| (C)Fox Silverwing and respective owners Do not distribute Do not alter Tip: when using Internet explorer press Control+F to bring up find ----------------------------------------------- Glossary (Cornerian weapons/military) Andross: once a brilliant mind of the Cornerian since counsel he became increasingly distrust until he was banished to Venom a distant planet in the Lylat system, latter after his banishment he assembled an armada to conquer the Lylat system, and nearly succeed. (see also Cornerian history) Armor (vehicles): large tracked or wheeled vehicles designed around a large gun, blaster, or missile system plated with various types of armor, commonly called a tank (See also mobile armor, Power armor, armor column) Arwing (SFX Arwing): During the war the Arwing was a next generation fighter with increased shielding, ordinance, and range abilities. The Arwing was also the fighter of choice for the Star Fox Team on their mission to Venom. Assault Riffle (or gun): purely by definition, an Assault riffle is any riffle that takes ammunition more powerful then a pistol round, however is less powerful then a long range riffle round, Assault riffles typically have large magazines, and a high rate of fire (fully automatic is typical) civilians often refer to any military riffle as an assault weapon. (see also Cornerian arms manual #1) Battle ship: As the name implies these ships are meant for one thing, War, striped of almost all creature comforts these ships are predominantly built around their weapons systems providing the optimum in efficiently and power out put. Battle ships also have another distinguishing feature and that is they dont have large, or any fighter bays, typically only Five or so bombers can fit to one battle ship as apposed to a carrier which may house many wings of fighters and bombers. Beam weapons: Beam weapons use beams such as lasers to inflict damage rather then solid projectiles. (see also Cornerian arms manual #2) Blaster: A Blaster uses super charged hydrogen particles, magnetically aligned, and supplemented by energy on the 35mm wave length (micro waves), Blasters usually come in three forms, pistols, riffles, and cannons, also blasters typically are semi mechanical arms, Blasters typically come with stun settings as well, which is a low intensity shot which overloads the nervous system for a short time. Due to the nature on which blasters operate, they perform poorly on armor and other dense materials, however large ammunition stores with in the power packs make up for this. (see also Cornerian arms manual #2) Bombers: the largest of small personal craft, Usually armed with medium lasers and powerful engines bombers also hold gravity bombs, missiles, torpedoes, and some times multi role equipment. Once dropping their load, bombers typically join the fight as powerful, but rather large adversaries, or burn there fuel to get back to the carrier as fast as possible only to reload, refuel , and bomb again. Capital ship: The largest vessels in the Cornerian military gain the title of Capital ship Usually equipped with a full compliment of fighters, marines, ordinance, machine/fabrication and repair shops. these juggernauts are close to whole space stations, yet maintain mobility. Cell (power cells, power pack): portable sources of power, typically near self sustaining power based on hydrogen cold fusion, Cells are used most often in vehicles and weapons. Cerberus: CNX-001-0001 Cerberus was the last great battle ship of the Cornerian navy, being the largest ship of its size at the time, and armed with three G-class lasers as the primary armament made this ship a force to be reckoned with through out the galaxy, however before its final instatement into the Cornerian navy its funding was cut thanks to post cold war disarmament agreements, The Cerberus served as a border patrol and diplomatic transport for many years before being docked and displayed as a museum ship. (see also Cornerian history) Drum: Large cylindrical containers, typically used to hold fluids, such as chemicals or fuel. Drum magazines also share this name for their drum shape (see also Cornerian arms manual #1) Fighter: Typically a small single, or double seated craft capable of Air, and Space flight, acrobatic enough to engage other craft of equal or larger size, and armed with various weapon systems. Flare: simply a stick of bright burning agent, flares can also be projectiles (shot into the air typically as a visual cue, or something used to light an aria). Flares are also used in the context of defensive armament on fighters, flares are ejected and emit heat, and electronic noise to defeat or confuse an incoming missiles guidance system. G-Diffuser: A device installed into the Arwing that allowed the semi unstable air-frame to out preformed all fighters in its class, also it reduces felt Gs (Gravity Units) by the pilots. G-Class (Laser): Cornerian Lasers follow a letter designation system, With A starting at 2.7 gigawatts, and gaining a letter class every time that number doubles its self. Currently the highest power Laser is the G-class Galactic Center: The center of the known galaxy, this is the standard that all modern navigational charts are based on. (see also Cornerian society) G-Class (interceptor): A particularly light, but powerful interceptor seeming to be made of extremes. Built around powerful engine, reactor, and a C-class laser, yet its hull was the thinnest ever allowed by the Cornerian Air force. With a top speed of mach 5.56, and capability to break orbit when the engines were changed out with a space module this craft enjoyed a long service life as a long range, long ranged interceptor. Gravity bomb (conventional): A large explosive device that is designed to be dropped from a fighter or bomber, and instead of using propellant to bring its self to a target it simply uses gravity to fall to the target, gravity bombs Include guided, unguided, and multi function ordinance. (see also Cornerian arms manual #4) Gravity bomb (unconventional): Before Andross was exiled he crated a large explosive device that was able to some how create a singularity in time and space which acted like a black hole. He was able to use this to stage a surprise attack. Later experiments with the gravity singularity bomb (or GSB) as it dubbed by the Cornerian Military have shown that he must have had another component to make a stable jump point .. all singularities created since the first with copies of this weapon have resulted in extreme failures, -GSBs are strictly prohibited- (see also Cornerian history) Gun(s): A term for a ballistic weapon, using gas to propel a mass (typically a worlds heaviest, most dense material, or an explosive formed into something of mass) down a tube, usually riffled (small grooves or ridges that impart a spin on the bullet as it travels down the tube-barrel). Guns are still the best for penetrating armor, though the limited ammunition stores is hindering. Post war fighters are typically armed with at least one gun, as well as an assortment of other weapons. (see also Cornerian arms manual #1) Gunship: Something like a cross between a fighter and bomber gunships are just that, craft with power full, and or many guns, blasters, lasers and other direct line of sight weapons. Gunships typically escort troop carriers because they can stay on the site with out having to worry much about fighters while offering solid protecting of the transport, also Gunships are valuable planet side, offering low-level troop support. Grenade: A small explosive packed into a metallic husk. Typically grenades fragment when they explode causing serious injury to any on with in the blast radius. Some grenades are also non lethal using pyrotechnics or electronics cause confusion to the senses. Some grenades van be launched from small arms as well. (see also Cornerian arms manual #4) Heavy Fighter: A Class of fighter, not so much for there gorse weight, but rather their capability, A heavy fighter usually comes equipped with two high power engines, one large, and one small reactor typically placed at either end of the fighter, and an assortment of projectile, and energy weapons. Heavys: large utility craft capable of lifting massive amounts of weight, typically found in convoys. And primarily used by the corporate sector, though the military has contracted for a small force as well, using them as extra cargo transports for what ever cannot be fit into capital ships. Hyper Jump (or just Jump): A multi stage process, which includes instant acceleration, interring hyperspace, dropping from hyper space, and breaking. Technically the time spent in hyperspace is only a few billionths of a second, and accelerating and breaking take up the rest of the process. There are two kinds of hyper jump Active and Passive, Active hyper jumps rely on an internal jump engine, these are also known as artificial jumps the second kind of jump uses a gravity singularity (black hole) as the catalyst for a jump, this is the preferred method of jump because its much less taxing on the ship, and allows for the ship to hold its power allocation, in other words allowing for combat jumps (see also Cornerian history) Hyperspace: A state of space in which virtually nothing is known about, it is theorized that hyper space is devoid most of the rules of physics, and that any thing breaking the rules of physics in known space travels to hyperspace verses causing irreparable damage to known space. (see also Cornerian history) Iron sight: Although not actually made of iron any more, Iron sights (Also known as open sights) are basically three points, one in front two in the rear used to align any projectile or energy based weapon. Iron sights are considered last resort tools now a days, however many still prefer them because of their reliability and durability. Laser: A highly focused beam of light that can be used to cut or heat materials. Lasers suffer lack luster performance against modern high temperature alloys. (see also Cornerian arms manual #2) Magazine: A magazine is storage space for projectile-based ammunition by definition. However it is almost always associated with small arms, the magazine comes in many forms such as, fixed box, and fixed tubular, removable box, and removable drum. Tubular magazines are simply tubes under the barrel or else where that stack the ammunition in single file length wise, and use a spring to feed ammunition into the gun, tubular magazines are typically found on shot guns. Box type magazines are box like in shape and stack the ammunition one on top of each other, while using a spring to feed it up into the gun, removable box magazines are the most popular in modern small arms designee. Drum magazines are based on a center spindle, and wrap bullets around it, this spindle is usually spring operated. Drum magazines are typically very high capacity, but more prone to jamming. (see also Cornerian arms manual #2) Power Armor: A mechanized frame covered in either partial, or total armor plate. Power armor is typically used to load ordinance or freight onto ships, and is also used on the battlefield after being equipped with plate and weapons. (see also Cornerian Armor manual) Ration: Military term for portioning food for a daily allowance of calories based on activity and food stores. Troops are typically given ration packs (one complete, or semi complete meal in a package, usually ready to eat from the pack) before an exercise or operation, though supply drops can be made in most cases. Sabot: A round held in place by a plastic shim that is used to impart a spin on a solid bullet, typically used in smooth bore weapons, such as a shotgun. (see also Cornerian arms manual #1) Shot: steel, lead, or other materials formed into balls that are packed into a shell with a propellant. Shot is designed to fan out in a spread rather then being a precision weapon, obviously shot would be used for small moving targets. (see also Cornerian arms manual #1) Shot gun: A gun used to fire shot, typically smooth bored. (see also Cornerian arms manual #1) Waypoint: An imaginary point to take the place of a real landmark used to guide and coordinate troop and ship movements. |
