ST. PATRICK'S CELEBRATION

Get out your Greens for Saturday March 20th, 7:30 p.m. when we gather at the recreation centre for Foxboro St. Patrick Eve: an evening of Irish food and song. Bring green beer (or green gingerale). We will serve you a corned beef sandwich on rye starting at 7:45 p.m. Following the sandwich Tom Nairn and a quartet from the Twin City Harmonizers will entertain with Irish tunes. We will be called upon to exercise our voices in some old familiar refrains! The evening will be capped by an enormous green Paddies' day cake followed by dancing for those who love to swing! All this at a cost of $5.00 which includes a donation to the charity that Tom's group support.

SIGN UP AND BE IRISH FOR THE NIGHT!

We will be looking for volunteers to help decorate, set tables, make sandwiches, and cut cake, so get your names on the volunteer list and pick the task of your choice.

Saint Patrick from the Internet

Saint Patrick was not actually Irish. Historical sources report that he was born around 373 A.D. in either Scotland (near the town of Dumbarton) or in Roman Britain (the Romans left Britain in 410 A.D.). His real name is believed to have been Maewyn Succat (he took on Patrick after he became a priest). He was kidnapped at the age of 16 by pirates and sold into slavery in Ireland. During his 6-year captivity (he worked as a shepherd), he began to have religious visions, and found strength in his faith. He finally escaped and went to France, where he became a priest (and later a bishop).

When he was about 60 years old, St. Patrick travelled to Ireland to spread the Christian word. It's said that Patrick had an unusually winning personality, and that, helped him to win converts. He used the shamrock, as a metaphor to explain the concept of the Trinity (Father, Son, Holy Spirit).

Glossary O' Terms

Erin go Braugh Ireland Forever

Leprechaun Irish fairy. Looks like a small, old man (about 2 feet tall), often dressed like a shoemaker, with a cocked hat and a leather apron. According to legend, leprechauns are aloof and unfriendly, live alone, and pass the time making shoes...they also possess a hidden pot of gold. Treasure hunters can often track down a leprechaun by the sound of his shoemaker's hammer. If caught, he can be forced (with the threat of bodily violence) to reveal the whereabouts of his treasure, but the captor must keep his eyes on him every second. If the captor's eyes leave the leprechaun (and he often tricks them into looking away), he vanishes and all hopes of finding the treasure are lost.

Blarney Stone The Blarney Stone is a stone set in the wall of the Blarney Castle tower (which was built in 1446) in the Irish village of Blarney. Kissing the stone is supposed to bring the kisser the gift of persuasive eloquence. The origins of the Blarney Stone's magical properties aren't clear, but one legend says that an old woman cast a spell on the stone, to reward a king who had saved her from drowning. Kissing the stone while under the spell gave the king the ability to speak sweetly and convincingly. It's tough to reach the stone-it's between the main castle wall and the parapet. Kissers have to lie on their backs and bend backward (and downward), holding iron bars for support. Can you imagine kissing something that has had people's lips all over it for 500 years?

The thirteenth Condo Corporation (WCC 289) was registered by Foxboro Green Inc. on December 31st. It includes 11 homes and we welcome our new residents as they take possession. This has brought the total registered homes to 150. A further Condo is expected to be registered in May and sales are reportedly going well. Construction of the third and final waste water treatment plant is well under way in the south west corner of the property. This plant will serve the homes on Woods Edge Court, Sun Valley Drive and Golf Links Drive below Maue Court, and its approval by the Township will release the remainder of the lots for construction.

With the project's end now in sight, Foxboro Green Inc. is less and less involved in the maintenance of the completed phases and the Foxboro Centre. The Homeowners Association, on behalf of the Condominiums, has taken over the responsibility for the operation and maintenance of all the Common Elements and Services, including the Foxboro Centre. Most contracts for services are now transferred to and are being managed by the Association's Executive and Sub-Committees.

When information is needed or problems are to be reported, residents are asked to contact one of the Executive Committee members (Names and phone numbers below). Bob Barnhart and his team remain very helpful and supportive at all times, but good management requires that first contact be made with the Executive who will coordinate necessary action. We do not have a full time property manager on site; this function is being handled on your behalf by a team of volunteer residents that needs your support and respect. As the scope of the management task becomes clearer the Executive is giving further consideration to the need for a professional manager.

We welcome Doug Wendland to the Executive as Treasurer of the Homeowners Association. He replaces Dick Dean who has handled both his own condo's finances and those of the Association since the first days of Foxboro Green. We wish to convey our sincere thanks to Dick for his contribution to our community. Doug has also been in the community since the start and knows the ropes well.

Condominium meetings are necessary during April and May, prior to the next Board of Management Meeting. There are some legal formalities to be approved relating to an Easement to allow all Condos to use all the roads in the community. Your Directors will also be seeking your input on a number of other issues. Your Condo Directors will be in touch with you to set up the meetings. We urge you to attend or to appoint a proxy.

An open letter to my neighbours from the Grounds Committee Chair.

Our Winter Wonderland is slowly fading (melting) away and in approximately two weeks Spring 1999 will officially arrive!

Most of the committee is still basking in the Florida sun but once we're back in late April, spring clean-up and planting activities will keep us busy. We'll need YOUR help, so please watch the bulletin board for notices.

A special thanks to our Wintertime volunteers, who kept the roads clear of snow, got the street lamps back on and in general did a fine job. Hats off to Fred, Al, Eric, Graham, Don and all of you who stayed home and looked after our community.

The spring and summer months are busy and challenging. We need help in many areas and hope to see more of our residents taking an interest in tending to the needs of Foxboro Green. We need volunteers to help with the following:

* path maintenance

* irrigation system, both homesite and common areas including The Rec. Centre

* plant-a-tree program

* roads and parking areas

* community buildings (pump house, gate house)

* fencing etc.

I hope you had a restful winter and you are ready and willing to help this summer. Looking forward to hearing from you. Bill

CONGRATULATIONS BRIAN

About two weeks ago Brian McKelvey had a perfect cribbage hand (three fives, jack of diamonds with the five of diamonds being cut). This is worth 29 points and only happens once in a "blue moon".

Speaking of "blue moons", one occurs during March, 1999.

Sorry Brian, I couldn't find a piece of clipart showing the perfect hand but at least it shows the jack of diamonds.

Let's Do Lunch, EH?

On Monday, Feb. 8th, twelve couples, all from Foxboro Green met and "did" lunch together at The University Park Golf Club in Sarasota, Florida. This was the second annual luncheon arranged by Al Smith and the turn out was 93% with Don & Marjorie Corker unable to join us because they were on a cruise that week.

Bill & Lucille Balcomb, Ethel & Allan Groves and Mary & Herb Penner drove up from Cape Coral and the North Ft. Myers area. Elsie & Bill Hall came down from Dunedin, Ellen & George Walker from Sun City, Jocelyn & Dave Kennedy with Fred & Irene Stoett from Ruskin, Art & Lorraine Spafford from Sand Key, Jeanne & Ed Malich from St. Petersburg, Ron & Wilma Wilkinson from Tierra Velde, Al & Blanche Smith and Brenda & Jim Churton from the host area of Sarasota.

A good time was had by all, especially when we passed around the pictures of our Foxboro Green community after the big snowfalls of early January.

Another "get together" is planned for March 25th at Fort Desoto Park, St. Petersburg. We hope to see Alice & Dick Demers and Marg & Cam Magnan from the Lakeland area, at this all-day picnic.

Everyone is welcome, so is you're anywhere near St. Petersburg on March 25th, - please join us.

Want more information? Contact Elsie & Bill Hall (727) 733-1042.

fill.gif VALENTINES PARTY

On Saturday morning of February 13th, cupids, hearts and red and white streamers were put up in the Centre in preparation for the St. Valentine party. Tables were set with red and white serviettes, and a goblet filled with jelly beans decorated each table centre.

Although many of our residents had left for sunnier climes, we had about fifteen couples who came to enjoy the music, dancing and conversation. We were delighted to see some of our newer residents and hope more will join us in future events.

Crackers, three kinds of cheese and baskets of various nibbles were handed out throughout the evening. A carrot cake from Teddy?s Bakery in Baden suitably decorated and including a birthday greeting for Jack Brown was served with coffee near the end of the evening.

A thanks to Pat Tibbles, Beryl Boughey and all the other helpful cupids.

A reminder to new residents that we have a very active swim program and we love to have new participants!

* Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 8:30 am we have mixed aquafit and at 10 am we have a ladies program (open to men but none have come!)

* Tuesday and Thursday at 9:00 am we have water aerobics. This, too, is lots of fun. We jump and run, swing and dance and when not puffing we're laughing!

* Monday, Wednesday at 11am and Tuesday, Thursday at 10am we have aquatone which is a special exercise program for people who have joint and back problems including those who have had surgery and wish to recuperate using exercise in the water. This, too is a very active group, enthusiastic and persistent.

All who participate in the swim programs are very happy with the results, increased strength and flexibility, increased energy and feeling of fitness. If you wish to come but would like someone to buddy with, to help you, phone Marg Macdonald at 634-5633. If you decide to "just show up" introduce yourself and we will make sure you have a buddy beside you.
