A New Century

Whoa! A new century. It seems to us that we used to look at the year 2000 and figure that we would be doing pretty well to make it until then (there was doubt on occasion) but here we are all as spry as ever.

While most of the commentary these days centres on the Y2K possibilities, it has to be noted that we have experienced more change in our lifetime than our predecessors did over many generations. We are blessed to live in "exciting times" - but it sure is wearing trying to keep up. There have been fantastic changes far too numerous to even start to review and while our "today" world is vastly different to that at the start of the 1900's we haven't quite got to Buck Rogers stuff even though trips into space are becoming "ho hum".

Speaking of change, a recent article in the business section commented that typewriters and, believe it or not, carbon paper are still being manufactured. This surprises us to some degree as we know from our essentially adult students at Conestoga that few, if any, know what we had to do to obtain copies of documents before the "photocopier". Carbon paper they may know but the "Ditto" and "Gestetner" copying systems are completely unknown.

This brings up the subject of those things, products and services, which were so familiar to us, almost essential in fact, but which are now just memories. True, most have been improved upon or superceded, but in many cases we find it difficult to recall exactly " the way it was". An example of improvement is readily acknowledged with television. We all undoubtedly remember when every corner store was equipped with a device for checking vacuum tubes. Many a household's entertainment was put on hold while Dad headed off to the store to check each of the tubes from the set.

On the business front, time was you recognized an engineer, not by his/her iron ring but by the slide rule sticking out of the jacket pocket like a pennant. Come to think of it, most of them probably had to go back to school to qualify on calculators, probably a full semester course.

So far as communication is concerned, at the beginning of the nineteenth century distant communication was by mail or wire (using Morse code, whatever became of that?) and local communication again by mail or vocally. The greatest orators were, presumably those who could shout the loudest. What do we have at the dawn of the new century? We have "email", virtually instantaneous written communication, and we have the ubiquitous "cell phone" without which nobody should leave home, or so the Christmas commercials would have us believe.

With some of these things, and the many other relatively recent life and business style improvements in mind, does anyone want to make some projections about changes that may occur, not so much by the year 2100, but in the next ten years?

December 6th, 1999 Meeting Report
Keith Boughey

The final meeting of the board for the millennium was held before a packed house, with the overflow seated in the TV area, the minutes will provide more detailed information than this report.

For more information see the copy posted in the mail room, or you may consult your condo president..

The board received a report from Foxboro Green Inc. (FGI) that an addition has been made to eliminate the odour from the waste water treatment system, and that it appears to be effective. Residents are to continue to report odour's (see the form on the bulletin board).

Received a report regarding procedures for processing applications for alterations and or improvement projects for homes, homesites, or common areas. The report was returned to the committee to bring it into agreement with Condo Act 1998.

The board agreed to discuss at the next meeting, the process for a property manager to provide a wider range of services, rather than simply the Rec. Centre.

The committee investigating the Presentation Centre gave a report of the status to-date, and will continue the investigation with a complete report for the membership to consider before the end of May, 2000 target date.

The board appointed Ron Donaldson as convenor of the Rec. Committee to sit on the board and report for this committee.

A letter was read from the Waterloo Region Traffic Department regarding improvements to turning lanes at the main entrance. They requested follow-up data on the cost for FGHA to pave extensions to the road shoulders.

The nominating committee presented a report for the new executive and indicated that since candidates could not be found within the conditions imposed by By-Law #1, the board approved Peter Schmidt as Chair, Jim Allan as Vice Chair, and Keith Boughey as Secretary on an interim basis. They are to form an executive as non-voting members of the board, until such time that changes to By-Law #1 can be approved by the membership.

FGI advised that 22 homes are left to be sold, included are seven models currently under construction.

The Grounds Committee reported on the snowplowing contract for the coming season, as well as street lighting and the pond aerator. It is hoped that the aerator will resolve the algae problem of the last couple of years. The board referred the draft policy regarding repairs to the irrigation system, back to the committee for further study and revisions.

The board approved the Rec. Committee's request for changes in pool maintenance at an additional cost of $1578.00 per year, also approved were repairs to air conditioners, pipe insulation, and the maintenance inspection of the security system.

A committee was established to prepare for changes in insurance requirements for all condos under the new act. The committee will report by June, 2000.

It was decided at this time to defer seeking legal assistance on amalgamating the condos until the government publishes regulations governing the act.

The meeting adjourned at 11:55 p.m. and the hall emptied in record time. It seems that several coaches were about to be turned into pumpkins, although no glass slipper was to be found. It was noted however, that one spouse had telephoned to find out if his partner would be coming home for breakfast.

The next meeting of the board will be Monday January 24th 2000, providing all members are Y2K compliant.

Hopefully 1999 has passed into the history books without major incident.

Minor problems are still being experienced at The Centre. The overhead pool lights have been malfunctioning. Twice during the holidays, the patio doors at poolside were left ajar; this can result in a serious problem.

Please monitor your guests closely. The emergency equipment at poolside is just that - EMERGENCY equipment. It is NOT to be used for pool activities

My thanks to the pool testing crew - you have been doing a great job!

Have a very Healthy and Happy New Year.

tfill.gif Undelivered Mail?

Have you used the Outgoing Mail Box down at the Centre and discovered that your missive has not reached its destination?

The above has occurred a few times.

Let Bob Price know if you have experienced mail not being received. Bob has kindly offered to "follow this up". Feel free to contact him at 634-5243.

tfill.gif We Might Lose Our Outgoing Mail Box

Someone is using this box to get rid of their junk mail, rather than taking the junk mail home to dispose of it in their own garbage.

A sign has been posted under the slot specifying that this is for outgoing mail only. Unfortunately this inconsiderate person has ignored the sign and still deposits their junk into the box.

Our mailperson says that if this continues, the mailbox will be sealed and then all of us will suffer. We will have to go into town to mail our letters.

tfill.gif The Special Events Committee
Marg Macdonald

It is time that the members of this committee receive our thanks for the work they have done for us over the past several years.

The senior members of the committee Beryl Boughey, Blanche Douey, Pat Tibbles, Barb Lashbrook and Marg Macdonald have been active since 1997. In 1998 this team was joined by two new and enthusiastic recruits Helga Stamm and Ada Jenkinson and in 1999 Audrey Euler, Corrie Fournier and Marilew West volunteered to join the gang. This committee has members from every corner of the community and as the community grows so it, the committee, has grown.

Each special event takes a great deal of planning. Members attend two hour planning meetings at least once a month. In December two to three meetings are required. The Christmas dinners took hours and hours of committee members' time even though there was no food preparation, service or cleaning of dishes. Committee members co-ordinate the shopping for decorations, food (e.g.. for decorations up and down), search for particular talents in the community to help with particular activities, for example special entertainment. Some committee members have accepted responsibility for special duties. Marilew shops for all our Happy Hour goodies. Ada has looked after updating and organizing name tags for the last year, now Audrey is helping with this. Every detail for every event has to be planned including promotion, setting up, decorating etc., etc.!!

As their fearless leader I would like to thank each member of the committee with particular thanks to Beryl Boughey who keeps me calm by kicking me out when I get flappy, to Blanche Douey who when given a job takes off and runs, e.g. Oktoberfest and New Years, to Pat Tibbles who never says no and listens with great sympathy (and patience) to all reactions to our events, and to Helga Stamm who has generated many creative ideas and has made them happen! As for Barb Lashbrook - what can I say. Often away, especially out fishing all summer on Georgian Bay, she manages to fill essential roles on the committee. She's in charge of apple cider, centre pieces, donations and anything else we'd like. Her local knowledge and contacts have enriched the efforts of the committee. On behalf of the community, I thank each member of the committee for their individual work as well as their effective hard work as a group. Well done.

Christmas Decorations

Such pouring rain on our decoration day! In spite of the rain the Recreation Centre turned from quiet elegance into a centre of sparkle, glowing with green, red and gold. The tree raised by Fred Lashbrook and cohorts was covered with decorations. Helen Lumby lead songsters in boisterous caroling. Hot cider, cheeses, sausages and really big rich cookies rewarded all the worker bees. So we managed to beat the weather. Tuesday, a brisk and beautiful sunny day, provided optimum conditions for the exterior decorating, from the Reception Centre to the trees around the Recreation Centre. It has been so pretty coming home at night to our community with every street gleaming, reindeers, wreaths and pretty pine trees all aglow. How lucky we are!

Christmas Dinners

A total of 170 residents attended our three Christmas Dinners held December 9, 10 and 11.

Angies again catered the dinners. The new menu of turkey and dressing along with the roast beef proved to be a hit. Service was efficient and the dishes evaporated at the end. What a treat!

The highlight of the dinners proved to be the music of our minstrel Peter Shaw, who not only entertained us with carols but threw in some Irish and Australian tunes. He pulled us into the music, everyone sang.

As a special treat in this millennium year, Helga Stamm and an enthusiastic group of crafters produced specially decorated Xmas cones. Each diner received a cone to take home to hang on their Christmas tree. Special thanks go to Marjory Clark (who was the highest producer) and to Caroline Golbeck (who had never done such an activity before). Thanks to everyone who participated! Again this year the centrepieces on the table were stunningly beautiful. Barb Lashbrook and San Olsson spent many hours creating, painting, spraying and gluing.

The tables sparkled. The diners all in splendid best dress showed that we of Foxboro can celebrate in style and proved what fun it is to be together. We will do so again at New Years, at Valentines and at our great Paddies Day Party. Can hardly wait!!!

Decorations Down Bash!

Yes we make a party of this too!

Mark your calendar. It's Sunday January 9 at 2 p.m.

Christmas Decorations will come down in another celebration. Come and help! We'll provide goodies. It's always such fun to work together. Our Christmas decorating activities offer a golden opportunity to meet more distant neighbours. Dick and Doreen Dean, Rita and Don Hill will again be our inspiring leaders. We hope that Dick will have a little more mobility on this day although he was a very effective Captain in December while trapped in his chair!

tfill.gif Gifts to the Wilmot Community!

We thank everyone who donated gifts to the Wilmot Family Resource Centre and to Barb Lashbrook who determined the community need and co-ordinated this effort on our behalf.
