| Decoys: Decoys have their place in fox hunting. Especially when hunting with a shotgun where you need that critter up close and personal. Not all decoys are created equal. To be effective, a decoy HAS TO HAVE MOVEMENT! There are a ton of decoys on the market and some will frustrate more than help. Some guys advocate getting a small stuffed toy from the local discount store and just setting it out in front of you as you call. That sort of a set up will work some of the time. But, if it sits there without movement, chances are good the fox won't even see it. The whole idea behind a decoy is to grab and hold the fox's attention giving you more time and space for a shot. If the decoy doesn't do that, all amounts to is added weight and something for you to screw around with. So, movement is important. Second is the sound. Many motion decoys are loud! I'm here to tell you that when you go out hunting on a full moon night with no wind, it's QUIET! A motor running in a decoy will NOT be good when it comes time for the fox to get close. Silence is a must. Not many decoys are on the market that are completely silent. Third in order of importance is ease of use. If you have to get out there and mess around setting up a decoy you are burning valuable hunting time and, frankly, it's a pain in the butt. For example, you could use that store bought stuffed toy and tie a string onto it. When the fox comes in, jerk and tug the string to make it move. Sure it works. But.... You have to set out the decoy, string out the line and then you have to move it WHILE you are calling and trying to get ready for the shot. I almost never will endorse a product but in this case I will. Easily the best decoy on the market is the PREDATOR ENTICER made by the maker of the tail-wagger. It's motorized, good movement, silent, easy to use and affordable. If you are going to go with a decoy, don't mess around. Go to www.tail-wagger.com and order one. |
