| The Answer: |
It is true; the word "Purgatory" is never mentioned in the Bible. However, this does not mean there is no Biblical backing to the doctrine. After all, the word "Trinity" is not found either, yet it is still a steadfast belief for Catholics and Protestants alike. Like the word "Trinity," Purgatory is implied in Scripture.
"...nothing unclean will enter it..." Revelation 21:27
"In it he also went to preach to the spirits in prison" 1 Pet 3:19
"He will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire" 1 Cor 3:15
"In doing this he acted in a very excellent and noble way, inasmuch as he had the resurrection of the dead in view; for if he were not expecting the dead to rise again, it would have been useless and foolish to pray for them in death. But if he did this with a view to the splendid reward that awaits those who had gone to rest in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought. Thus he made atonement for the dead that they might be freed from this sin" 2 Macc 43-45 |
