Mail Room: If letters are incorrectly placed in your mailbox, please mark them Delivered to wrong mailbox, and return them to your mail box, (standing up on edge). Many letters are sitting on the bulletin board or shelf for an inordinate length of time.
The three parking spots directly in front of the Centre are to be used for fast and convenient mail pick-up. Please do not park there if you are going to be in the building for more than a few minutes.
Sound System: The new speakers are now in place in the Salons.
Building Concerns: On Wednesday, April 15, Bob Barnhart accompanied Eric Plevka, Doreen Greig and Russ Wilson on a walk through inspection of the building to see what problems should be attended to by Foxboro Green Inc. He was very helpful and receptive to our concerns. George Jones was a great help in the pool area.
When card tables are used by groups, please see that they are put away when you are finished.
In the very near future, the closing time for the Foxboro Centre will be extended until 1:00 a.m.
Pool Area: Groups wishing to book the pool for Community activities must do so through Marg Macdonald. It cannot be booked for private parties. At present, the policy is that the pool is not to be booked at all on the weekends.
Craft Room: Tables set up in the Craft Room are to be left there. Extra tables are kept in the Craft Room cupboard.

Computer Interest Group News Jean Malich
Snowbirds are returning and activity at the Centre is coming alive again in the computer room. The committee met in April for the purpose of planning the coming year's events.
Training sessions for Windows 95, Quicken, spreadsheets, and database are just a few that have been planned throughout the summer. We are hoping to have another show and tell night with members sharing stories on how they use their computers.
The spring business meeting will be held on May 19th, at 7:30 p.m. at the Community Centre. All members are encouraged to attend any meeting for a door fee of $2. or contacting one of the following Committee members:
Graham Macdonald - President 634-5633
Marg Macdonald - Membership/Treasurer 634-5633

From the Book Shelf
Have you been in the Library lately? Betty Spencer has done a super job of arranging the shelves and making it easier to look for the type of book you enjoy reading. With summer just around the corner, why not relax with some good reading.
I noticed the book, Final Diagnosis, by Arthur Hailey, in the pile of returns. I had just heard someone at Aqua Fit saying how much they enjoyed reading it, and it took me back to when I too had enjoyed it's intrigue. It came up during a discussion we were having regarding the Book Club that Jean Usaty is beginning, with participants reading, and then discussing the book they have read. A great idea Jean. Keep us informed.
Welcome back to our Snow Birds. Do you feel overwhelmed at all the faces and names that are unfamiliar to you? Just think how our newest residents feel, often not knowing anyone when they move here. As we grow larger, there is the danger of losing some of the intimacy and belonging that those of us who were among the early settlers experienced.
Dinner Club is one way to get to know a few folks at a time.
It works this way. Interested residents who sign up, would be placed into a group of 6 individuals, often 3 couples, but not necessarily. For ease of explanation, we will refer to them as couples. They would plan to meet together for dinner three times, usually over a 3 month period.
Couple # 1 hosts the dinner at their home, providing the main menu. Couple #2 brings a salad, and couple #3, the dessert.
The host couple also invite two other people, of their choice from the community, to join them. The next month, couple #2 is host, couple #3 provides the salad, and couple #1 the dessert. Always the host couple invites two more guests to join them. This rotates again for the 3rd month. By the time the three months are up, the original six people have gotten to know each other quite well, and become aquainted with six others beside. It is also a good opportunity for old timers to help new arrivals learn their way around.
Since the Snowbirds are gone all winter, they have the opportunity to join a Summer Dinner Club.. this would work well with BBQ's. For that matter, it does not have to be a dinner, it could be a brunch, held on your deck one of these lovely summer mornings, with the hostess supplying coffee and juice, and possibly one other item, while the other two couples bring muffins or fruit salad. It is up to your group to decide what you want to do. The important thing to remember, is that the emphasis is not to be on food, as much as getting to know one another.
If interested, please sign up in the mail room by June 1st. We will try to arrange, if possible, that couple # 1 will be someone who moved here the first year- couple #2 the 2nd year, and the third couple, within the last year. We will see how this plays out, and perhaps we will change the name frIf questions, call Bill Wills 634-9865

The birds are here; but where are the birdwatchers? Do we have anyone interested in organizing a Birding Society for the community?
Since moving here from Montreal last June, Margaret and I have been delighted by the number and variety of birds that we see within Foxboro Green and in the surrounding countryside. My most exciting sighting so far, was the three Glossy Ibis that stayed on the margins of our pond last Fall for over a week. These beautiful wading birds which are, I believe, rather uncommon visitors to these parts, were feasting on crayfish among the cattails and reeds. On another day, Marg and a friend were treated to the sight of three Great Blue Herons taking off and flying into the sunset through the willows on the west side of the pond. One heron seems to have taken up permanent residence, as we saw him (or her?) at the pond in December.
Signs of spring are abundant. Four male Common Mergansers, resplendent in breeding plumage of brilliant white, offsetting their greenish, almost black heads, were courting a lone female on the pond in the third week of March. One week earlier, I saw two other males drop in for a brief visit on a day when the ice partially melted. Today (2 April) a pair of Buffleheads and a pair of Scaup (both species of diving ducks) were busy feeding as I drove home past the pond in the grey dusk. Marg insisted that I drive back down the hill with her to show her too! The male Bufflehead is very smartly dressed in black and white with an unmistakeable white hairdo swept back on his head.
The return of the Red Winged Blackbird is noticeable from it's harsh conk-ca-reee call as it displays on swaying bare tree tops and bullrushes in the marshy areas. Robins add their melodious songs to the spring chorus. They are common now, but with so much woodland and other habitat being destroyed by human activity, we must cherish their every note and spring reappearance.
Red Tailed Hawks have been seen quite frequently thoughout the winter, either perched on tall trees or hydro towers, scanning for movement of mice, or soaring over the fields and woods. Snow Buntings scatter from the roadside as I drive by, leaving only the flash of black and white patterned wings as a clue to their identity. Horned Larks also favour road margins and I think I have seen a few recently. The Kildeer have returned to our grassy areas and pond edges and the air rings with their plaintive cries kill-deah which gives these plovers their name. Their camouflage is wonderful as they run in spurts across the ground looking for insects. Be watchful as you walk our grounds for fear of stepping on a nest, but you will have to be very observant to find one; they are so carefully concealed by the colouration of the eggs.
Our feeder has attracted goldfinches all winter, that is, after the bullying European House
Sparrows disappeared (why, I wonder). Mixed in with Goldfinches were House Finches, and an occasional Purple Finch, a couple of visits from Common Redpolls and a few Dark Eyed Juncos. Twice I have caught a brief glimpse of a White Breasted Nuthatch ,and next door the Downy Woodpecker has been busy on a suet bag in Gord Tayler's tree. Mourning Doves sneak quietly up to the base of the feeder to scavenge the fallen seeds; they too have amazing camouflage colouring and are very, very cautious in their approach. Perhaps they see the soaring Turkey Vulture overhead! These big birds, balancing on a vee of spread wings, can often be seen drifting over the forest and fields searching for carrion or a more moving morsel!
Yes, spring is here and even the snowbirds are drifting back to their summer at Foxboro Green. They have had their own sightings during the winter of birds that we only rarely see here, like my Glossy Ibises. Do we have any birders here?
The Total amound donated by Foxboro Residents to the Canadian Cancer Society was $1300.00. Thank you Foxboro Green for your support. Janet, May, Rosemary & Wendy

Timely Tip: from George Jones
I have found that when using the pool at night, the underwater light
is sufficient to light up the area. I believe that some people turn on all the lights simply because the switches are located next to one another. This use of about eighteen large lights seems, to me, to be a waste of energy and money. When using the pool at night, try the underwater lights only. I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Calling All Birdlovers
The Ruby Throated Hummingbird should have just arrived back in our area. These beautiful jewels are one of the easiest birds to attract to your feeder and their bravery makes them easy to watch up closely.
The ideal time to attract them to your hummingbird feeder is as soon as they arrive. Once they establish their nest, it is much more difficult.
To insure that they find your feeder, you can use a simple trick. Early
in May you should fill and hang your hummingbird feeder in a visible area near your window or lawn chair. Remember NOT to use red food colouring in your feeder as it can be harmful to the birds. Then put several bright red objects near your feeder. These might include red bows, red flower pots, etc. Anything red will attract hummingbirds and entice them to investigate. Once they have found your feeder, you can remove the red objects and put them away until next spring.
Hummingbirds like sugar water. There is no need to buy commercial hummingbird feed. A mixture of one part sugar to four parts water boiled for a few minutes and allowed to cool will keep them happy.
When they first arrive, and during September, you can adjust the ratio
to one part sugar and three parts water to give them a little extra energy for the long migration.
During very hot weather, clean and refill your feeder often to avoid bact-erial growth which can harm the birds. Remember not to remove your feeder until the last hummingbird has been gone for a few days in mid-September. Your birds will come to rely on your feeder so if you remove it too soon, they will be undernourished when they begin their migration. Keeping your feeder up until they go will increase their chances of migrating safely and won't affect their migrating at the right time. The temperature and the shortening days of autumn will tell them when to go.
If you manage to attract hummingbirds to your feeder, here is a fun trick to try. Wear something red and sit quietly nearby. If you have a red geranium in a pot, hold it on your lap. If you sit very still, the hummingbirds will often fly right up to you and hover to see what you are holding. It is quite possible that they will feed from the flower in your hand.
Good luck with your hummingbird feeder and have fun watching these beautiful little birds!

My Favourite Mother's Day Story
A little boy went into a lingerie store and shyly told the sales person that he wanted to buy a slip for his Mother for Mother's Day. He counted out his nickles, dimes and pennies, but, when the sales clerk asked him what size his Mom was, he was baffled. Finally, after some thought he said, My Mom is beautiful.. I'd say she's just about perfect! So the clerk wrapped up and sold him a size 34.
A few days later, Mom returned the gift to the store. The slip was just a little small. She needed a size 54, but her son saw her through different eyes. A tape measurement meant nothing to him. Through eyes of love, he saw her as perfect!
