Garage Sale
Congratulations to all who participated in Foxboro Green's first Garage Sale. We had eighteen participating homes. Your involvement made this event an outstanding success. Now, if only the weatherman had been more co-operative!
The sale attracted many visitors from local areas including Mennonite visitors from as far away as Elmira.
Keep gathering together all those treasures you no longer want to keep and in another two or three years we will have a reason for a repeat. Thank you all.
Audrey Honeyborne & Bob Price,
Coordinators
P.S. Personal thanks are due to Bob Price whose expertise and effort contributed so much to the smooth-running and success of the event. Audrey H.
Editors' note: We all appreciate what both you and Bob did, Audrey. Thanks for your involvement as well.
Foxboro Bowling League
Our bowling banquet was held on May 21st at the Centre. Twenty-seven members attended. Dinner, catered by Kennedy's, was delicious and was followed by presentations to all members. A good time was had by all.
Sign-up sheets will be posted in the Mail Room in June for bowling in the fall.
Have a great summer.

Do you know who in 1923 was:
1. President of the largest steel company? (Contributor Unknown)
2. President of the largest gas company?
3. President of the New York Stock Exchange?
4. The greatest wheat speculator?
5. President of the Bank of International Settlement?
6. The Great Bear of Wall Street?
These men should be considered some of the world's most successful men, at least they found the secret of making money.
Now, more than 55 years later, do you know what became of these men?
1. The President of the largest steel company , Charles Schwab, died a pauper.
2. The President of the largest gas company, Howard Hotson, is insane.
3. The President of the New York Stock Exchange, Richard Whitney, was released from prison to die at home.
4. The greatest wheat speculator, Arthur Cooger, died abroad, insolvent.
5. The President of the Bank of International Settlement shot himself.
6) The Great Bear of Wall Street, Cosabee Rivermoten, died by suicide. The same year, 1923, the winner of the most important golf championship, the U.S. Open and PGA Tournaments, was Gene Sarazen.
Today he is still playing golf and is solvent.
Conclusion: Stop worrying about business and play golf!
Volume 3, Issue 6
Don and Rita were there at the time that Holland celebrated Queen Beatrix' birthday. Rita tells a lovely story of seeing the children, who upon catching sight of their Queen, showed their love and affection for her by running up and throwing their arms around her legs, hugging her.
Don's eye for beauty and interesting angles captured many of the floats in the Flowerparade in Rita's home town of Sassenheim. In his collection are many photos of children riding their bicycles along with the parade, and they too have their bikes and trikes decorated with flowers.
The pictures they returned with, showing Holland in all her glory, are worthy of a photo exhibit. Or, perhaps Don will one day put them on videotape and present us with a travelogue. I'd pay to see that, wouldn't you?

Don and Rita Hill of 137 Foxboro Dr. are a great couple most of us have gotten to know. Recently they returned from a trip to Holland, where Don, who is gifted in the use of cameras, was able to take advantage of the beauty with which they were surrounded.
Don took many pictures of windmills. At one, the miller, upon learning the Hills were from Canada, insisted on giving Don a tour around, eventually taking him right to the very top.
Below:
Probably Don's favourite subject to photograph, Rita (Staring) Hill, standing in front of her ancestral home, The Staring Castle known as 'DeWildeburg'. It remains in the family to this day.

G'day mates, (pronounced g'dy mytes)
It's good to be back up over once again. I guess that's the opposite of down under. The welcome back we've received from the community has left us gob-smacked. (In case you didn't know, 'gob' is another word for 'mouth', and often used , none too kindly, in shut yer gob. Of course you 'smack', or put your hand over your mouth when it drops open from amazement. Thus you are gob-smacked). It's wonderful to feel so at home in a community.
Sydney is very large, beautiful and clean. We had a few days to explore the heart of the city and it's picturesque waterfront. We then flew via Cairns, to Groote Eylandt in the Bay of Carpenteria off the north coast. This is where our daughter, Lori, and her family are situated. They live in a home on stilts, as are all the homes there. Visitors are told the reason for this is because the crocodiles can't climb stairs. The beaches are really beautiful, but unusable because of the crocodiles and jellyfish. Otherwise, it is just what you would expect of a tropical island.
Things in Australia are pretty expensive, so we didn't buy much, but we did bring back lots of pictures and wonderful memories. Most outstanding of these are:
...watching the dolphins cavort in the moonlight, and the flying fish, irridescent, skimming the water.
...eating crumpets and devonshire cream, with jam, coffee and fruit each morning, under the house (beside the cyclone cellar), surrounded by lush tropical beauty.
...watching our six year old grandson, Jordon, play rugby and then be presented the most valuable player award;
...four year old Danielle learning to ride her bike with assistance from her mother and Grandpa, (Bill) ... and celebrating Graham's 3rd birthday.
Oh, yes, and we had roasted Kangaroo while in Sydney..
And now, it's good to be home once more. We haven't heard too much yet about the Arbuckles' trip to Ireland, other than all the rain, but we do have some wonderful photos to share with you, that Don Hill took on their vacation in Holland. Thanks so much Don & Rita.
We hope all you fathers enjoyed a good Father's Day. Did you know that Father's Day is the biggest day for COLLECT CALLS?

Fitness Testing and Evaluation
Arrangements have been made with the Kinesiology Department at the University of Waterloo for personal fitness testing and evaluation. They are now geared up to commence this process. They will do the fitness test and evaluation for $75.00. This takes approximately 1 1/2 hours.
In addition, as a result of this evaluation and your personal wishes, they will develop a personal exercise program for you. The estimated cost is $15.00. Please contact Russ Wilson or Doug Wendland for the forms and instructions.
This department will also provide personal fitness training at a cost of $30.00 per hour. There has been some discussion regarding pooling our resources and sharing the cost and expertise of a personal trainer for short periods of time on an on-going basis to be determined. A notice will be posted soon in the exercise room and bulletin board in the Mail Room for those interested in signing up. If it is decided to share this trainer, agreement has been obtained that the exercise room would be closed to all but those sharing in this program during these time periods.

Grounds Committee Report:
It will be almost a year since our first plans began to evolve for a Grounds Committee. We first met formally in September and October 1996 with as many as sixteen residents, plus Bob Barnhart, Charles of Meadow Acres and the Hilton-Foster landscape architect. The latter group was involved in the over-all Foxboro layout and the club house landscaping plan.
At our first meeting it was unanimously decided to be a hands-on working group, and also be involved withplant selection and flower bed planning in future years. Related sub-committees, noted below, also evolved. The overview was to be involved with the Foxboro Community landscape planting and upkeep. In addition to the pleasures associated with gardening, there is the social interaction of residents and we could also save ourselves some money. The current cost of landscape work is $25.00 per man hour.
Sub Committees:
(a) Road and Snow Removal Committee:
Ross Fairweather, (Fair weather is what every grounds committee should have! Ed. note), Don Hill, John Inglis, Fred Rastel and Bob Barnhart formed this committee and were instrumental in selecting the Kleck Company for snow removal. It was the bidder, for cost as well as efficiency, and has a three year contract, that began last winter. If you have any concerns contact a committee member.
(b) Lawn and Path Maintenance Committee:
Jim Arbuckle, Hugh Bird and Bob Barnhart selected Greenway Lawn Care Company to maintain lawns and pathways. It had the lowest bid and would appear, so far, to be doing a good job. If there are any questions get in touch with Jim Arbuckle.
At this point, this committee also worked with Charles of Meadow Acres for the current years planting of common areas.
(c) Irrigation Committee:
Cam Magnan and Ed Malich have been instructed through Bob Barnhart to be knowledgeable about the irrigation system, critical in some areas. If you have questions in this area Cam and Ed are the two with whom to get in touch .
Conclusion:
A huge vote of thanks to those volunteers who worked up the flower beds and put in plants on the Gazebo island and Lakefield Court island areas. We will need help through the season to water, weed and fertilize, etc.
All residents are most welcome to join our group. We will have to decide how much planting we wish to do in the future and will meet, probably in the fall, to decide on plans for future years. Please call Hugh Bird if you wish to help, or join our group.

Here is an interesting sounding one. If you try it, let me know if you like it. It is recommended served with grilled salmon filets.

Picnic in the Park?
While we are in the beautiful City of Stratford, we have the option of having a picnic together beside the Avon River. If you would like to do that this month, instead of going to the restaurant, mark a P where you sign up for lunch. If this interests those going to CWC then we will discuss what to bring when we arrange rides. This option is open between now and September, so let me know your wishes. Maureen Wills
