RUMINATING

A recent newspaper article described our little village as "a retirement community" so, as we thought we were perhaps living here under false pretences, we decided to retire. Not that we were exactly working our fingers to the bone. In fact many thought we had been retired for years.

Anyway, being retired means that one has to find some recreational activity to occupy oneself. Nothing too strenuous you appreciate, after all retirement means taking it easy. Gardening comes to mind, unfortunately, we are somewhat horticulturally challenged, although we can handle turning on the sprinklers, after making sure that it is really our day to do so.

Browsing through some of our back issues we came across the "No Fault Rules of Golf" and decided that they did make sense so we would give golf another chance bearing in mind the following "Laws of Golf". Author unknown but not believed to be from Scotland.

1. No matter how bad your last shot was, the worst is still to come. This law does not expire on the 18th hole as it has a supernatural tendency to extend over the course of a tournament, a summer, even a lifetime.
2. Your best round of golf will be followed almost immediately by your worst round ever. The probability of the latter increases arithmetically with the number of people you tell about the former.
3. Brand new golf balls are water magnetic. The more expensive the ball, the stronger the magnetic attraction. It is also a given that if a ball has water or Out of Bounds tendencies all balls from the same "sleeve" will have the same characteristics.
4. Every par-three hole has an automatic desire to humiliate golfers. The shorter the hole, the stronger the desire.
5. The higher a golfers handicap, the more qualified he deems himself to be an instructor.
6. Topping a 3 iron is the most painful torture known to man.
7. Golf carts always run out of juice at the farthest point from the clubhouse. In the same vein, the rain will start when your group is at the farthest point from shelter.
8. No matter what causes a muffed tee shot, a golfer's playing partners must incant "You looked up" or risk the end of the universe.
9. A severe slice is a thing of awesome power and beauty and may be admired. On the other hand, a severe shank must be completely ignored by all players.
10. A golfer hitting into your group will always be bigger than anyone in your group. Likewise, a group you accidentally hit into will consist of a football player, a professional wrestler, a convicted murderer and a Revenue Canada official or some similar combination.

Well, I'm off to the walking trail behind Golf Links Dr. to find a ball and to get started.

Thank you Mary Ann Martin for all the hard work that you and Charlotte Burnstine put into renewing the artificial floral arrangements in the Centre. They look lovely and are really appreciated by the rest of us.

Community BBQ -Happy Hour 2
Bob Price
On July 13th approximately ninety people enjoyed the BBQ and Happy Hour 2. The new horse-race game went over so well that we are going to do it again.

Editors' Note:
To the "Two Bobs" - We were there and it was great. We managed to win a little too. Many thanks for the terrific job that both you and your wives are doing.

Canada Day 2001
Marg Macdonald
What a marvelous day we had!! The weather was superb, much better than July 1st!
The sports events were well attended and run by the organizers with great efficiency. Many people won prizes! We discovered many highly skilled new residents who beat the field in horseshoes, shuffleboard and golf. Well done!
We had so many volunteers helping out that it is impossible to thank everyone individually but thank you all!! Special mention goes to Beryl Boughey who shopped for decorations, made decorations, hung decorations, organized and supervised the kitchen, danced for us and was down the next day cleaning up! No wonder she took off to England. She needed a break!
Wally Morrison got all the game organizers on track. Bob Price not only organized games but again served as our Master of Ceremonies. What can we say about Lil Goode and her dancers. Terrific, they were!! Thank you all.
Last but not least our fearless leader Ruth Cooke kept us all motivated and in line. Can hardly wait for next year!

tfill.gif SECOND NOTICE

Fox Talk is "up for grabs" We were rather disappointed with the lack of response to our request for a new editor(s) for the newsletter.

Remember that you can publish with many different kinds of software. Maureen and Bill Wills used Microsoft Publisher and I have used both Word 97 and Word 2000. I am sure that there are many more desktop publishing programs available.

As I mentioned at the beginning - this is the second notice. Perhaps you have been away and missed the first one.

Our last Fox Talk will be the October issue which will be the end of a three year tenure for us.

Gail Hovey or Ruth Dean

tfill.gif Community Care Concepts
Marg Macdonald
At the July meeting of the Care Committees' Coordinators we welcomed two guests. They spoke to us about a volunteer organization whose mandate is to provide services to Seniors and Disabled Adults of the Townships of Wilmot, Wellington and Woolwich. Veronica MacDonald (executive director) and Cy Ridout (a volunteer), spoke about the services they provide - assisted transportation (supplementary to the disabled bus service), homemaking services, friendly visiting, inside and outside maintenance, meals-on-wheels and a senior day program.

They came to Foxboro not only to inform us about their services but to ask for volunteers from this community for their assisted transportation service. They have an urgent need for volunteers to drive seniors to appointments and activities. They are able to provide 32 cents a kilometre to the drivers. Volunteer drivers can volunteer as much or as little as they wish. Drivers may also specify the areas in the countryside in which they are comfortable driving. For example, as many of us are not familiar with the region we might not be able to drive someone from here to Heidelberg. These stipulations will be taken into account. Even if only able to volunteer once a month that's OK. Drivers are notified 48 hours in advance whenever possible.

Drivers are provided with a letter which they take to their insurer. The insurer is obliged by Ontario law to extend coverage if an accident should occur while the volunteer is providing service.

The Community Care Concept visitors were very interested in our Care Committee Service in Foxboro. We may be able to work collaboratively. Many volunteer services are provided to people without the government knowing and therefore those planning services do not fully know true community needs. Community Care Concepts reports all their activities to the government. They get some support from the Long Term Care Department but much of their financing comes from community fund raising and the charges to their clients who can contribute.

This would be an excellent way for some in Foxboro to contribute to the larger community. Please call me, Marg Macdonald if you are interested.

It is the by-product of brand new shingles and therefore is no more toxic than the shingles on your roof.

Acoustics - Salon A & B
The acoustic problems in Salons A and B have been discussed with a sound engineer - the main problem is the low ceiling. The cost to install engineered acoustic tiling ranges from $10,000 to $50,000 with no guarantee that the acoustics will be improved for all the many different uses of the rooms. The Recreation Centre Committee has decided to take no further action on this matter.

Ductwork in the Centre
The ventilation ducts in the Centre are filthy and create a possible health hazard. Quotes have been obtained to clean all ductwork and a recommendation will be made to the Executive and the Board in August to proceed with this cleaning .

Ladies' Dressing Room Carpet
A decision has been made not to replace the carpet with tile, at this time. Instead, the carpet will be cleaned, including steam cleaning and fungicide treatment, more frequently.

Pool Testing
George Jones has had almost forty volunteers sign up to test our pool chemical levels six times a week. Our thanks go out to George and his team of volunteers.

Volunteers are reminded to call the next person on the list to remind that person that they are scheduled next to do testing.

Testers, please note: - chlorine readings in the lap pool as low as 1.5 to 2.0 and in the spa of 3 plus are quite acceptable.

Pool Pumps and Dryatron
Many people have asked why an automatic reset cannot be installed to start up the pool pumps after a power failure; we lose the Dryatron when the pumps are off. The pumps have magnetic switches to cut out the pumps if there is any power interruption. This is a safety feature to ensure no one gets electrocuted in the pools. Also, it guards against the possibility of the pump motors burning out in the event of a voltage drop. Neither of the above scenarios is desirable!

We will continue to manually restart the pumps and the Dryatron. The pumps are alarmed and monitored.

Recreation Centre Committee Meeting
The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 4th at 9:30 a.m. in Salon A.

tfill.gif G.M.O. Report
Bill Hall
Recently, the G.M.O. engaged the services of a tree expert arborist, Bruce Javitz of Arborland Forestry Consultants, and received a report as to the condition of our trees throughout the community of Foxboro Green. As a result of his report, in August the G.M.O. will be carrying out the following tree maintenance program. Dead limbs and dead trees will be removed. Certain trees in crowded conditions along the golf course fence will be removed to allow other healthy trees more room to grow. Small poplar trees and root shoots along the south golf course fence line will be removed. Several trees have Dutch Elm Disease and will be removed. Others that are not Elm Disease infected will be treated with an injected substance that hopefully will save the tree from getting Dutch Elm Disease.

Trees are vital for the health of the ECO System and ultimately our health - yours and mine. More trees must be planted in Foxboro Green, and as the pond sites and the entrance site as well as other sites already being considered for redevelopment are given the "go ahead" we will have the opportunity to add more trees.

This Fall the G.M.O. will be purchasing the planting trees in several common ground locations. Any residents who are planning to plant trees and have ARC's approval may want to consider adding on to the G.M.O. purchase. The more trees we order, the better negotiating position we have. If interested, contact our Property Manager, Theresa.

Some time after Labour Day the G.M.O., under Chuck Fox's leadership, will be having a work project to remove the wires and stakes from all trees on common ground that no longer need to be supported (planted for more than two years). If you have trees that are now mature enough not to need support and want the support stakes removed contact our Property Manager, Theresa, and we will add you to our list.

Currently our tree program is being managed by Cam Magnan and Dick Demers. Good Job - Well Done. Thanks!

Keeping In Touch
In July we welcomed to our community Janice and Robert Long (48 Sun Valley Dr.), Joanne and Frank Kalcsa (29 Sun Valley Dr.), Carmen and Wayne Martin (7 Sun Valley Dr.), Lorraine and Henri Bertrand (3 Sun Valley Dr.), Doris Rettinger (Marilyn Hoffman's mother at 5 Lakefield Crt.) and Barb and Dar Anderson (144 Foxboro Dr.).

We have supported John Stevens post surgery with a basket of fruit and as we can see as he walks the community he's doing very well!

Get well cards were sent to Bill McLuhan, Marilew West and Harvey Riedlinger. Don't forget that if you are having surgery and you need equipment for the post surgical period, phone Marg Macdonald. Vic and Joan Cook have a wheelchair which they have offered if anyone should need it for a short period.

Please remember to hand in your care committee volunteer sheets to your Care Committee Coordinator or to Marg Macdonald. Even if you are unable to volunteer at this time we like you to return them with a note to that effect.

A last reminder about the placement of emergency information on the door of your refrigerator. Marg M. has notified the Emergency Medical Services of the Region of Waterloo and if necessary they will look for that information when called to the community.
