Items of Note: ( for New Residents and Old)
From time to time we will need to repeat certain things in order to apprise new residents of various aspects of life at Foxboro Green.
(It doesn't hurt the rest of us to have our memories jogged a bit either.) If you hear of questions being asked by newcomers, don't hesitate to let your Fox Talk editors know -others may also be wondering.
Mailing Letters: The post office advises us to stand any outgoing mail on its edge. This distinguishes it from mail not yet picked up.
Zehrs Tapes: An envelope to collect these is in the mail room. When there is a significant amount totalled, they are turned in and Zehrs sends a cheque to our Social Committee for comunity projects.
Neighbourhood Watch: To be on the list to receive information updates, new residents should register their name and pertinent information with Bob Price at 534-5243
Fox Talk: Our aim is to have these out no later that the 15th of each month. There is one newsletter per household. The present method of placing the new issues in the mail room, in two files A to L and M to Z worked well at first. However, with growth, we now have several duplicate names, such as Dean, Smith and Wilkinson. There are two Gardners and soon we will have three Hills. Then there are names sounding the same, but spelled differently, such as Lootens and Luton. Jones and Jonas are very similar. Last month many folks contacted us to say there was no newsletter with their name on it. In almost every case there were these name similarities, and someone had taken the wrong name. Therefore, we would ask you to be extra careful when looking for the Fox Talk with your name on it. Make sure it is spelled correctly, and that the initials are yours.
If you discover you have taken someone else's in error, please advise Bill or Maureen Wills (on the answering machine, if we're away), then return it to the mail room, or the person it belongs to. This month we were called on several times to print extra copies, only to have some of these turn up again in the mail room. This is both time consuming and costly. So we appreciate your help in this matter.
Next month we will try a different method. In a small standing file, there will be 5 file folders, each labelled for a street in Foxboro Green. Each copy of Fox Talk will have a house number on it. So, look in the file bearing your street name, then look for your house number. That will be your copy.

What do you think of when you think of February?
Hearts and flowers is what most of us would probably answer on a quiz.. Oh yes, and February is also heart month, when donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Fund. (Marg Wendland and Rosanna Olsson will be collecting at Foxboro Green.)
On further reflection we might remember Wiarton Willie and all his furry little cousins that like to predict on February 2nd, how much longer we can expect our winter to be. In fact, Canadians are hoping soon to turn this into a winter holiday to help beat the bleak winter blahs. Did you happen to catch the rerun of Kids Say the Darndest Things last week when Art Linkletter asked a cute little black boy what he knew about Easter? The little boy, looking about 5 years old, answered with all the authority of a southern preacher. In great detail he told how Christ was born, died on the cross, and was buried in the tomb. On the third day He came out of the tomb, looked around, and when He didn't see His shadow, went back in the tomb again. I'm sure the Almighty Himself got a chuckle out of that one.
Hopefully, another symbol will come to your mind. Since 1947 the first week of February has been designated White Cane Week. People who are blind have used a cane as a tool for travel for centuries, but it was not until 1921 that the white cane became the symbol of blindness. An English photographer who had lost his sight decided to use a white cane to let the people in his community know he was blind.
In North America, the introduction of the white cane is attributed to Lions Clubs International. In 1930, a Lions Club member watched a blind man attempting to cross the street. His black cane was barely visible to motorists against the dark pavement. The Lions decided to paint the cane white to make it more visible. In 1931 the Lions Club International adopted the promotion of white canes for people who are blind as a national program.
Kate Harvey is the Co-ordinator of Client Services for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind in Waterloo/ Wellington. She is a Mobility Specialist who teaches people who are visually impaired, to travel safely and independently. Please do not be offended, she explains, if your help is refused by a person who is visually impaired. It is possible they are on a mobility lesson, or prefer to handle the situation independently. However, situations do occur when people who are blind need the assistance of a sighted person, so I hope you will continue to offer your help.
The white cane: a symbol of blindness, courage and independent spirit.
Timely Tips: Put some table salt instead of expensive weed killer on dandelions that grow wild in your garden or in cracks in the pavement.

One minute away lies the sleepy little town of Philipsburg. Or perhaps it only appears to be sleeping. Perhaps we just have not paused there long enough to discover the energy behind the town. Named after it's founder, Philip Lienhardt, an early settler from Bucholz, Germany, the town was first known by that name in 1851.
At the crossroads stands The Philipsburg General Store. Built in 1828, it was originally an old hotel- with the entrance at the corner. To the far right as you faced the entrance, was a livery stable. From the existing structure one is led to believe that the main floor was divided by a hall, the larger portion a beverage room for men and the smaller for ladies. Dances were held upstairs. It was the heart of the community.
Over the years it has been a lunch bar, a barber shop, as well as grocery stores under various owners. Recently sold again, it now is under the management of Linda and Ron Bran- der. Linda is a 35 year resident of Philipsburg. Ron works at Home Hardware in Wellesley.
When you pop into the store for the first time since it changed owners, you will immediately note many carefully thought out changes. Ron reconstructed the store with several
well placed counters. New paint and paper gives it a bright, cheery look, highlighting the craftsmanship of a bygone era. It is very pleasing to the eye, clean and uncluttered.
The upstairs is due for renovation, but it is not yet known just what it will become. With nine bedrooms, and the Stratford Festival so close, bed and breakfast would be a natural.
Besides being a convenience store, travellers can stop for a coffee and muffin, or bowl of soup. The kid in all of us will beat a path to their door for an ice cream cone, pop or chocolate bar. Or, it may not be sweets that draw you, but the convenience of the store as a depot for New Hamburg Cleaners. Articles for cleaning are picked up every Tuesday and Thursday. The store is open Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. - 8 p.m. and Sunday, 12 noon - 8 p.m. Hours are subject to change depending on business, so you may want to phone ahead if you are concerned. To inquire concerning a specific item phone 634-5236.
Neo Citron, mouse traps and fuses, magazines, stamps and Videos are all available, even the 18.9 L jugs of Spring Water. A Bulletin Board holds notices of sale items and events.
Don't miss the beautiful crafts. Besides wooden crafts by Ron, another Philipsburg resident, Claire LeMay, also has crafts on consignment. She does stained glass work, wooden crafts, and paints- T-shirts, and scenes on old metal objects such as saws.
Linda, whom you are most apt to meet in the daily running of the store, says they are open to expand their inventory with new items, as there is a demand. Why not drop in and meet Linda, and see what they have to offer. You'll enjoy her cheery manner and understand why, once again, The Philipsburg General Store is the Heart of the Community.

Recreation Committee Report - January 1998
Library
Many thanks to Betty Spencer for taking over the responsibility for organizing our library. There will be a basket for incoming books. Please do not shelve your books -Betty will do it.
Mail Room Bulletin Board
Our new system is working with a minimum of problems. Please sign and date your notices. If the board becomes full, the oldest notice will be taken down. Doreen Greig will take down any notices which do not conform to the required 8 1/2 x 5 size, other than notices approved by her, e.g. minutes of meetings.
Air and Pool Temperature
There have been numerous complaints about the water temperature in the pool and the air temperature in the building. These complaints range from too hot to too cold. In the pool the best temperature for the most efficient use of the chemicals is 81 to 82 degrees. This is the temperature that we have established. The most comfortable tempertature for the fitness room would be 65 degrees. However, this is too cold for the rest of the building so we have established 69 (20C) as the best compromise for people using the change rooms. We know that this is not perfect for everyone but compromises have to be made.
Change Rooms
Concerns have been expressed about items left in change room lockers for a period of time. These lockers are provided for the use of people changing in these rooms. In this regard it has been pointed out that clothing is being left in the cubicles or on the benches while people swim or use the fitness room. Please co-operate and store your clothes in the lockers provided when you leave the room and carry your equipment to and from the Centre.
Billiards Room
Some time in December someone broke the green shade on the pool table light. Accidents will happen, but we would appreciate people telling us when these things happen. Bob Price has managed to temporarily repair the shade. A replacement would cost $80.00. There have also been reports of children under the age of sixteen using the pool room without supervision by a resident. This is not acceptable. If any adult guests are using the pool table, unaccompanied by a resident, they are required to leave ten minutes after being requested to do so by a resident waiting for the table.
Sound System
As to numerous comments on the poor quality of the sound for dances, a meeting is being arranged to try to remedy the problem.
Building Concerns
Our system of having the building cleaned every Friday seems to be working very well. Some concern has been expressed about the change rooms. Please do not wear street shoes on the tiled areas -they are easily marked when they are wet. When hair dryers are used please check to ensure that loose hair is not left about the room. A little effort by all of us will ensure that we do not have to go to the expense of paying extra cleaning fees. If you have suggestions or ideas regarding the Recreation Centre, please check the list of people who are responsible for the area of concern to see who should be informed. This is posted on the bulletin board.
