Marg Macdonald
Keeping in Touch

Gwen & Wilson Abraham of 9 Spruce Grove and Betty & Ron Moody, 101 Golf Links were welcomed to Foxboro Green this month. We had several residents hospitalized during September. Linda Gardner received flowers and a card following her operation. Doris Bruder has received fruit and a card. Ruth Cooke and Henri Bertrand also received care packages following their recent hospital experiences.
A card was sent to Vic Cook on the death of his sister-in-law; to Al Cameron following the death of his brother; and to Catherine Stigter who lost her sister. Caroline Golbeck was given flowers and a card on the death of her father. In September's issue we reported, in error, that Bill Wills' mother passed away, when in fact, it was his brother. We do apologize.
Our profound sympathies go out to Mavis & David Crawford who have lost their daughter, Sandy and her husband Michael in an airplane accident. Their two grandsons were injured, one remains hospitalized in New Jersey. The extent of their loss is beyond comprehension. Sandy, a world-renowned orthopaedic surgeon and researcher, provided a great deal of support within the Crawford family and was a leader in Orthopaedics within the faculty of medicine at the University of Western Ontario. She will be sorely missed by family, friends, her patients and colleagues. Donations may be made to " Foundation Western" at the University in Sandy's memory. Donation cards are available on the shelf in the mail room.

Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Day

Mon. Oct. 21st Salons A&B 9a.m. to 5p.m. Cost $38.

This course is taught by a St. John Ambulance qualified instructor. It includes an educational book, as well as on-site teaching and practice. At the end of this day, you will have a certificate of competence in the administration of CPR. First aid equipment for home and car will be available for purchase.

A sign-up sheet will be posted in the mail room October 1st. At least eight persons must participate to bring in the instructor.

If you have any questions, please call Marg Macdonald, 634-5633.

The Care Committee gratefully acknowledges the recent donation from Foxboro Green Golf Committee. The funds are directed to the ongoing activities of the Care Committee, from which all residents of our community benefit.

Audrey Darbyshire.

Care Committee Fun-Filled Fund-Raiser Friday November 15th at 7 p.m., the Care Committee will be serving Decadent Desserts, followed by violinist extra ordinaire, Florence Hansen. Florence not only plays violin but many other instruments, some antique and some very "mod". She creates a variety of sounds and she sings! Those who have seen her know how good she is. Word has it she's sexy too, so guys don't miss this.

tfill.gif COMMUNITY PANCAKE BREAKFAST

Look for us again next May.Thanks again.

tfill.gif BINGO! BINGO! BINGO!

Twenty residents came out to enjoy an evening of luck at the September 14th Bingo. Shirley Thom and Al Olson shared the $50 Jackpot. Audrey Darbyshire and Bud Olsson were the last to cover all the numbers, so they shared a booby prize. Many thanks to Ron Bleier for his hours of calling the Bingo games.
Remember, the next Bingo night will be Friday October 11th at 7:30. Bring a friend and let's get out and have some fun. The more people, the bigger the prize money. Also, a friendly reminder exact change would be greatly appreciated when buying your bingo cards. Thank you.

tfill.gif 2002 CORN ROAST
Ruth Cooke Social Committee
The corn roast of 2002 proved to be a successful event in many ways: great entertainment, food, weather, camaraderie and financial gain. Thanks to Bob Leppington and Bob Price, $118.00 was raised by the horse races. This money has been allocated to purchase needed chairs and tables for outside use. Audrey Euler and Shirley Thom - great sales ladies that they are - added $78.00 to the social committee funds via the 50/50 draw.
Expecting to pay $150.00 or so for our entertainment, we collected accordingly. Thanks to David Crawford and his wonderful musician friends, we were delightfully entertained this year at no charge. A $50.00 donation was made to the Grand River Hospital Foundation, Cancer Centre as a token of our appreciation to the musicians. As well, the Erb Street M&M's, Murray's in New Hamburg and Herrle's all were generous with special pricing and discounts, hence monies of approximately $238.00 have been turned over to the treasury as well.
These extra monies are used to support the care committee, to purchase consumable items such as paper plates, to add to our inventory (e.g. coffee perks, Christmas decorations, knives) and to support events such as Christmas decorations up and down, where no monies are raised.
Thank you to members of our community for your support and contribution.

tfill.gif CRAFT & SAVOURIES SALE & VICTORIAN TEA
Elaine Simpson
Don't forget Sunday, October 20th is Foxboro's Craft & Savouries Sale with the addition of a Victorian Tearoom and a silent auction.
This year we have a great selection of crafts - hand painted items, stained glass, stuffed bears, wood working, knitting, pottery etc. This is your chance to do some early Christmas shopping or pick up a unique hostess gift. The Victorian Tearoom will be open from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. offering a selection of fancy sandwiches, dainties and beverages at a modest cost. What a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon visiting with friends, family and neighbours over tea. During the afternoon, you will have a chance to view the items offered in our silent auction and record your bids for that special "something".
Donations for our bake and savouries table - cookies, squares, jams, preserves, salsa, etc. may be dropped off at the Recreation Centre early Sunday morning. The price of admission will be non-perishable items or small cash donation for the Wilmot Food Bank. See you there!

tfill.gif MEN'S CLOSING GOLF TOURNAMENT

This year every team was able to complete the tournament. Many thanks to all who organized the "closing field day". I understand that they spent many hours being GOOD (on their knees, praying) so that the weather would cooperate. How good were they???? Very, very good! I hear that they will start working on the weather for next year's tourney sometime in March. THEY need all the help that they can get!!!!!

Seriously everything went well and everyone had an enjoyable day. I can only speak for the evening but both the company and the food were great.
Congratulations go to the following teams:

1st 7 under 2nd 6 under Chris Rice Eugene Leclair Vince Aquilina Don Becker Jack Brown Fred Stoett Jim Cooke Bob Good 3rd 2 under (won 2nd by retrogression) 4th 2 under (lost 3rd spot by retrogression) Ken Smith Jim Brodie George Usaty Barry Becken Vic Cook Peter Soloman Bill Waylett Bob Price Ken sends his thanks to all who gave him so much help, both in planning and running the tournament and to the ladies who decorated the tables. tfill.gif "HOLE IN ONE"

CONGRATULATIONS
"HOLE IN ONE"

Helen Fraser did it again, not one but two holes in one. Wednesday, May 8th and Wednesday, Sept 4th. Using a 7-wood on No. 8 White. Witnessed by Liane Trottier, Olga Teply and Marg Harris. Two out of the foursome witnessed both events. Don't know if it is lucky Wednesdays or your playing partners that bring you luck, or should we say the best in you. Way to go Helen!!!!
Not to be outdone, on Thursday, Sept.12th , Don Becker also had a Hole in One on No. 5 Blue using a 5-wood. The witnesses to this great accomplishment were Jim Brodie and Don Fraser.
Congratulations and welcome to the coveted "Hole in One Club".

tfill.gif COMPUTER CLUB
Ralph Adsetts
Tuesday night meetings continue with interesting subjects for beginners. On September 25th, we had Don Mosburger from DMS Computer Consulting as a guest speaker. He has given Foxboro Green residents special pricing for "in home" service calls. Call him for your needs.
Every Wednesday at 2 p.m. the WORD Workshop continues. There is no charge for this workshop other than the cost of copies. Everyone is welcome to come to learn about this powerful program. You do not need to be a member of the Computer Club.

tfill.gif SERVICE AND EQUIPMENT
Bill Simpson
It was approved at the August 29 board meeting that we would have pavement lines painted at the sides of Foxboro Drive from the gatehouse to the first intersection at Golf Links Drive. In addition, pavement markings at crosswalks and intersections will be renewed as these have worn. This work will be undertaken some time in October.
Our advice in last month's report turned out to be incorrect regarding the repaving of Erb Rd. next year and as is apparent, the job has already been undertaken. As this is being written, we are waiting for the job superintendent to advise us that we can dig out any area to widen our driveway turn-in radius, which they will then pave at no cost to us. We will have the edges of the expanded turning radii also painted and hopefully this will eliminate drivers (not all being residents) from shortcutting their turns and causing continual damage to the abutting grass area.
With the onset of the new fiscal year starting in October, we will have a new budget that will allow us to get to work on improving our path system. Already you may have seen a work party fixing an ongoing erosion problem on the section of path to the south of Maue Court. There are several other areas which have been identified as needing attention, and these will be worked on over the coming months by our committee or with the use of a contractor.
When the waterfall pump and motor was replaced during the summer, the new unit was too high to allow the existing cover to sit down on the concrete well. We have been unable to locate a satisfactory affordable replacement cover and we need to build a new one. We already have a design drawn but we could use some help from a couple of volunteers handy with saw and hammer to assist with its construction. If you can devote a few hours to the project, please call Stewart Bowring (634-8181) or Derek Tickner (634-5164).
The snow clearing contract for the next three years has been awarded to Active Paving and Landscaping from St. Clements on the basis of their lowest tender which was a substantial savings over our previous years' costs. They will do both the streets and the sidewalks etc. around the Recreation Centre which, previously was done by two contractors. We are satisfied that this company has the resources and experience to do the job satisfactorily.

tfill.gif GROUNDS REPORT
Cam Magnan
This will be short since our plans for next season were covered in detail in the Opinion Survey response distributed in the mailroom. The current changes you will see are
1 The dogwoods have been removed from the island and the beds sodded over. The dogwoods were in very poor condition. Their roots were constantly wet as they were on the shoreline.
2 Maue Court circle grass is in terrible shape. It is being top dressed and seeded this week. Woods Edge Court circle will be looked at next year.
As always, if you have any questions about the Grounds, please call me at 634-9850.

OOOP's We're Sorry Cam

Apology to Cam Magnan from the editorial staff.
In September issue Grounds Report - last paragraph which read "One resident went so far as to hassle the dog handler who was inappropriate and rude" this should have read "which was inappropriate and rude".

tfill.gif PROPERTY MANAGER REPORT
TheresaTewfik
Quotes are being gathered for snow clearing. Due to the size of the property, it is difficult to find contractors who are large enough and have the necessary equipment to take on the contract. I am pleased to report there has been an increase in the letters of concern that are addressed to me. These concerns are passed on to the Executive to be discussed at the next Board meeting. I then take instruction on how the concern should be dealt with. In some cases, the concern will come before the Board, as has happened in the past. On occasion, I have simply made a phone call and was able to solve the problem.
I have coordinated the repairs in the pool area and continue to assist Ron Donaldson as he directs. The Foxboro Centre sign will be taken down for repainting.
On behalf of the Community, I have written a letter of thanks to Bob Barnhart for the two pictures that are hanging in the Centre.
I am in my office at the Centre on Tuesday and Friday mornings and it would be my pleasure to be of service to you. If anyone has any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call.

tfill.gif RECREATION CENTRE REPORT
Ron Donaldson
Recreation Centre Garbage
Jim Campbell, who has been putting out the Centre's garbage for the past year, is giving up this task. Bruce Boucher has offered to take on this very essential job. If anyone is willing to assist him, there is a sign-up sheet in the mailroom. Recreation Centre Administration
Peter Soloman has agreed to become the Vice-Chair of the Recreation Centre Committee and to act as Convenor during Ron Donaldson's winter absence.
Volunteers are Wonderful!!
After a year of intermittent problems with the Centre's driveway post lights, the problem has been discovered and corrected by Derek Tickner. Derek put considerable time and effort into this task and in the process saved us several hundred dollars.
Considering the above three items, we are truly blessed in this community to have the volunteers, with their skills and knowledge, that we have.
Problems and Property Management
There are still a few people in our community who question the value of having a Property Manager. Let me tell you about Friday 20 September.
On this day Culliton Bros. were at the Recreation Centre to do their regular quarterly maintenanceSahara Pools were in to perform their weekly maintenance and to address a problem we had with foam building up in the spaJack Davies was in to do his regular cleaningthe Sharpe Co. were in to do the annual inspection check of our fire safety systemsand Bob Graham was in to repair the Reverse Osmosis system. Fortunately, Theresa Tewfik, our Property Manager was also onsite.
Shortly after Bob Graham left a water line in the RO system separated and Bob had to be called back in. The ruptured water line caused a short in the security system resulting in a fire alarm so the fire brigade arrived; the alarm couldn't be cancelled because Theresa's telephone wasn't working properly. Most of these problems were solved before the Men's Golf Tournament banquet that night and the baby shower on Sunday. Needless to say, Theresa didn't get much else done that day. While all of this was going on (Keystone Cops had nothing on us) your hard working Recreation Centre Convenor was where he should have been - playing golf. Thank goodness for our hard working Property Manager.
Recreation Centre Rental Policy
In response to the expressed opinions of the majority of our residents, the Board of Management at the 16 September meeting approved the following motion: That the Recreation Centre rentals be limited for use to internal community events and family related events sponsored by a resident, effective immediately.
The main concern has been residents renting the facilities for social events involving outside clubs or business groups. Recreation Centre Mailroom
A recent incident where someone bypassed the cord on the mailroom door while our mail person was sorting the mail, and also called her names, is unacceptable. May I remind you we are asked to give the mail person proper respect and to refrain from entering the mailroom until the mail sorting is completed.
Recreation Centre Committee Meeting
The next Recreation Centre Committee meeting will be on Tuesday, 5 November 2002 at 9:30 am.

tfill.gif FINALLY
Bob Price
Re: The Opinion Survey Response.
It took 7 years but we finally have someone that heads a committee that can give us all the details, facts and figures of their respective responsibilities. Thanks to Cam Magnan. (Mr. Wendland, Treasurer of Foxboro, is also an example.) In the past, the rumours in Foxboro have been unbelievable, too many to print here.
Hopefully, the Chairs of all of the committees in Foxboro will take Mr. Magnan's lead and tell us, or make us aware of what we should know. (No more rumours).

tfill.gif GARAGE SALE
Bob Price
There has been some interest in holding another "Garage Sale". We would be looking at Saturday, May 17th or 31st 2003. Fifty to sixty homes are needed to make this worthwhile and successful.
A sign-up sheet will be posted in the Mail Room for those who would be interested in participating.

tfill.gif COMMUNITY B.B.Q.
Bob & Bob
Thanks again for your support this past season, we have had a lot of fun and made some money in the process. Marg. & Jan. will be doing their thing with flowers etc. to beautify Foxboro Rec. Centre.

tfill.gif EUCHRE
Sandy Moore
On Tuesday, September 24th , we commenced our weekly euchre games with 8 tables playing. As we were one player short of 8 tables, we played 3 handed euchre at one table on a rotational basis. This method worked well and was enjoyed by all who played.
The first weekly winners were:
High Score: Jeanne Malich
Most Lone Hands: Al Olsson and Lil Good
Most Euchres: Ross Fairweather
Weekly surprise prize was awarded to Don Cowley.
See you next Tuesday. Don't forget to sign-up!

tfill.gif LAKE AND POND COMMITTEE REPORT
Marg Macdonald
We are very pleased with the support received from the community and the Board which has enabled us to contract for a Lake and Ponds Management Study. Limnoterra has been given the contract. Limnoterra has well qualified aquatic biologists on staff led by Dr. Jon Planck who has been working with wetlands for more than 25 years. This company is well known in the region for their wetland management expertise. They have dealt with problem ponds, have restored gravel pits and created wetland areas. They use a variety of techniques to create, improve or restore wetlands.

At Foxboro Green this fall, we expect them to perform the lake study and to begin the remediation of the Recreation Centre pond which will probably include cleaning out excess vegetation.

Again, as last month, looking for the positives we noted masses of gorgeous yellow flowers blossoming around the Sun Valley and Lakefield ponds. Our wild flower book tells us it is Burr Marigold. We can look forward to seeing it again next summer! Recently the asters (purple, violet and white daisy-like flowers) and goldenrod are in full bloom decorating the pond edges. Creating buffer areas around the lake & ponds not only slows the run-off of storm water entering the ponds but also allows native wild flowers to flourish. We can aide this process by planting wild flowers around the edges so that the edges instead of being "ragged" will have attractive flowering vegetation! Please remember that goldenrod does not cause allergic reactions. So often it grows in association with ragweed which does produce highly allergic responses that it receives the blame. Also, there are many types of goldenrod, at least 10 native in the Waterloo region. Have you looked closely to see the differences?

Water Lilies

Yet again we have received a donation of waterlilies from a friend of the community. Thank you Mary Boucher. Mary suggested to her friend Rowena Martin that we would gratefully accept a donation of lilies to the ponds of Foxboro Green when she was dividing her plants. Graham Macdonald (accompanied & directed in his activities by our donor Master Gardener, Rowena) took off shoes & socks and entered the water to help get the lilies out of the overstuffed pots sitting on the bottom of her lovely ornamental pond. Then at Foxboro he donned the communal hipwaders and ventured into water at depths of 3 feet to plant some 15 waterlilies. We were able to plant 6 in the lake, 4 in the waterfall and 5 in the Lakefield pond. We certainly hope that they grow as well as the ones planted this spring on that snowy day in May!

tfill.gif HORSESHOE BBQ
Alberto & Sandy
On Wednesday September 4th, the Horseshoe league finalized their 16 week season with a Barbeque and bonfire for 20 people. Our weekly contributions were used to provide sausage, hamburgers, salads, dessert, beer, wine, prizes and marshmallows for both the players and their spouses/guests.

Entertainment for the evening consisted of friendly games of horseshoes and everyone, including guests, took a turn at the 'shoe', uncovering some hidden talent for next year. In the final game of the night, the women players eliminated the men.
Yo Girls!!

Alberto Alves' team will be the first team to have their names inscribed on the Foxboro Horseshoe Plaque, purchased this year and on display in the library. Winning team members were Victor Cook, Denis Etienne, Janice Long, Linda Skelton and captain, Alberto. Each member also received a small commemorative trophy. Denis Etienne and Harriet Denstedt took top honours as the most improved players.

We closed the night with a sing along around the bonfire, roasting our marshmallows.

Note: During the year we found we were short of some equipment and wondered if anyone has a spare garden (not leaf) rake or a spare garden spade that they would wish to donate to the league. These tools are needed to help maintain the pits during play. If you wish to donate one of these tools, please call Alberto or Sandy.

Thursday morning Sept. 19, 6 quilters met at the Center to work on the quilt you have seen in the lobby. We enjoyed coffee and refreshments at the break. The quilter's continue to meet on Thursday mornings at 9 a.m. to help quilt the Hearts and Flowers Quilt that you have seen sitting in the corner at the Centre. This quilt will be raffled off when finished to help raise funds for the purchase of a musical instrument for the centre. We need more help from any quilters that have time on their hands. Even if you can't quilt, come on down and sit with us.
