Marg Macdonald
Cards expressing our sympathy were given to Arthur Willan and Don Weber. We visited Doris Bruder who is again in hospital and gave her a card. Ted Blood was also in hospital and received a card and chocolates after he got home. Jim Brodie, Larry Kraemer and Al Keith had surgery and received cards and goodies to help in their recovery. Wally Morrison also had day surgery and received our best wishes.

tfill.gif SOCIAL COMMITTEE UPDATE
Val Grant
Out of the proceeds from the Silent Auction, a $400 donation was made on behalf of Foxboro to Freeport/St. Mary's Hospital. Thank you to all residents who supported this event.

The Social Committee voted to give a donation to the Grounds Committee so that a reception could be held for all those men and women who worked so hard to free our lake of weeds. The community is very appreciative of the hard work that has taken place and is still ongoing. The lake is looking wonderful! Thank you.

tfill.gif A BIG THANK YOU
Al Keith
The pancake committee wish to thank all who participated in our last pancake breakfast. The feedback we got was very gratifying. Remember, this is not primarily a fundraising event but a social event. Modest proceeds do get turned over to the Social Committee after each breakfast. We are planning for next year to hold breakfasts in the months of May and September. As long as we get willing volunteer support from men in our community, it will be a go. A very sincere thank you from all the breakfasters and the pancake committee, to the men who worked to make the breakfast yet again a fun and satisfying event.

tfill.gif A FRIENDLY REMINDER

TO ALL RESIDENTS
Please check your medication list in your refrigerator to make sure it is up-to-date. Those who need new medication lists please look in the file folder in the mail room under Care Committee. tfill.gif LCBO WINE SAMPLING EVENING
Judy Nussey
Once again the LCBO from New Hamburg is bringing a representative from an Ontario vineyard to entice us with some of their wines. The date is November 4th. Watch for the sign-up sheet. Space will be limited (80-90 people). But, please, if you sign up and cannot come, let us know as there will be a list of spares. The cost is a voluntary donation which will go to a local charity. Hope to see you there!

tfill.gif BINGO! BINGO! BINGO!

Residents came out to enjoy an evening of luck at the September 26th Bingo night. Helga Stamm won 4 times and wasn't even at Bingo. Jackpot winner was Elaine Hill. Again, we thank Ron Bleier for his hours of calling the Bingo games. Remember the next Bingo night will be Friday, November 14th, at 7:30 p.m. Bring a friend and let's get out and have some fun Also, a friendly reminder exact change would be greatly appreciated when buying your bingo cards. Thank you.

On Monday past, I handed over to Sandra Snell the fabric for the Cuddle Quilts that go to the Family Resource Centre in New Hamburg. We have given the Centre about 165 Cuddle Quilts over the past 5 years. These quilts are given to the children caught up in family struggles who use the Resource Centre safe house. It has been my pleasure to be able to design, sew and deliver these quilts along with a number of Foxboro ladies. Sandra will be accepting fabric for toppers, flannelette for the backing and batting for the middle. A donation from the Social Committee was gratefully appreciated and over $100.00 was spent on flannelette and quilt batting. Any donations are gratefully appreciated. Anyone wishing to sew these 4" squares, or help tie, should get in touch with Sandra. She would be delighted to have the help. We used to get together at the Centre on Thursday mornings, but as people got busier that group was disbaned. It was a fun time. Thank you all for the support given to us, and mostly to the ladies who gave of their time to work on the Cuddle Quilts. The ladies at the F.R.C. really appreciate the quilts, just a small way to give comfort and help from our community

tfill.gif PROGRESSIVE EUCHRE
Sandy Moore
Again this fall and winter, progressive euchre will be played every Tuesday, 1:30 p.m. at the Rec Centre. We play 8 games or until 4 p.m., whichever comes sooner. The cost is $1.00, which is returned to the players as prize money each week. Prizes are awarded for high score (40%), most euchres (20%), most lone hands (20%) and a "surprise prize" (20%). These prizes are awarded in the order shown and in order to spread the good cheer around, you can only win one prize per week. This year we will be asking that members of our euchre group take turns on a monthly basis, setting up and managing the afternoon. Bill Hall will handle the balance of September, Jan & Bob Price will see to October, and Janice & I are responsible for the month of November. Sometime during November we will be seeking volunteers for December, January, etc. Everyone is welcome - just sign up on the sheets posted in the mailroom before Tuesday morning. If you signed up and are unable to play either, obtain a replacement, remove your name from the list, or call one of the monthly contact persons.

We look forward to seeing all of our friends again at this enjoyable event.

tfill.gif MEN'S ANNUAL GOLF SCRAMBLE
Jocelyn Kennedy
Friday, September 19th, featured a great, grand and fun-filled celebration which has become an annual event. At this year's banquet, 40 tireless, macho, male, Foxboro golfers, who had swung their clubs a minimum of sixty-seven times each the day before, at the Foxboro Golf Course just next door, were acknowledged. At 7 p.m., accompanied by their ladies, each team found its assigned table, and soon the sounds of levity and good fellowship was being shared by all along with a wonderful dinner. Hurricane Isabel, by then downgraded to a tropical storm, enabled Ken Smith, everyone's favourite Master of Ceremonies and intrepid organizer, to rip off a few rollicking bons mots with impunity! As everyone in the room knew full well, every team could not emerge in first place (if so, what would be the point of a scramble) nevertheless, the most worthy were recognized.

Winning team came in 3 under par:

Ken Smith
Pete Bond
Stan Harris
Peter Soloman

Tied for 2nd at even par:
Jim Arbuckle
Don Weber
Maurice Dean
Bill Waylett
Wally Heinbuch
Brian McKelvey
Don Corker
Al Keith
Andy Schaffer's and George Usaty's teams tied for 4th place at 1 over par. And what about those other good sports upon whom the golf gods did not smile? Just remember that well-known quote which says, something to the effect that the first shall be last and the last shall be first next time perhaps, you never know! And then there was May Aquilina, our resident poetess, whose thoughts on the subject of winning and competing brought smiles and chuckles to all our faces. Thanks May, and thanks to our brave golfers. We love and admire you all!!!

May Aquilina
Hurricane Isabel
Was coming up this way
Thus the men's golf tourney
Was rescheduled to Thursday.

I think this must have really
Made this team come undone
There's no other explanation
For bombing Number One.

Especially when off the tee
The ball went whizzing far
The green was just a shot away
It seemed an easy par.

There is no other reason
T'was Isabel, for heaven's sake
For how can our great golfers
Put all four shots in the lake?

When they trudged to Number Two
Downhearted sure they'd feel
Ross's cart then wobbles
And decides to lose a wheel. This day!!

When the wheels came off
And four balls in the drink
You'll blame it on a woman,
Lusty Isabel, I think.

tfill.gif MEET THE CANDIDATES NIGHT
Val Grant
Come out and meet the candidates who have agreed to stand for election in our Foxboro Green community. This event will take place at the Recreation Centre in Salons A & B, on Thursday, October 23rd at 7:00 p.m. tfill.gif BOOK CLUB
Jean Usaty
The Book Club will be held on the second Tuesday of each month. On October 14th, we will meet to make up our list of books to read in 2004 and to discuss our September book, "Single & Single" by John Le Carre. Please bring your book suggestions to our meeting, but remember that current bestsellers are not available to us in large enough numbers, so the books should be at least 12 months old. We welcome any book buffs who wish to join us at 7:30 in the library. Happy Reading!

tfill.gif SUMMER DINNER CLUB POTLUCK
JoAnne Brodie
The Potluck Dinner for the Summer Dinner Club will be held on Saturday, October 25th. Watch for the sign up sheet for the Winter Dinner Club on the bulletin board in the mail room after October 25th. For an enjoyable evening of meeting with your neighbours, good food and fun, consider joining.

tfill.gif A FIRST FOR FORBORO GREEN
Lucille Balcomb
A GRANDMA'S BABY SHOWER was held Sept. 11th on the deck of Lucille Balcomb's home. Jeanne Malich is the "Grandmother in Waiting". Her daughter Heidi is due to deliver in early October in Florida. A word of explanation..due to limited space, only Spruce Grove ladies were able to be invited. (We understand some of the husbands were disappointed they weren't included.) Many lovely gifts were given and best of all, it REALLY WAS A SURPRISE! To everyone's delight ,Sue Alves, in her everyday hospital garb, presented Jeanne with a newborn "baby" direct from the delivery room. For the occasion. the always entertaining Mary Penner, sang a couple of songs and had some appropriate readings which were fun. Perhaps "baby Haley's" arrival will beat the press closing date for Fox Talk. Now back to the drawing board for the next Spruce Grove Spectacular.

*NOTE OF THANKS FROM JEANNE MALICH TO THE LADIES ON SPRUCE GROVE AVE.
As of press time, "baby Haley" had not arrived.
Many thanks to all the ladies that attended the "Surprise" Baby Shower for all the wonderful gifts that were received. We do have a terrific community with so many caring people. Lucille sure did put one over on me this time. This was supposed to be just a Tea Party

This is just a reminder that the annual membership fees are now due. Please submit your fee to either Jack Koehler or myself as soon as possible, especially if you are planning to head south for the winter.

tfill.gif NOMINATING/ELECTION COMMITTEE
Val Grant
The Nominating Committee has now contacted 98% of residents. If for some reason, you have not been notified and you wish to run as a candidate, please contact any member of the Nominating Committee. On October 30th, we will be holding elections for the Board of Directors. As of September 25th, we have three candidates willing to run. If we get four candidates, there will not be an election, but the four (or fewer) candidates will win by acclamation.
If there are not enough candidates, the Board can appoint a person to serve, and they could be from outside this community. Naturally, residents of Foxboro Green sitting on the Board of Directors would serve our best interests, but if there are not enough willing candidates, they might have to come from outside.
The deadline for candidates to step forward is October 7th, and an election package will be mailed out on October 10th. If you are going to be away at this time, please give Theresa Tewfik, our Property Manager, your address, so that you will receive the package. Proxies will also be available from Theresa, after the candidate deadline of October 7th.
If you have any questions or concerns pertaining to this election, please contact any member of the Nominating Committee (see list on easel in Rec. Centre), or the present Board of Directors.

tfill.gif LITERARY EVENT
Marg Macdonald
Monday, October 27th Canada's Best-Selling Author Visits Foxboro.
Frances Itani whose novel, "Deafening" is now #1 on the Canadian best-sellers list (Maclean's) reads from her book on October 27th at 2 p.m. in our Rec Centre. "Deafening" is a novel based on the story of her grandmother who became deaf as a result of scarlet fever as a baby. She overcomes adversity with the support of her hearing husband who served in the army in WW 1. Fran develops a powerful story developing the deaf and war themes throughout. Alistair MacLeod states, "This exceptional novel moves from the silence of the deaf to the cacophony of the Front during World War 1. There are scenes in Deafening which will never be forgotten. From the haunting effects of a childhood disease to the random horrors of war, the uncertainties that become certainties have seldom been so well explored. Tremendously moving..."In her own words "I worked so hard on the book for six years, I did a lot of research, volunteer work in the deaf community and learned sign language." She also interviewed many veterans of WW 1 in order to create the dramatic scenes in her book.
Fran Itani is a nursing classmate of Marg Macdonald, The Montreal General Hospital Class of '63. Fran nursed in intensive care for eight years after graduation. She left nursing to pursue her writing career. She has published eights books of poems and short stories prior to this, her first novel. The publishing rights to this novel have been sold in twenty countries and the book will be published in Japanese, German, French, Dutch, Spanish, etc.
We are very fortunate that Fran is able to come as a part of her author tour. She will read from the book and then answer questions related to her writing and the book content. Books will be available for purchase and Fran will be happy to sign them.
After the reading, we will be serving tea and sweets. We will have a basket out for donations to the Care Committee, so please bring your spare change. Looking forward to seeing you there!

tfill.gif HORSESHOES/SHUFFLEBOARD BBQ
Sandy Moore
Once again, we have come to the end of the horseshoe season. This year 4 teams played weekly over a period of 18 weeks, being rained out only twice. After throwing all of these shoes, two teams remained tied after the final week - Harriet Denstedt's team & Sandy Moore's team! We decided that we would break the tie by having a one-game, 21 point pitch-off during the wind-up BBQ. The two teams designated their most hopeful two hurlers - Joan Beveridge and Dick Potvin for Harriet's team, with Ray Satchell and Archie Watt representing Sandy's team. After a tightly fought contest, the final score was 21/19 for Ray & Archie. Ray was also awarded the prize for the most ringers during the season, scoring 33 ringers. Members of the winning team were Ray, Archie, Robert Long and Sandy Moore. Regardless of the winner, it was an unusual season with the constant changing of teams and players; it was hard to know who was on which team. In the spirit of good sportsmanship, everyone took turns playing for teams in need. We presented Alberto Alves with a small gift to thank him for serving as a floater for the last half of the season. Having Alberto play on your team almost guaranteed a win!! (although Gary may not agree!)
Horseshoe night this year was improved with the addition of shuffleboard for the spouses of the horseshoe players. Janice Long organized the shufflers, set up their league and they were off! (Please see Janice's write-up on the Shuffleboard results). Now on Wednesday evening, we have double the fun.
At the combined 'Horse-shuffle' BBQ, Janice and Sandy awarded prizes and all participants took home a reminder of the fun we had during the year. We ended the night with a bonfire overlooking our lovely lake, until the rain finally convinced us it was time to "call it a night."

tfill.gif COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD

tfill.gif SHUFFLEBOARD
Janice Long
On May 28th a beautiful summer evening, the shuffleboard league was formed and participants began to play each Wednesday evening from 6:30 p.m. to approximately 8:00 p.m. in conjunction with the horseshoe teams. Players were: Sue Alves, Dave Beveridge, Maureen Etienne, Jean Goddard, Marilyn & Ken Hoffman, Janice Long, Bob Moore, Sharron Mitchell, Barbara Anne Muma, Judy Nussey, Diana-Lynn Paleczny, Jan Putnam, Judy Waldeck, and Lenore Watt.
September 24th was the wind-up BBQ and Awards night. It was a glorious evening with lots of good food, drinks, laughs and fun shared by all. Awards were presented for the two highest individual scores, Marilyn Hoffman (174) and Jan Putnam (173); highest score with a partner, Marilyn Hoffman & Judy Waldeck (297); Most Games Won, Lenore Watt (14) of 14. Congratulations to all.

The evening ended cozied around the bonfire. We even managed to sing a few songs before the rain began, nevertheless a great time was had by all.

Many thanks to everyone who contributed during the year to make these two combined events a great success!

See you next year!

tfill.gif REC CENTRE REPORT
Ron Donaldson
Recreation Centre Committee
All present members have agreed to continue on the Committee for another year. However, vacancies do occur. If anyone is interested in serving on the Recreation Centre Committee, please contact Ron Donaldson or Peter Soloman.

Volunteers at Work
For several years, George Jones has been on the Centre Emergency Contact List and on the Security System Call-out List, as well as being the coordinator for the pool testing schedule. George has asked to be relieved of his duties. Bob Good has volunteered for the Emergency and Security lists and Mary Wright has taken on the coordination of the pool testing. Many thanks to George for his many hours of valuable work at the Centre and thanks to Bob and Mary for offering to assume some of George's duties.
Another long-time volunteer giving up her job is Brenda Churton who, along with Rosemary Schaaf, has put in many long hours keeping our library organized in a very efficient manner. Many thanks to Brenda and to Rosemary. Flora Congdon has offered to assist Rosemary with her library duties. We are so very lucky to have the volunteers that we have.

Pool Lights
We have many lights in our pool area that make it look great, but they are not all needed for safety's sake and they are expensive to operate and replace. Please only use what you need, and please turn off all lights when you leave the pool.

Elevator Problems
Recently, a resident was stuck in our elevator for about 45 minutes and it was necessary to remove the door to get her out. This is the first time we have experienced this situation but it could happen again. If anyone is using the elevator, please make sure that someone knows that you are planning to use it. Our emergency contact people now know how to open the elevator doors in the event of a problem.

Recreation Centre Repairs
Approved in next year's budget are repairs to the billiard table, the spa and sauna timers and the ladies' dressing room. The ladies' dressing room repairs will consist of repairs to the two showers and the sink cabinet area and replacement of the carpeted area with non-slip tile and another drain. This should eliminate the problems with odour, mould and water pooling and it will make cleaning easier.

Recreation Centre Committee Meeting
The next meeting will be in Salon A on Tuesday, November 4th, at 9:30 a.m.

tfill.gif FLOWERS & SHRUBS
Sandy Moore
By the time you read this, the tidal wave petunias at the Erb's Road entrance will have been replaced by some lovely fall mums, which will help extend the colour at our front entrance. The balance of the annuals will be removed at the time of the spring cleanup. Also, there was a very good response to our request for peony helpers, and they should all be briefed by the time Fox Talk is in print, or shortly thereafter.
Unfortunately, JoAnne & Jim Brodie will no longer be unable to attend to the adopt-a-bed beside the lake, and as a result, we are looking for someone to replace them. This bed is beside the path on the Erb's Road side of the lake. It is currently planted with perennials, herbs and native plants. A few annuals are usually added in the spring to give a splash of colour, which looks lovely as you enter the subdivision. If you are interested in adopting this established bed, please call Ellen Bowring or Sandy Moore.

? We wish to extend a sincere thank you to Jim & JoAnne for the lovely job they have done on this bed. ?

During the coming month of October, our contractor hopes to complete the lower beds of the Waterfall project. This will involve placement of retaining stone, replanting of some of the area, some sod placement and a low maintenance ground cover.
We now go into the fall and winter planning mode. Our arborist will be around to take care of any fall pruning of our shrubbery and to plan for the spring pruning. The Committee will be busy planning for renovations and improvements for the coming year and taking care of the usual fall jobs.

tfill.gif zz

S & E COMMITTEE Bill Simpson POTABLE WATER SYSTEM
We are still awaiting approval from the Ministry on our application to reduce microbiological testing to bi-weekly. As soon as this is approved, we will receive new pricing from Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA), who perform our testing for their services. In the meantime, we continue to be billed at our original contract rate, notwithstanding that they are doing the new daily testing for chlorine residuals.

HOME IRRIGATION SYSTEM
We continue to have fewer breakages as compared to last year but again they continue to be of the more expensive variety, with three of the more recent cases involving the bringing in of new lines from the main. This is our policy when we have had previous breaks at the same homeowner site. Extensive work was required to straighten the main line in front of Dr. Szeps's property that had been causing breaks in the lines to two different homes. We have also installed a new valve in the main line in the same area that will allow us to isolate an area to make a repair rather than having to turn off the whole system.

REPAIR AND RECOATING OF LIGHT STANDARDS
Work has been completed with the repair of cracks in some of the light standards and with the application of new acrylic coating on all of the standards.

FENCE POST REPAIRS
One of our homeowners brought to our attention that the regular string cutting of the grass around the fence posts at the front of our property was causing a gouge to be dug around the post at ground level. If left, this would of course accelerate the rotting of the post. Mike Vadura undertook to install an aluminum collar around the posts (80 in all) that should solve the problem. Many thanks to Mike for another job well done. We will be looking to gear up a work party next year to repaint the fence. By next year, it will be four years since this was last done with a work party headed up by George Jones.

PATH WORK
Active Paving has completed work in laying a new surface of recycled asphalt on the path beside the golf course south from the entrance roadway to the top of the hill. With the rolling and sealing of the surface, we expect to be able to avoid the washouts, which occur after a heavy rain. While using hot asphalt would have been preferable, the cost would have been prohibitive, as the material would have to be wheel barrowed in and spread by hand. The area is too confined for the use of paving machinery. We are also preparing two new access paths at the south of the property near the sewage treatment plant. This will allow path walkers to avoid the woods during mosquito season and not have to walk across the tile field. Early in October, we will also be gearing up a work party to resurface the path around the lake with new stone dust. From the comments and suggestions of our volunteers who worked on the job that we did last June on the west side, we are arranging for Active Paving to provide us with a Skid-Steer and operator to transport material to the path. This will allow our volunteers to mainly concentrate on raking the material although we will still use the service vehicle and trailer to transport some material. We will be posting a work party notice in the centre within the next few days. Hopefully, those who worked tirelessly in cleaning the lake will have some energy left.

PARK BENCHES
Most of the park benches are now several years old and are in need of a refurbishing. They will be picked up for storage in the next month or so. Is there anyone in the community who would like to volunteer to do the job over the winter. Primarily it involves refinishing the wood portion. Please call me (634-9733) if you would like to undertake the task.

You may have noticed that 3 residents have been living at the rec center for the past few weeks. They have been working very hard in order to have the cookbook ready for the unveiling at the Friday night Happy Hour. There will be a limited number of books available for purchasing, but orders will be taken for a second printing. There are hundreds of great recipes, all submitted by our local residents and some very special photos of our community.
