunting rabbits, today they are still used for hunting but more so as family pets.
Fox Terriers get on well with children and make ideal family pets, but they do have to be socialised from an early age especially with other dogs and household pets and no animal should ever be left with a child unsupervised. It is a good idea to enroll you puppy in a puppy pre-school classes contact your local Vet about puppy socialising classes or contact Canine Control Council Queensland for details of an obedience club near you, they may be troublesome with other dogs if not properly socialised.
A dog will be what you make of it so spending time training is a must, no dog gets smart all on its lonesome.
Fox Terriers are of a fun loving nature would most certainly get him into trouble if left to its own devices, puppies need lots of attention and should be in a home were someone is home most of the day, if you are not able to be at home during the day maybe an adult dog would be more suitable if you work long hours, sometimes breeder's have older animals available for placement. Consider that a Fox Terrier is a baby puppy until he is 12 months old as are all dogs, from 12 months to 2 years of age consider them as a teenager. There are advantages to both puppy's and adult dogs, consider the age and the amount of time you have before buying a Fox Terrier.
Smooth Fox Terriers are an easy care dog and only need a good brush and bath but they will shed and extra grooming is required when they change coat as will all dogs.
Many people that have a pet Wire Fox Terrier have them clipped, this softens the coat and reduces the density of the colour and then they will not shed hair.
Hair grows in the ears and must be regularly removed. To keep them in Show condition you must hand strip them, this requires tuition, which a breeder can help you with.
They are a high energy dog that will want to play and be part of your family if you don't have the time for fun then a Fox Terrier is not the dog for you. A securely fenced yard is a must for any dog something else to consider before buying a dog and when walking a leash is a must as no dog should ever be allowed to run loose in public.
