| Chapter 27 A week had passed since Kevin was admitted into the psychiatric ward of the hospital. He had undergone countless tests, all of which he scored in the normal range. He was becoming increasingly depressed, he still blamed himself for not being strong enough to stop Robert before it all got out of hand. Howie had come by a few times to see him, but Kevin could tell he really didn't want to be there. None of the other guys had come by, of course Kevin didn't blame them, after what he did. Kevin heard someone come in the door, he looked to see a nurse that he'd not seen before. She was short, maybe 5'2" and petite. She had shoulder length brown hair and deep brown eyes. Hum, she's kinda pretty for a nurse, Kevin thought. "Hello Kevin, how you feeling today?" she asked. "OK, I guess," he answered. "Let me introduce myself, my name is Tracy and I've been assigned to you for a while," she said. "Oh, OK," Kevin said, wondering why he was getting his own nurse. Am I that bad off? "Kevin?" Tracy said pulling him from his thoughts. Kevin looked at her, "Yeah?" "I may be getting a little personal here, but why is Kristin not here with you?" she asked. Kevin looked away from her, "I told her not to come." "Why did you do that?" Tracy asked. "Because there's nothing she can do here, and I couldn't stand to see her look at me, knowing what I did," he answered. Tracy walked over and put her hand on Kevin's shoulder. Kevin looked into her eyes, there was something there, it reminded him of someone but he couldn't recall who. "Let me know if there is anything I can get for you OK?" Tracy said. "All right," Kevin answered as Tracy walked toward the door. "I'll be back to check on you in a while," she said as she walked out the door. Kevin watched her leave, Who does she remind me of? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Brian was in his room working with the physical therapist. Over the past week he had recovered remarkably well, and he was starting to regain some use of his arm. The doctor had talked about letting him go home soon. The FBI had come and interviewed Brian and Tara, neither of which could remember anything that had happened. They had also interviewed Kevin with his attorney, who also had a problem remembering what had happened. The FBI had left, closing their case due to lack of evidence. Everyone seemed happy about that. The physical therapist left and Nick walked in to see Brian. "Hey Bri, can I talk to you?" Nick asked walking through the door. "Sure, what's up?" Brian asked rubbing his arm. Nick sat down and sighed, "It's about Tara." Brian looked at him, "What about her?" he asked. "Well, I really like her, but I'm getting mixed signals." Nick said. Brian sat up straighter in bed, "What do you mean mixed signals?" "Well a few days ago we went up to the roof to get some air, and well I kissed her." Brian's eyes widened in surprise. "And well she put a stop to it and said she wasn't ready for that yet. She told me about her fianc, did you know about that?" Nick asked. "Yeah, we talked about that while we were in the woods," Brian answered. "Oh, well anyway, I got the I just wanna be friends speech, but sometimes the way she looks at me, I just think that there could be more to us than just friends." Nick said. "Nick, if all she wants is to be friends, you have to honor that," Brian said. "I know, but I really do like her," Nick said looking at the floor. "Well look at it this way, friends is better than nothing, right?" Brian said. Nick looked up at Brian, "Yeah I guess." They sat in silence for a moment, "Bri, when you guys talk, do I ever come up in the conversation?" Nick asked. Brian looked at his friend and smiled. "I knew it!" Nick said. Brian looked out the window, he could see Leighanne and A.J. sitting outside. "Where is she anyway?" he asked. "Who, Tara?" Nick asked. "Yeah," Brian said. "Oh, she and Howie went to see Kevin," Nick answered, noticing Brian flinch at the mention of Kevin's name. "Oh OK," Brian said. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tara and Howie were on the elevator on their way to see Kevin. "So, what's up with you and Nick?" Howie asked smiling. "What do you mean?" Tara asked in shock. "Tara, anyone that looks at you two can tell that you like each other," Howie said. Tara smiled, "Howie, we're just friends, that's all." Howie smiled back at Tara, "Yeah, for now, but I know someone who would like it to be more than that." Tara looked at the floor, "I know, but it just can't." The elevator stopped and the doors opened. Tara and Howie walked out into the hall and down to where Kevin's room was. There was a nurse coming out of Kevin's room. Tara stopped dead in her tracks, "Umm, Howie you go ahead, I'll be in in a minute," she said. Howie looked at her confused, "OK." As Howie walked in Kevin's room, Tara walked up to the nurse. "What are you doing here?" Tara asked. "I was sent here for Kevin," Tracy answered. "Why, what's going on with Kevin?" Tara asked concerned. "I'm not sure yet, but you've got enough to handle with Brian and the guys, let me take care of Kevin," Tracy said. "All right," Tara said heading towards Kevin's door, "but keep me informed OK?" "I will," Tracy said. Chapter 28 |
