Chapter 93

Kira walked down to the kitchen.  She was still half asleep, and almost walked into Sarah as she rounded the corner.  "Oh, sorry Sarah," she said.  "No problem," Sarah said, smiling.  A.J. was sitting at the table with Howie and Lyn.  "You guys are up early," Kira said.  "Yeah, couldn't sleep," A.J. said.  "So Lyn, is Nick really doing OK?" Howie asked, "I know he said he was, but you know how he is."  Lyn laughed, "Yeah, trust me I do.  He really is doing well.  His last few check-ups have been good, and he's gaining more strength everyday."  "Good," A.J. said.  "Yeah, he looks great," Sarah said, "I've never seen him look so, um, fit."  A.J. laughed, "That wasn't what you were gonna say, was it?"  Sarah blushed, "No, I was gonna say hot, but I thought that might make you jealous."  They all laughed.  "Howie, what time are we suppose to go to the attorneys office?" Lyn asked.  "We're suppose to be there at ten," he answered.  Lyn looked at the clock on the wall, "Then I guess I better go get Nick up."  "I see one thing hasn't changed about him," A.J. said.  "Yeah, that boy never did get up before eleven," Howie said.  "I think the traveling kinda tired him out yesterday," Lyn said, getting up.  "Yeah, that's the first time he's left there, and that's a hell of a long trip," A.J. said.  Lyn walked out of the room, and headed upstairs.  A.J. looked at Howie and smiled, "Let's go call Kevin and wake them up."  "Oh no, last time I did that I got a thirty minute lecture on why you shouldn't call someone before nine in the morning," Howie said.  A.J. shook his head, "You don't have an adventurous bone in your body do you?"  Howie smiled and looked at Kira, "Yeah I do, just not for that."  "Howard!" Kira yelled, turning beet red.

Lyn walked into the room she and Nick were sharing and closed the door.  Nick was curled up in bed, with a pillow over his head.  Lyn walked over and sat down on the edge of the bed, picking the pillow up and laying it over to the side.  She looked down and smiled.  Nick's eyes were open, and he was staring at her.  "You playing possum?" Lyn asked.  He laughed, "No, just laying here thinking."  "About what?" she asked.  "Stuff," he signed.  "What kind of stuff?" she asked.  "Just how much things have changed in the last six months," he signed.  "Oh," she said.  "You come to get me?" he asked.  "Yeah, we have to be at your attorneys office in a few hours," Lyn signed.  "Oh, I almost forgot about that," Nick signed.  He sat up and stretched.  "Is everyone else up already?" he asked.  "Yeah, they're all downstairs," Lyn said.  "OK, I'll be down in a few minutes," he signed, standing up, and looking around for his shirt.  Lyn watched him, and smiled.  Nick looked up at her, "What are you smiling about?"  "Oh, just something Sarah said," she signed.  "What'd she say?" Nick asked.  "That you looked hot," Lyn answered, "And I'm inclined to agree with her."  Nick laughed and threw a pillow at her, missing her by a mile.  Lyn ran out of the room before he could take aim again.

"Kris, do you guys have any chocolate chip ice cream?" Leighanne asked, her head in the freezer looking around.  "Um, no we don't," Kristin said.  "Honey, you can't eat ice cream for breakfast," Gary said.  Leighanne turned around and looked at him, "We have to go to the store."  Kevin and Kristin looked at each other and laughed.  "Guys, I can't help it, but if I don't get some ice cream real soon, I'm gonna kill someone," Leighanne said, in the most sweet voice she could muster.  "OK, let's go," Gary said getting up.  "Thank you," she said, almost running to the door.  Gary followed her, then looked back at Kevin and mouthed the words, HELP ME!  After Gary had shut the door, Kevin and Kristin burst out laughing.  "Oh my God, that is so cute!" Kristin said.  "I dunno about cute, but the boy truly loves her, I'll give him that," Kevin said.  "Oh, and if that was me, you wouldn't go to the store?" Kristin said.  Kevin looked at her, "When did we start talking about us?"  "Right now," she said smiling.  "Yes, I'm sure I would go to the store.  I wouldn't like it, but I'd go," he said.  Kristin walked over and sat down in Kevin's lap, "You ever think about having kids?"  Kevin raised his eyebrows, "Are we talking hypothetical, or is there something I need to know?"  She laughed, "Hypothetically."  "Oh," he said, letting out a breath he didn't know he was holding, "Yeah, someday, but not now."  "OK," she said, getting up and walking over to the freezer.  "What are you looking for?" Kevin asked.  "Now I'm hungry for ice cream," she said.  "Oh Lord," Kevin said, laughing.

Brian woke up and turned over.  He looked around, seeing Tara sitting in the window, looking out at their back yard.  He sat up, "Something wrong?"  She turned her head and looked at him, "No, just thinking."  He got up and walked over to her, "About?"  "The party tomorrow.  Making sure we've done everything we need to," she said.  "I think I've done that a thousand times already," Brian said, sitting down next to her, letting her lean on him.  "Are you nervous?" she asked.  He laughed, "Yeah kinda.  What about you?"  "Immensely," she said.  He pulled her to him, hugging her, "It's just a party, why are we so nervous?"  "I dunno," she said smiling.  "You talk to Lyn about coming over early?" he asked.  "Yeah, she and Nick are coming in the morning.  They're gonna make up some excuse to leave the house, and come over here," she said.  "Good," Brian said.

Brian looked down at her, "So did you and Nick have a good talk last night?"  "Yeah we did," she said.  "But you aren't gonna tell me what you talked about?" he asked.  "No.  It was just some things we needed to say to each other," Tara said.  "I figured that much," he said, getting up.  "Where are you going?" she asked.  "Down to check on that thing again," he said.  Tara laughed, "Bri, if it hasn't fallen over yet, it's not going to."  "I know, but I don't wanna get on it tomorrow and fall on my rear," he said smiling.  "I dunno, that would be entertaining," she said.  "Hey!" Brian said, acting hurt.  "I'm just kidding," Tara said.  Brian looked at her suspiciously, "OK, you know that if it falls now I'm gonna think you did it on purpose."  "Who me?  I would never," she said, innocently.  "Uh huh, right.  Sure you wouldn't," he said.  Tara stood up and put her hand on her hip, "Brian Thomas, you take that back, before I have to come over there and hurt you."  "See, you would hurt me," he said teasing.  "That's it," she said, going after him.  Brian ran out of the room, followed closely by Tara.

"OK Nick, if you will sign here," the attorney said.  Lyn translated for him, and Nick signed in the correct place.  "Now, you need to take this down to the courthouse and have it recorded," the attorney said.  "OK, thanks," Howie said.  Nick shook hands with the attorney, and followed everyone out the door.  "Where are we going?" Nick asked.  "To the courthouse," Lyn signed to him.  "Oh yeah," he said.  It was a short drive over to the courthouse, and they found the county clerks office to record the deed.  Howie took it in and had it recorded, then came out, smiling ear to ear.  "Well D, you are now the proud owner of a house," Nick signed.  "Yeah, I am," he said.  Lyn laughed at him.  "What?  This is the first house I've ever bought," Howie said.  "Really?  I thought you would've had at least two by now," Lyn said.  "No, never could find one I liked," Howie said.  "And you never had someone to share one with until now," Nick said.  "Yeah, that too," Howie said.

They walked down to the car, and headed toward home.  Howie made his usual turn past Brian's house.  "What are they doing?" Nick asked.  Everyone looked out the windows.  Brian was running across the front lawn, Tara close on his heels.  She tackled him, bringing him down to the ground.  "Dang, she needs to be playing football or something," Howie said.  "Honk the horn," Lyn said.  Howie did, and Brian and Tara both looked up and waved.  Nick and Lyn waved back as they drove past.  Lyn looked back as they turned the corner, seeing Tara get up and run towards the house, Brian chasing her this time.  Lyn laughed.  "I swear, those two have more energy than the energizer bunny," Nick said.  "God, don't say that to them, Lord knows what hair color she'd put you in," Howie said.  Nick and Lyn burst out laughing, and didn't stop until they reached Howie's drive.
