Chapter 8

Nick, Howie, and Leighanne were in the kitchen preparing supper when Brian and Tara walked into the house.  All three stopped what they were doing and looked at them.  "Are you guys OK?" Nick asked.  Brian and Tara looked at each other, "Yeah I guess," they both said in unison.  "God I hate it when you two do that," Leighanne said with a laugh.  They both looked at her, "Do what?" again in unison.  Howie and Nick were cracking up.  "That," Leighanne said.

They all sat down at the table and began eating.  Tara could tell that Nick wanted to know what was going on, and she new the conversation would soon come.  She could also see Leighanne shooting Brian looks across the table.  Howie just looked concerned.  Tara caught Brian's eye and gave him the you wanna start or should I' look.  Brian nodded his head, put his fork down and cleared his throat.  "Um guys, Tara and I need to tell you what's been going on," Brian said not looking at them, but looking straight at Tara.

Everyone stopped eating and looked at him.  "Tara and I are sharing dreams again," Brian said.  "What are they?" Leighanne asked.
Don't tell her, Tara thought.  Brian looked at Tara with a why not' look.  Tara's eyes grew wide, "Did you hear that?" she asked.  Brian nodded his head and smiled.  "Uh hello," Nick said, "What are we not hearing that you two are?"  Brian and Tara looked at him, "Nothing," they said in unison.  "Tara?" Nick said, and she could see he was getting frustrated.  "OK, here's the deal," Tara said, "Brian and I are sharing dreams.  We don't know what they mean, but we do know that something is gonna happen.  And no, we don't know what it is."  "How long has this been going on?" Howie asked.  "Just started this week," Brian said.  "You're not telling us everything, I can tell," Leighanne said.  Brian and Tara looked at each other, "We're telling you all we can right now," he said. She's not gonna like that answer, Brian thought.  Tara looked at him and shook her head in agreement.  Brian realized that she could hear his thoughts just as he could hear hers.

"OK, you two have some sort of secret language going on or what, cause I'm only getting half a conversation over here," Nick said.  "We can hear what the other is thinking," Tara said.  "Oh Lord, when did this start?" Leighanne asked not believing what she was hearing.  "Just now," Brian answered.  "Can you guys hear our thoughts?" Nick asked.  "Nick, if they could, we wouldn't be sitting here," Leighanne said clearly miffed.  Brian looked at Leighanne, "Honey, you know we can't help this, it just happens."  "Yeah, that's what you keep telling me," she said.
Brian, stop now before this turns into a fight, Tara thought.  Brian started to say something, then stopped and looked at Tara and nodded his head.  "OK, stop that," Nick said, "If your gonna talk to each other do it out loud, your driving me nuts!"  Everyone laughed.  "Sorry," Brian and Tara said.

They finished the rest of their supper without much more conversation.  Leighanne and Brian were headed out the door when Howie called after them.  "Hey guys, you are going to Kevin's tomorrow right?" he asked.  Brian looked confused, "Kevin's, what's going on over there?"  "Oh, I forgot to tell you, Kevin is having a cook out and he wants us to come," Leighanne said.  "Oh OK," Brian said, "Then yeah I guess we'll be there."  "Good," Howie said.  Leighanne leaned over to Howie, "Don't worry.  I know Kira, she's a very nice person.  You two will have fun."  Howie smiled, "Thanks."  Brian looked at them both, "What'd I miss?"  Leighanne grabbed him and headed out the door, "I'll tell you on the way home," she said.  "See you tomorrow," Howie called as they got in the car.

Later that night, Nick and Tara were sitting on the couch watching a movie.  Howie had already gone to bed, he said he was tired from the flight, but Tara figured that he wanted to give them time to talk.  "Angel, what's really going on?" he asked.  Tara looked up at him, "Just what we told you."  Nick sat up straighter and Tara turned to face him.  "No, there's more.  Just like Leighanne said, you're not telling everything," he said.  Tara could see the pain in his eyes that she was keeping something from him.

Tara looked away from him, debating on whether she should tell or not.  "Tara, please.  I'm worried about you," Nick said.  She looked at him, "It's not me you should be worried about."  "Tara, tell me," he said.  Tara took a deep breath, "Nick, I promised Brian that I wouldn't tell, and he made the same promise to me."  Nick looked at her a little hurt, "You really aren't gonna tell me are you?"  "No sweetie, I'm not," she answered, "But I will say this.  I think that Brian will need us soon, and I mean in a big way.  When it happens, don't question anything I do, OK?"  Nick looked at her confused, "Tara, I don't understand.  Do you know what it is that's gonna happen?"  "No, it's just a very strong feeling I have," she answered.  Nick thought for a moment, "OK, but I'm still worried about you, whether you know it or not, when these things happen it takes a toll on you too."  Tara smiled at him, "Well I guess I can't make you not worry."  "No you can't," Nick said with a smile.  "Nick, thanks for being so understanding about this.  Sometimes I don't even understand what's going on between me and Brian, and I know it gets on your nerves........." Tara said.  Nick stopped her in mid sentence, "Honey, I understand that you two will always have this bond, but I know that you don't love Brian like you love me.  That's how I can just let those things go, sure sometimes I'm a little jealous that you two have that, but what we have is so much more, it doesn't even compare."  Tara looked at him and a joy filled her face, "Thank you for understanding," she said.  Nick pulled her into his arms, "No, thank you," he said.  "For what?" she asked.  "For being who you are, and loving me," Nick whispered in her ear.

"Leighanne, please don't be mad at me," Brian said.  They had rode home in silence, and were now in their bedroom.  Leighanne was in the bathroom getting ready for bed.  "Brian, it's not that I'm mad at you.  It's just that I don't understand this bond you two have, and it hurts when you two share these secrets and you won't even tell me what's going on," she said.  "Lee, I don't even understand it most of the time, things just happen," Brian said.  Leighanne turned and stared at him, "Brian, you know you aren't telling me everything.  Why can't you just tell me?"  Brian sat on the bed and looked at the floor, "I promised Tara I wouldn't tell, and you wouldn't believe me anyway."  "Brian, how do you know I wouldn't believe you?  You never even gave me a chance," Leighanne said, obviously hurt.  "Lee, I just can't.  Not right now anyway," Brian said.  Leighanne walked over and stood right in front of Brian, "Fine.  That's just great, things are happening to you, and you can't even tell your wife.  I thought we were suppose to be best friends, no secrets from each other.  What happened to that?" she said.  Brian looked up at her, and she could see he was hurt by what she just said.

"Lee, we are best friends.  But this I can't tell you right now," Brian said, wondering how he could ever explain any of this to her.  "OH, so you can't tell me your wife, but you can share everything with this girl that you've only known for a little over a year!" Leighanne yelled.  "Lee!  She saved my life last year, not to mention the fact that she was an angel," Brian said.  "Was, that's the key word here Brian!  She was an angel, she's not anymore.  She's human just like you and me, and I don't like what is going on between you two!" Leighanne yelled.  Brian looked at her with shock, "Lee, what is that suppose to mean?"  Leighanne turned and walked away from him mumbling, "God, if you have to ask........stupider than I thought."  Brian got up and followed her into the hall, he grabbed her arm and turned her around.  As Leighanne was turning around she threw her hand up and slapped Brian across the face.

Brian just stood there looking at her, there was shock and sadness in his eyes.  Leighanne couldn't believe what she had done, "Brian, I.........."  Brian put his hand up for her to stop, and walked past her.  He went downstairs and headed out the front door.  Leighanne could hear the car make it's way down the drive.  She went back to the bedroom, laid down and cried herself to sleep.
