The Bailey Two Connection

Descendants of Comfort Bailey (4032)

Generation One

1. Comfort1 BAILEY (4032);1 born 1749 in Haddam, Middlesex, CT; << Subj: GenForum Query of 7-9-98: Bailey/Hempstead/Devereaux

On 4/18/99 7:48:24 AM Mountain Daylight Time I received the following message from Nancy Stanger, a Webber/Devereaux/Bailey researcher. She had received the message from another source that did not wish to be quoted on the net.

My g.g. grandfather, Ansel Udell, was born in Stephentown, NY, in 1804. He was a son of John & Phebe (Bailey) Udell. I believe that Phebe's father was Comfort Bailey who was born in Haddam, CT, in 1749. John & Phebe Udell moved their family to Jefferson, OH, in 1817.
Ansel Udell kept a journal and I am in the process of trying to identify some of the family members he mentioned. Perhaps you will be able to shed some light on one of the questions raised:
In July,1824, Ansel Udell's cousins, Lewis Devereaux & Amanda Devereaux, visited their relatives in Jefferson, OH. They were accompanied by their mother (no first name given). Amanda stayed about 11 months. Then, in June, 1825, Ansel wrote " took Amanda and my mother to Busti, Chautaque (sic), Co., NY." Since his mother went along I suspect that the Devereaux cousins and their mother were connected to the Bailey family. Phebe was either acting as chaperone or going to visit a sister (?).

The following email message as pertains to the Baileys was received from Nancy Stanger. It was from the same person that authored the letter above. It is posted here until further information may be researched for confirmation of data.

I believe that I was told that Joseph Bailey Stuart was the name of Polly (Devereaux) Stuart's son...............I will have to go through all my records to find out where I came up with that information. Seems probable that Thomas Bailey Stuart is correct; you are "closer" to that branch of the family and know more about that line than I.
It will be difficult to answer your last question (paragraph 4, below), because so many loose threads must be woven together to create the whole Bailey fabric but I will start by explaining how I arrived at my conclusion (re "our" Comfort Bailey's father).
I already had, on my "work table," many pieces of the Bailey Puzzle, thanks to the Journal of my Great Great Grandfather, Ansel Udell. Ansel Udell, as you already know, was one of Phebe (Bailey) Udell's sons.
I sent an inquiry to the Trumbull County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society. As a result, I was "introduced" to Scott Hall. Ansel Udell's Journal provided Scott with proof of what he had long been seeking; his Bailey family connection! Scott's ancestor, Levi Bailey, was a brother to Phebe (Bailey) Udell. Scott has shared his Bailey information with me and continues to devote a great deal of his time to our Bailey research. He has been an enormous help!
At the urging of my husband, I contacted the Town Clerk of Sand Lake, NY. Ansel Udell, in his Journal, mentioned having lived for awhile in Sand Lake; my husband thought clues would be found in that town. The Town Clerk, Judy Rowe, put me in touch with Dennis Marr. Dennis provided the missing pieces that completed the "who-was-Comfort Bailey's-father ?" part of the Bailey Puzzle.
Dennis Marr also came up with Abigail Lewis, whom we believe to have been the mother of Phebe (Bailey) Udell. As you know, your Huldah Hempstead theory has rocked this particular boat. As yet, we have no primary proof that Abigail Lewis was the mother of Phebe (Bailey) Udell. Circumstantial evidence is, however, abundant. We do have proof that she and Comfort Bailey married in Tyringham, MA, in 1770. Phebe was born 1774/5 (her brother, Levi, was born in 1772).
We DO know that Comfort Bailey, a native of Connecticut, was Phebe (Bailey) Udell's father. We have this on the best authority ~ the statement made by her son, John Udell, III, in his famous diary. I accept John's word, based on his first-hand knowledge, as proof.
Dennis Marr wrote a letter (to me) that clearly outlines his discoveries. I will snail-mail a copy of this to you........just for starters.

The following is the reply that Nancy Stanger sent to the unidentified researcher above:

"As I have said before, the only information I have on Comfort and Huldah is a letter from Celestia Weber Nixon, Huldah's granddaughter, to her son L. A. W. Nixon written in 1905. She states, "My mothers maiden name was Amanda Devereaux her mothers maiden name was Huldah Bailey-her mothers maiden name was Huldah Hempsted. That is as far back as I know." As far as Comfort is concerned, in research done by my great great uncle, he states that "Hulda was the daughter of Comfort Bailey and Hulda Hempstead." Unfortunately he did not site sources, so I have no idea where he got that information. No, I do not have any primary sources to verify the above information. That is what I am looking for.
Who is Joseph Bailey Stuart? I have a Thomas Bailey Stuart, but not a Joseph.
What primary source do you have that Comfort Bailey, a native of Connecticut, was the father of Phebe Bailey Udell? And that her mother was Abigail?
I am certainly open to looking at any and all possibilities."

Generation Two

2. Hulda2 BAILEY (2956) (Comfort1);1,2

Hulda Bailey (2956) married William Louis Devereaux (2955) 1796 in Stevenstown, Renassler, NY; Source 179 states marriage was in Albany, NY;3,4

The following paragraph is from a letter from Celestia Weber Nixon to her son, "Hulda Bailey was an educated worman. After her husband was drowned she taught a select school and supported her five children. She was also a fine tailoress and taught days and sewed evenings (Then they used tallow candles). In the course of a few years she married again, a Mr. Nelson."3

Hulda Bailey (2956) married Timothy Nelson (2972) after 1808; This comes from a part of message from Nancy Stanger, 10/19/99. " The Nelson that Hulda married after William drowned was Timothy Nelson, born in England, 1744. They had two children, Larson and Franklin."3,4

William Louis DEVEREAUX (2955) was born circa 1769.5

William Louis Devereaux (2955) died circa 1808 in Rochester, NY; The following information was given to me by Nancy Stanger. It came from a letter written by Celestia Webber to her son. Celestia was a granddaughter of William Devereaux.

"Wm. Devereaux was of French decent, son of a high French army officer. He was drowned in the Black River in the northern part of NY in the year 1808, when Amanda was 1 year old. He had gone with a company to trap for otter and other furs which were sent to NY and were sold to the Astors. He with the rest of the men had their sleds loaded with a fine lot of furs and they were to start on their journey back to their homes the next morning, when he left the rest of the men to cook supper while he crossed the river on the ice to take to a man some traps that they had borrowed. When he didn't return for supper, they went to look after him and a few feet from the shore they saw a hole in the ice and the pole he took with him to try the ice, lying near. His body was recovered the same night hours after he left to cross the river - taken the traps to the owners and was returning when he went thought the ice."

The following Source of the source is Mrs. M.D. Case. Record of Alvin devereaux of Depont, NY. "William was the youngest brother and was drowned in Shemong Bay (Chaumont County, I take it, at the entrance of the St. Lawrence river in Jefferson County, NY)."6,7
