| Chapter 19 Nick and Tara had been gone a couple of hours, when they finally returned. "Is there any food left?" Howie asked with a smile. Tara let out a laugh, and Nick shot Howie a �go to hell' look. "Sorry Howie, we got to talking and lost track of time," Tara said. "I see," Howie said with an even bigger smile. A.J. jumped up from the couch, "Well I'm starving, D let's go get something to eat." "All right," Howie said getting up. "Howie, where's Kevin at?" Nick asked noticing he wasn't there. "He went for a walk, said he'd be back in a while," Howie said as he turned and followed A.J. down the hall. Suddenly Nick was very worried. "Nick, what is it?" Tara asked seeing his mood change. "I don't know, Kevin has been acting funny lately. He said he was seeing a doctor, but wouldn't tell us anything else. I guess I'm just wondering why he's off walking instead of here with Brian." he said. "How long has he been sick?" Tara asked. "I don't know, a couple months maybe," Nick answered. "Ohh," Tara said, thinking of when Brian had said the letters started, and feeling a sense of urgency to get back to Brian's room. "Nick, I'm gonna go see if Leighanne needs a break," she said as she walked toward Brian's room. "OK, I'll come with ya," Nick said as he followed her. Leighanne was watching Brian sleep when Tara and Nick walked in. She got up and met them beside the door, "He's asleep." she whispered. "Lee, I can stay for a while if you want to go get something to eat," Tara said. Leighanne looked back at Brian, then back at Tara. "Yeah, if you don't mind, I am kinda hungry," she said. Tara nodded her head and walked past Leighanne. "Where's the cafeteria at?" Leighanne asked. "I'll take you," Nick said, "We need to talk anyway." Leighanne gave Nick a knowing smile, "OK, we'll be back in a bit," she said as they walked out the door. Tara was alone with Brian, and scared to death. She could feel that something wasn't right, but she didn't know what. She focused on Brian, he was sleeping soundly. Tara was a little tired herself, so she reclined the chair. She reached over and took Brian's hand in hers, that way if he woke up she would know. She closed her eyes, and was soon asleep. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tara was in the wheat field again. She felt a sense of panic and urgency. As she looked around she could see two men in the distance. Tara knew what was about to take place, she ran as hard as she could towards them. As she approached, she could see the man take out a gun and point it toward Brian. Tara never slowed down. She ran straight into Brian and pushed him out of the way. Then she turned to face the other man. She still couldn't see the mans face, it was hidden in some kind of shadow. "I won't let you do this!" she said. "You have no say in the matter," the man spat out. Tara took a step toward the man, "I do have a say, and it's not gonna happen!" she yelled. The man said nothing, but instead split into two people. Now Tara was facing two men, she couldn't believe what she was seeing, "What the ...." One of the men took a step toward Tara, and the other grabbed his arm as if to stop him. Then they disappeared. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tara awoke to the sound of someone coming into the room. She saw Kevin closing the door behind him. Tara got up and walked over to him, "Hi Kevin, Brian's asleep," she whispered. Kevin turned around to face her, Tara was paralyzed by fear. Oh my God, those eyes! She took a step back as Kevin locked the door and shut the blinds. "Kevin what are you doing?" Tara asked. He said nothing as he walked toward her. Tara had backed herself into the corner, when Kevin grabbed her by the hair and slammed her head into the side of the sink. Tara fell to the floor unconscious. Kevin then walked over to the side of the bed. Brian was just waking up, "Hey Kev," he said looking around the room, "Where's Leighanne?" Kevin grabbed Brian's good arm forcing it into the mattress, "I'm not Kevin!!" Chapter 20 |
