February Snows

This is the month that everyone looks to the Groundhog to tell them if we will have another six weeks of winter or not I've never taken too much stock in that little creature. It never fails that we still get 6 more weeks of winter whether we see his shadow or not. It also has never failed to snow on my birthday every year for the past oops! Almost gave my age away. I guess that's why I love Florida so much. It does not snow there, - at least not yet. By this time of the year everyone is sick and tired of winter and looking for all kinds of excuses to get away. This is the month that I sit with my seed catalogues and dream about the day when the seedlings will spout and warm days will soon be here to enjoy. Time has a way of passing much too fast these days, so sit back and relax..spring is just around the corner.

Marg Macdonald
Our sympathy was given to Joan Roberts after the death of her brother in Wales.
Doris Bruder continues to await a second hip replacement in the hospital.
Our box of chocolates, funny card and numerous visitors have spurred Bob Piccinin to a rapid recovery.
Norma Murray received community best wishes and flowers following her surgery.
We are all so sorry to hear of Herb Stamm's accident in the Dominican Republic. He is now in intensive care in London. We hope and pray for him, and are anxious to hear some good news.

Emergency Care
The Social and Care Committees are arranging for breathing masks to be placed in the Recreation Centre in case of an emergency where artificial respiration is required. One mask will be placed above the water fountain downstairs, the other inside the vestibule of the Recreation Centre near the door-open pad. They will be clearly labelled. There will be instructions in the container holding the masks as to their use. The masks are for emergency use only. The upstairs mask is in the entrance so that should the emergency be out of doors the door code will not have to be used to access the mask - if inside, the door can be pushed open to reach the mask.
Thank you Peter Soloman & Marg Macdonald for donating the masks.

tfill.gif Swimming Pool & Hot Tub
George Jones
Residents sometimes mention to me that the pools "seem cold". The swimming pool is maintained at 84 degrees. The water in the hot tub is usually at 103 degrees, which is about the upper limit that was recommended.
For those residents who have wondered about the pools: the swimming pool has a capacity of 30,000 U.S. gallons. The hot tub a capacity of 6,000 U.S. gallons.
I would ask that residents not use any soaps or "bubble bath" in the hot tub. It takes several days to filter out and, in the interim, residents have to sit in "soapy, bubbly water" when using the hot tub.
Considering the cost of hydro, would residents who use the pool at night please think about how much light you really need. Many residents find that the underwater pool light is sufficient. If you feel that you require more lighting, consider using only (l) set of overhead lights as opposed to both. To go into the pool area at night and turn on all three light switches simply because they are there, might be a bit wasteful.

tfill.gif Emergency Number
Barbara Anderson

In rural areas, each driveway outside city limits has been numbered. These numbers are called "Emergency Response" driveway numbers. The green sign at the entrance way to Foxboro is numbered 2975.
In the event of an emergency, always include the driveway number 2975 when giving information to the person answering the telephone. The OPP told me it was an "ABSOLUTE NECESSITY" to speed up the response process, and it takes all the guess work out of where Foxboro is.

When someone calls 911 and gives their address, a map comes up on the 911 computer screen, but it is limited. When you give the driveway number it shows them exactly where you live.
It speeds up the process and they are dispatched to the correct location. (An ambulance could be summoned from anywhere). Since our address is Baden, they could be dispatched to the original town of Baden first and therefore they would be delayed.
Please write the driveway number 2975 beside the emergency number or near your phone. We do not always remember information like that when we are faced with an emergency, involving the police, ambulance or fire brigade.
Hopefully this helps in some small way.

With a lightness of heart and lots of fun and co-operation, neighbours and friends welcomed in the New Year at our Recreation Centre. Colourful balloons, streamers and candles created a festive atmosphere. We enjoyed a wide variety of 50's to 90's music for dancing, as well as a scrumptious potluck buffet feast. It was an enjoyable evening with spot dances, lively conversation and a dash or two of libation.
Many thanks to everyone who contributed food, music and their enthusiastic participation. The party was a huge success! Thanks to the conveners who were Charlotte Burnstine, Jean Goddard and Carol McKelvey.

The M.B.G. have completed their commitment to the Community, (from money made from the BBQ and Horse Races). We made flower boxes and had Jenkins arrange flowers in them. They are on top of the Sauna. We hope to have enough money left over to purchase picnic tables for the back lawn.

Garage & Lawn Sale Update

Dick Dean and Peter Soloman have agreed to assist me this year, along with several other volunteers. The date is Saturday, May 31, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The cost will be $5.00 per driveway. Any money left over (after expenses) will be given to the Care Committee. A sign up sheet will be in the mailroom April 15. ARE YOU READY ???????

tfill.gif Accidental Breakage
Bob Price

If you accidentally break something or find something broken at the Rec.Centre (or anywhere else for that matter), report it right away so the item can be repaired or replaced by someone who knows what they are doing. Over the holiday season, one of the shades over the pool table was broken, (this was the third one) and improperly repaired. Resident Mike Doyle and some friends were playing pool when the shade came off the light and shattered. Thankfull, no one was cut and the tablecloth was not damaged. Thanks Mike for cleaning up the mess and reporting the problem. The shade has been replaced with a plastic one.

The computer club meetings were briefly interrupted over Christmas but are now in full operation with meetings on Tuesday as usual and classes Wednesdays from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. for those wishing to learn more about WORD. Ron, Arnold and George are taking turns to present us with topics of interest, e.g. putting pictures onto the hard drive, adding pictures and background scenes on all our e-mail letters, internet news sources, etc.. Thank you gentlemen. The construction of the cabinet is still underway at Baden, but only one man is working on it. It is not a group project. The base of the cabinet is almost finished and is being stained. We have a perfect match with the existing stereo cabinet in the TV room.

The waterfall pump has been re-instated and tested. It is shut down for the winter months.
Cracks in the light standards are showing up and B. Barnhart will be contacted to find out who the supply contractor is. A drain has been placed by Klecks Contracting in the following areas:
Adjacent to the Will's property and behind the Reidlinger property. Restitution to the properties will be completed this spring.
A request was made to the Regional Hydro to install a light at the entry to Foxboro. A letter of reply from J.F. Henner, Director of Transportation and Environ-mental Services of the Regional Municipality of Waterloo rejected our request claiming it as a very low priority. We can however, do it ourselves at our cost.
Most of the path work has been completed and drains have been installed to prevent further erosion.

WSCC Treasurer's Report

Your response to our request for January condo fee cheques was speedy and highly appreciated.

As everyone is aware, the common fee assessment for each unit was agreed and discussed with all owners under our former association structure. There was some confusion for January as this was our first month for the monthly fees to be collected by one corporation rather than through nineteen separate groups.

Most residents have provided post-dated cheques for each month up to and including September 1st, which covers this fiscal year. This is ideal from an administrative viewpoint.

It appears a few owners would rather not provide so many cheques. To make sure that there is no further confusion, we should note that our By-Law, Section IX, stipulates that each owner is responsible for making sure that the fee for each month is paid by the first of that month. If this is your preference, it will be your responsibility to make sure your cheque is delivered to the treasurer or to the condo office by the first of the month.

Effective March 1, 2003, Ruth Cooke will be retiring as Chairperson of the Special Events Committee, but will remain as Treasurer. The new executive consists of:

Co-Chair: Elaine Simpson & Sandy Moore
Secretary: Janice Long
Treasurer: Ruth Cooke

We wish to take this opportunity to thank Ruth for the tremendous effort she has put into the various events over the years. She will take a well-deserved rest and you will note that it takes 2 of us to replace her. All the best to Ruth and Jim in their newfound freedom.

The Chairing of this committee has always been a huge undertaking and the committee members have had many discussions on how best to manage so many varied events. The consensus was that an individual member of the Committee, or of the Community, would convene each separate event with the assistance of Special Events.
The convener would be responsible for assembling a work-group and providing guidance for the event from beginning to end. With this in mind, a 'Tentative Schedule of Events' giving the dates of events and the convener's names, has been prepared for 2003, and will be posted in the mailroom shortly. Some events have yet to have a convener named, but should be complete by the end of March. To assist the conveners, or anyone else, an Instruction Manual is being prepared and will be available in the library (hopefully by the end of March). A copy of the index will be posted in the mailroom, along with the list of events.
We would also like to hear from the community regarding ideas for existing and new events. Please take time to complete the attached questionnaire and return it to one of the two Special Events slots, beside the photocopier. These 2 slots will be the permanent home for Special Events material, so any time you wish to leave us information, please use the slots. If you prefer, your comments and suggestions can be e-mailed to me at [email protected].

Thanks for taking the time to give us some feedback. We are always glad to hear new ideas!

This is the time of the year when a warm bowl of soup really goes down well. This bean soup recipe uses both the turkey broth we have in the freezer and left over ham bone.

Add pepper to taste

Place beans in pot and soak overnight. Drain beans and return to pot. Add broth, ham bone and seasoning, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 2 hours. Remove ham bone and bay leaf.

1 can whole tomatoes with juice
1 tbsp. olive oil
2 chopped medium onions
` 3 large chopped carrots
3 chopped celery sticks

Saut onions, carrots and celery in oil. Add onion mixture and tomatoes with juice to broth. Simmer for 1 more hour. Remove ham from bone, cut into chunks and return to soup. Taste for seasoning.
