The Fox Project Website at FTDNA

The Fox Surname Project has as its goal the integration of Y-DNA testing with conventional genealogical sources for the purpose of researching the Fox Surname. Primarily, the project uses the services of Familytreedna.com (FTDNA), a leading test lab, and their results are posted and discussed on the Fox Website at FTDNA. There, links are provided for joining the project. To join, it is necessary to provide information on the most distant known ancestor and agree that the results may be posted anonymously to FTDNA’s Ysearch database. While mtDNA testing of the all-female-line pedigree is also permitted it is not emphasized since this is a surname project.

Results from other test labs are not included on the above FTDNA website. Wherever known, these have now been gathered together, grouped into related categories and compared with FTDNA results. This is the main purpose of the website you are now perusing. The groupings are the same as on the FTDNA Fox Website and mainly reflect deep ancestry as indicated by the Haplogroup assignment.

The Introduction gives a brief project history, a discussion of how to get the most out of DNA testing and describes several project Success Stories. Definitions of Terms like Haplogroup and haplotype are provided. While deep ancestry is not the main goal of the project, a section on Deep Ancestry is provided. The Fox project is in the forefront of research on identifying founder haplotype clusters reflecting deep ancestry in the most common Haplogroup, R1b. Finally, a discussion of possible Origins of the Fox Name is provided.
