Chapter 20

Ted set Brian down in the front seat, leaning the seat back for him.  Then he got in and backed out of the drive.  Lyn was sitting in the backseat, leaning forward and gently stroking Brian's cheek to comfort him.  Ted picked up his cell phone and called the hospital, telling them to get a room ready and clear the emergency waiting room until they had gotten in and out of sight.  Brian was still trembling so Ted turned the heat on in the car for him.  Brian looked over, "Thanks."  Ted smiled at him as they continued down the road.

Lyn leaned forward a bit more, looking at Brian, "We'll be there soon."  Brian smiled at her and reached up, taking her hand in his, "I know.  P-p-please don't be s-cared."  Lyn felt the tears stinging her eyes.  Even now Brian was still trying to comfort her.  Brian reached up with a trembling hand and brushed the tear from her cheek, "Don't c-cry.  I'll b-be OK."  Lyn smiled, nodding her head.  He had to be the strongest bravest person she'd ever met.  If she were in the same situation, she'd be freaking out by now wondering what in the world was wrong with her.  But not Brian, he just lay there, calm as he could be.  Trusting that he would be fine.

Ted pulled up to the door of the emergency room and threw the car in park, getting out.  Lyn jumped out of the back seat and opened Brian's door.  Ted reached in and let the seat back up slowly.  Brian groaned as the movement sent him into another wave of dizziness.  Ted scooped him up and headed into the building with Lyn on his heels.  He spotted a nurse standing next to the desk, "Mary, which room?"  "Two," she answered, following him into the room.  Ted lay Brian down on the bed, "I want him on monitors now," he instructed.  A couple nurses began to strip Brian of his shoes and the afghan that was still wrapped around him.  They started to cut Brian's shirt off when he grabbed the scissors, "Don't cut i-i-it."  The nurse looked at him perplexed as Brian tried to pull the shirt over his head.  Lyn walked up and helped him get it off, "It's his favorite shirt," she explained.  The nurse smiled, helping Lyn get the hospital gown on him.  They left him in his sweat pants and socks, bringing in a couple more blankets to put on him.
Brian watched as one nurse hooked him up to a heart monitor.  As soon as she had, he saw the blimps go across the screen and knew there were to many.  Another nurse was taking his blood presser, and still another was putting in an IV.  He marveled at how everyone knew their job and went to it.  Brian looked up at the ceiling, all the movement in the room was making him dizzy.  Lyn looked down at him, "You OK?"  He smiled at her, "Yeah, just dizzy."  "Are you still cold?" she asked.  "Not as bad," he said.  Ted walked over, "Brian, we are gonna start you on some of the tests tonight."  "OK," Brian said, closing his eyes.  "Brian," Lyn said, cupping his cheek.  Brian opened his eyes and looked at her, "I'm OK.  I'm just tired."  Ted put his hand on Lyn's shoulder, "It's OK, he can sleep through the tests if he wants."  Brian smiled, "Yippee."  Lyn and Ted both laughed at him.  "Go ahead and go to sleep, we'll take you down for the tests in a little while," Ted said.  Brian nodded, closing his eyes.

Lyn and Ted watched as he drifted to sleep.  Ted motioned a nurse over, "Pam, call Dr. Skinner and tell him we are already here and starting the tests.  If I'm not getting any sleep tonight, then neither is he."  Pam laughed, "I think I'll let you tell him that last part," she said, leaving the room.  Ted chuckled, as he looked over seeing Lyn still standing next to Brian.  She was holding his hand as he slept, brushing a tear away every so often.  Ted walked up to her and put his hands on her shoulders, "Honey, we will find out what this is."  Lyn nodded, "I know, but when you do are you gonna be able to fix it?"  Ted sighed, "That I don't know yet."  She looked up at him, "Why do I feel like this is Nick all over again?"  "Aww honey, don't think that," he said, bending down and hugging her.  "I mean is it me?  Or do I always fall for the guy who is sick?" she asked.  They both laughed at her comment.  "It's you honey," Ted said, trying to lighten the mood.  Lyn smiled, "I knew it."

A couple of orderlies came into the room to take Brian for his tests.  Lyn looked at Ted, "Can I come?"  He shook his head, "No honey.  I'll have one of the nurses take you to his room.  Wait there and try to get some sleep, it'll be a few hours before we're done."  Lyn sighed, but didn't give him the fight he'd anticipated.  She desperately wanted to go with Brian, but knew if Ted said she couldn't there was a reason.  So she resigned herself to spend the next few hours in a hospital room trying not to worry herself to death.  Ted pulled her into a hug, "Try to get some rest.  I'll see you in a few hours."  Lyn nodded, stepping back as they wheeled Brian out of the room and down the hall.  "Ms. Jackson, if you'll follow me, I'll show you where his room is," a nurse said.  Lyn nodded, following the woman down the hall and to the elevators.
Please God, don't let this be serious, please... she prayed as the elevator doors closed.

*Lucas stood in the hall watching Lyn get on the elevator.  "Will, why don't you go with Brian," he suggested.  William nodded, "Where are you going?"  "I think someone needs to tell Gideon what's going on," Lucas said.  William looked at him sternly, "We aren't suppose to leave them."  "I know," Lucas said, "But I don't think they anticipated this."  "Even so, I can't be in two places at once," William argued, "And our first priority is their safety."  Lucas sighed, "You're right, but I still think Gideon needs to know what's going on here."  "Well, let's wait until he's back in his room and they are together, then one of us can go," William said.  Lucas nodded his head, "Alright, meet you in his room in a few."  William nodded, disappearing.  Lucas sighed, heading up to Brian's room to be with Lyn.*

Tara Gail looked up from her crib and laughed.  "Shhh little one," Lane said, smiling at her.  "Yeah, you're gonna wake up mommy and daddy," Mitchell said.  Tara Gail laughed again, reaching up for them.  "You want us to hold you?" Mitchell asked.  Lane reached in and picked her up, bouncing her in his arms, "You little one have a bright future."  Tara Gail smiled at him.  Mitchell sat down in the rocking chair next to the crib, "You know, this has been the easiest assignment we've had in a long time."  Lane nodded, "And the most fun."

Leighanne walked into the room and turned on the light, her breath catching in her throat.  Mitchell stood up quickly raising his hands up, "Don't be scared, it's just us."  Leighanne took a deep breath trying to calm down, "I'm sorry.  I'm still not used to you guys being here."  Lane smiled, handing Tara Gail over to her mother, "Sorry for waking you."  Leighanne smiled, "Don't be."  She watched as the two smiled at her child, "So you guys have much experience with children?"  "No, this is our first," Lane said.  "Yeah, after this, I may ask to be moved," Mitchell said.  "Moved?  To where?" Leighanne asked.  "Different division of protectors," he said.  "Oh," Leighanne said as Gary came in the room.  "Honey, who are you talking to?" he asked, looking up and seeing the two warriors standing in the room.  Gary smiled, "Don't tell me.  You guys were playing with Tara again huh?"  Both angels smiled.  Gary laughed shaking his head at the two.

Lyn got up and moved out of the way as they brought Brian into the room and got him settled.  He woke up briefly as they moved him from the gurny to the bed, but then settled back to sleep.  Ted came into the room with another man.  "Lyn, honey, this is Dr. Skinner.  He's the head of the Cardiology department," Ted said.  Lyn shook the man's hand, "Nice to meet you."  "Likewise," he said.  "So do you know anything yet?" Lyn asked.  "Not yet, we're still waiting for most of the results to come back," Dr. Skinner answered.  Lyn bit her bottom lip, "Oh, OK."  "It'll probably be morning before we know anything," Ted added.  Lyn nodded, walking back over to the bed and sitting down on the side.  She gently ran her fingers down Brian's cheek, silently praying for the hundredth time that night.  Ted walked over, "Can I get you anything?"  She shook her head.  "OK, Dr. Skinner and I are going to go get some coffee and look over the results as they come in.  We'll be in my office if you need us," Ted said.  Lyn nodded as the two made their way out of the room.

Brian opened his eyes and looked up at her.  She smiled at him, "Did I wake you?"  He shook his head, "You look tired."  Lyn laughed, "I am.  It's three in the morning."  Brian scooted himself over and patted the bed next to him, "Come on."  Lyn kicked her shoes off and climbed in next to him.  She put her arm under Brian's neck and let him rest his head on her shoulder.  He wrapped his arm around her, hugging her to him, "That's better," he said.  Lyn smiled at him, "Yeah it is."  Brian closed his eyes and settled in, "I love you," he said as he drifted to sleep.  Lyn let her tears fall as she held him, "I love you to," she said, silently crying herself to sleep.

*Lucas watched as the two fell asleep.  "I think it's OK to go now," William said, "As long as they're together, I can handle it."  Lucas nodded, "I won't be long."  He vanished from the room, leaving William alone.*

Gideon, Jade, Tracy and several others sat in the desert.  They had been there since before Nick and Tara had come back.  "I hope it doesn't take them to much longer," Jade said.  "Me either," Tracy added.  Gideon laughed, "You two never were much for stake outs were you?"  "Well, that's really not in my job description," Tracy said laughing.  "What isn't in our job description?" Jade asked, smiling.  Tracy shrugged, "Good point."  "Well the fact that Ephah could be coming back with us, that intrigues me," Gideon said.  "Yeah, it seems Nick has a knack for finding the ones that could be turned," Jade said.  "What doesn't Nick have a talent for," Tracy said, "He's been blessed with every gift there is."  "True," Gideon said.  "Yeah, and have you noticed that since he and Tara have been allowed to be together, that they seem to complement each others gifts as well?" Jade noticed.  "Yes they do.  Like it was meant for them to be together," Gideon said.

Just then Lucas appeared next to Gideon.  Everyone sat up.  "Lucas, what are you doing here?" Jade asked.  "I thought you should know, Brian's in the hospital," he said.  "What's wrong?" Tracy asked.  He shook his head, "I don't know.  They are running tests on him, but it definitely has something to do with his heart."  "Oh no," Tracy whispered.  "Did they send for Nick and Tara?" Gideon asked.  "No, I just thought you should know what's going on.  Will and I aren't blessed with being able to heal like you guys are.  I thought that one of you might want to come back," Lucas said.  The three looked at each other, debating their situation.  Gideon sighed, "I can't spare anyone.  We don't know what we will need to do when they are ready."  Lucas nodded, "I understand."  "Keep a close watch on him," Tracy said.  "And keep us informed as to what's going on," Jade added.  "I will," Lucas said, vanishing from their sight.
