'Tis the Season To Be Jolly

It almost seems like yesterday, when we were getting everything ready for planting. Now the days speed by so quickly, and we're so short on daylight hours, that everything we want to do during the day, seems to get pushed from one day to the next. Lucky you, if you're one of the ones who is so organized that you have your Christmas shopping done, and have the presents all wrapped. Not all of us have achieved your success.

However, all is not lost! One of the best things about living in Foxboro is getting to know our neighbours, and in the process, finding laughter, friendships and good times. Amid all this frivolity, we are sometimes so caught up in the whirwind of activity, that we occasionally lose sight of those who are less fortunate, or who, for one reason or another, no longer view the upcoming holiday as one to celebrate.

Amid the hustle and bustle, as we ready ourselves for visits to and from family and friends, please remember those who are having a difficult time, and offer your help in whatever way you can.

The past two months have certainly provided us with some very distinct weather patterns. First we had snow for Thanksgiving, and then in November, we had wonderful balmy days that were great for golf, yard work, and the occasional wax job on our cars. The presence of snow, however, has let us know that winter really is just around the corner.

For those of us who are still here, we have our Foxboro Christmas Dinner to look forward to, as well as gatherings with friends and family. We're just hoping that we don't have to give the snowblowers too much of a workout in the coming months.

For those of you who have already left for warmer climes, we hope you are enjoying yourselves, and trust that you'll think of us as you hoist your glasses to toast the season.

Wherever we may be, we know that all of us will feel a special connection to Foxboro Green, and that as the cold winds blow, we will soon be together again, enjoying each others' company.

PICK an ANGEL from the ANGEL TREE

Make a local child or two happy with a gift for the Wilmot Family Resource Centre's Christmas Baskets. In the mailroom you will again find angels with gift suggestions. Gifts are to be left unwrapped so that the volunteers can select appropriately for the family. Please place your gifts in the Christmas box under the Christmas tree. Your generosity is appreciated!

tfill.gif NEW YEARS EVE 2001

Every year we have a wonderful, spontaneous New Year's Eve gathering. Last year everyone brought food, music played, folks danced and had a great time. Are you interested?

We are looking for residents to organize the night for this year. Please sign-up on the volunteer request sheet in the Recreation Centre.

tfill.gif VALENTINE'S LUNCHEON

In the Year 2002, we plan on having a Valentine's Luncheon at Marian's Country Cupboard.

Plans are well underway for March 17th, St Patrick's Day. We'll have a new caterer, so look for more news on that later.

tfill.gif PAST EVENTS

Art, Craft and Hobby Show and Sale
Charlotte Burnstine

"Amazing!" "Inspiring!" "I had no idea how many of my neighbours are so talented!" "I'm very impressed and pleased to live in a community with so many talented people."

On a lovely autumn afternoon, 34 participants hosted over 200 guests at the Recreation Centre. Almost every inch of the main floor was attractively set up to display a wide variety of articles so caringly and creatively produce for display and sale.
This was the first time that many of the contributors had displayed their work in public and it took a great deal of courage to do so. Perhaps it will stimulate others to try their hands and express their own creativity next year.

Here are some numbers that emerged from this extraordinary event, which far exceeded our most optimistic expectations.

INTAKE
Sweet & Savoury Table (approx. 80 contributors) $350.00
Raffle Tickets & Table Rentals $225.00
Cash Contributions for the Food Bank $100.00
Food Collected at the Door for the Food Bank 131 1b

DOOR PRIZE WINNERS
Floral Centrepiece Carol Cameron
Assorted Gourmet Coffees Madeline Wallace
Key Rack Dale Bleier
Pasta & Spice Rack Harriet Denstedt
Christmas Lantern Cole Spear
(The Hoffman's Grandson.)

To all those who contributed so generously of their time, their talent, and their resources, WE THANK YOU ONE AND ALL! Thank you also for such enthusiastic community support.

October 20, 2002, has been booked for next year's show. Winter is a wonderful time to snuggle in, get creative and prepare for the fun next fall. See you then.

tfill.gif Pub Night
Ralph Adsetts
Friday, November 23rd marked the first Pub Night in Foxboro Green. Ken Smith played the piano for three hours without a break. Where did he get the stamina? Over seventy people crammed the two salons and spilled over into the hall. Board games, dancing and singing kept everyone enjoying the evening, but it was not until later that a crowd gathered around Ken and sang their hearts out. They had a ball!

This is the first of several planned Pub Nights. For our second event, Russ Wilson has volunteered to lead a group singing the songs of the war years, but I think that he also has some other ideas taking shape in his head. Watch the notice board in January and find out what they are. Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped with tables and chairs.

tfill.gif BOWLING CLUB
Joan Beveridge
The Foxboro Green Bowling Club winds up its fall season on Dec. 10th. On Dec. 3rd we'll have our "just for fun" with pizza and Christmas "cheer". The new season will start the first Monday in January with a less structured format. New members are welcome with a maximum of 36 persons.

tfill.gif "THE EYES ARE ONE YOU" CONTEST

We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the fact there was only one eye, due to last minute problems. We were able to notify everyone through a sign that was posted above the entry box.

The one eye was found by our winner, Sandra Nairn, who will receive a free haircut from Alberto Alves. For those of you who never did find the eye, it was on page 2, One of a Kind paragraph, line 8, after the word "countryside".

tfill.gif November Food Drive

A letter was received from the Wilmot Family Resources Centre, thanking the community for our generosity. A total of 436lbs of food were collected between October 2nd and November 4th, and donated along with $100 from the Art, Craft and Hobby Show and Sale.

Fundraiser for the Care Committee Nov. 18th

Thank you Isobel Smith, Marilyn Hoffman, Liba Vadura, Elsie Hall and Sandra Doyle for sponsoring and working so hard to make this a success. Grace McAninch and Harriet Denstedt were there to sell used books on behalf of the community. Pampered Chef and Avon donated the door prizes which were won by Maureen Wills and Barbara Anne Muma.

Kathy Steffler, representing Avon, and Sue MacLeod, Elsie and Bill Hall's daughter, representing Partylites, donated gift baskets which were raffled off, raising $80.00. Harriet Denstedt was the winner of the Avon Basket and Helen Fraser won the Partylites basket.

It takes the cooperation of many people to organize an event like this. Our thanks go to all the volunteers who helped to make this event the success it was. Over $300 was raised, and the real winners are those who benefit from the cards, gifts and good wishes extended by the Care Committee.

The Care Committee offers greetings, recognition and support to residents who have been ill, had surgery or suffered a loss. We thank the Social Committee for their 100% support, and the residents for helping out through your attendance at our functions.

tfill.gif Care Committee Report:

As reported in November, Eileen Fairweather has resigned as Care Co-ordinator for Care Committee #2, however she will continue to help out, especially with Dennis & Eileen Wilkinson for whom she has cared over these years. She will continue to be eyes and ears so that we are aware when help is needed. Thank you Eileen.

Also Marg Wendland continues on with Care Committee #1 until Barb & Harold Koerber have their health concerns straightened out. They have had to wait for medical care, so it has been a very difficult time and our hearts are with them both.

tfill.gif Lake & Ponds Committee

On Monday November 11th at 9:30 a.m., Sean Geddes of the Grand River Conservation Authority gave us a presentation on Basic Pond Ecology. His presentation was very informative and helped us to learn more about managing our ponds. Again he emphasized the importance of having a buffer zone around the ponds to filter the run-off before it enters the water. He also described the benefits of using aerating devices to increase oxygenation of the water, especially in our small, still ponds. He had several suggestions as to resources we could use to get help with water testing and management.

Thank you to the Members of the Lake and Pond Committee who have spent countless hours learning about the subject, walking around with contractors, and then preparing plans and budgets so that we can improve our water management. We also appreciate the support of all residents in this endeavour.

tfill.gif Services and Equipment
Ron Bleier
Residents returning after sunset will have noticed that the lights are once again shining on the front gates. Our thanks to FGI and the intrepid electrician.

The benches around the lake have been brought in. Over the winter, they will be refurbished in preparation for a grand reappearance in the spring. Until then, walkers can take a rest by leaning on the bridge railing at the head of the lake.

During the past winter, some residents expressed concern about the speed with which the snow plow moved along our streets. Please keep in mind that snow weighs a considerable amount and if the plow loses momentum, especially around corners, there is a chance it will get stuck.. Momentum also helps to throw the snow back from the roadway, avoiding a steep build-up of snow walls along our streets, as that would make walking difficult, and backing out of a driveway dangerous.

tfill.gif RECREATION CENTRE REPORT
Ron Donaldson
Garbage Collection

Jim Campbell is looking after putting out the Centre's garbage on Thursday mornings. In order to make his job easier, your assistance is being requested. All garbage, including full blue boxes, should be placed in the garbage enclosure. It will be appreciated if, once the garbage has been picked up, anyone able to do so would return the empty containers to the garbage enclosure so that they are not blown onto the road.

Pool Rules

The pool rules have been set by the Recreation Centre Committee, approved by the Foxboro community, and most people abide by them. Recently the rule restricting infants of diaper age from using the pool has generated some discussion. Residents are reminded that diapers can create a health hazard and are not allowed in the pool. E-coli bacteria, as demonstrated by the Walkerton disaster, is very dangerous. While normally our chlorination system can handle any usual problems, our pool is not constantly monitored. If an infant was to have an accident in our pool, resulting in an e-coli bloom, the pool would have to be drained and disinfected, a process that is not only expensive but would also require the closing of the pool for several days. Please honour our rules.

Winter Operations at the Recreation Centre

Ron Donaldson will be away from mid-December to mid-April. During his absence, any problems should be directed to Theresa Tewfik, our Property Manager. In addition to Theresa, three volunteers have agreed to handle any emergencies that may occur at the Centre.

The emergency contacts include:

George Jones 634-9839
Tom West 634-5000
Russ Wilson 634-9823

The willingness of these volunteers to fill in is greatly appreciated.

On the second and fourth Thursday of every month, join us to find out more about this ancient, yet very modern game. December dates: 13th and 27th.

tfill.gif Computer Club:

The members of the Foxboro Green Computer Club are extremely thankful for the generous donation made by the Special Events Committee towards their continued production of Fox Talk.

Thank you also to the mystery benefactor who donated Bingo winnings to the club. Every bit helps (that's a computer joke).

tfill.gif KEEPING IN TOUCH

Our sympathy goes to Kathy Steffler and Marilew West who both lost their father. Donations will be given to the St. Mary's Hospital Foundation and the Canadian Shrine Hospital for Children.

Dick Potvin received a basket of fruit after his surgery in October. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Flowers were given to Doreen Dean during her treatment, and we continue to wish her well.

We welcome Gerry and Shirley Thom to Foxboro Green.

tfill.gif Harvey Riedlinger

OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHY

We are sad to announce the passing of Harvey Riedlinger on Friday, November 9th, 2001. Harvey and Betty were married in 1952. They were blessed with two daughters and a son. Harvey was also the proud grandfather of four grandsons.

Until his retirement, Harvey was the President of Ornamental Mouldings of Waterloo and their operation in the U.S.A.

Despite his serious illness, in these past years with us at Foxboro, Harvey strived to participate as fully as possible. He always displayed good humour and a wonderful wit. He was an inspiration to all of us who had the privilege of knowing him.

Our hearts go out to Betty and her family.

A donation in Harvey's name was sent to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

tfill.gif Pam Linneman

Remembering Pam When we lose close friends, it is that time when we realize how short life is. Pam Linneman passed away on Nov. 9th, after battling cancer for two long years. She will be remembered as a dedicated volunteer for the past 4 years as treasurer of Condo 250.

After the passing of her husband Franz, Pam started volunteering her time at Big Sisters in Kitchener. She found this very rewarding, and a help in getting her through some of her hardest days ahead. Right up to the end, Pam never stopped hoping that she would beat her illness.

Pam, we will all miss you.

In memory of Pam, a donation was given to the Hospice of Waterloo Region.

tfill.gif MERRY CHRISTMAS
Hanne Pedersen
Have a good time, but remember...... when the lights are out, the tinsel is gone, and you need to dispose of your Christmas tree, you are asked to take it to the recycling depot in St, Agatha, behind Angie's Restaurant. Used Christmas trees will not be collected by our regular pick-up crew.

AND FINALLY...

The editors of Fox Talk would like to apologize to some of our residents who may have received a copy with lopsided print or borders. We are continuing to have problems with the printer, and hope to soon have things resolved.
