Spring/Summer 2007

Greetings to all,

Since last update I have been dating Ann Marie which I met at Wal*Mart while working over night.  She now works day shift in the Bakery department making donuts and packing up all the pasties. Christmas time I met her mother and brothers and their families.   In February we took a trip down to her father's place for a weekend.  Then in June I replaced my car with 2001 Chevy Impala because it would not pass inspection.  I brought Ann Marie to my parents place for our Family reunion at the end of June showing her the area in Ohio.

Looking at my last entry I sent in, I do not have much to write about since then.  I returned to my same apartment I had before I left, still have the same car with a new main computer, but had to get a new phone number.  I am at the same position at Wal-Mart after some opportunities that were challenging and changes that they are still going through.

Greetings from MS,

I traveled from Iraq to Kuwait on Thursday, June 8 on a C-130.  Then I had to wait in Kuwait until Sunday June 11 to start my travels to the states.  We had stops in Ireland and Maine for fuel, catering and change of staff before heading to MS.  I am presently waiting to out process and hoping to be in PA Sunday June 18.  There is a total about 2000 soldiers on base and the out processing center can only do 300 soldiers at a time.  I enjoyed my time in Iraq because I got the privilege to travel to other bases.  The rest of my unit was providing security for the air base on towers or entrance points.  Also our unit had patrols outside the wire, we did convoys to nearby towns, and controlled the ranges to practice our skills.  The base was run by Marines, and we replaced and got replaced by Marines.  I got the chance to work with other army units, Marines, Navy and a few Air Force people.  At times it seemed like everybody wanted Catholic coverage at the same time, so it was a power struggle between the Navy.  We saw more Marines in our travels than any other branch and since Marines do not have doctors or chaplains, the Navy helps them out.

Greetings from Iraq,

I think on the last newsletter I was in MS waiting to be shipped overseas.  First I went to Kuwait for three weeks to get accustomed to the climate.  While others got the opportunity to drive or ride in vehicles some of us were chosen to fly into the country.  Our unit is pulling security on an air base, running offices, and doing patrols.  While marines are doing missions, other army units is going on convoys with civilian trucks and acting like a mayor cell for the base.  I get to see a lot of different uniforms with all the different branches of service, contractors and other countries military forces.  I get to travel by helicopter to other bases to help provide catholic coverage with the priest and get to see the countryside more than other people do.  Believe or not they do have some good landscaping in spots with trees, grass, and bodies of water. We just had one of our local news broadcast send a crew to interview us and get holiday greetings.  I did not get in front of the camera but they did tape our outside mass. A couple months back we also had local newspaper reporters visit our area and bring back reports to the communities.

Greetings one and all,

My life has changed since I last wrote.  I am now in Mississippi training up to go over seas.  I was notified December 21 that I was possible being deployed to Iraq.  I am attached to 1-109 or 2nd brigade combat team pulling from several states for a tour of year in country.  In January I took three weeks of vacation from WalMart to get myself ready and relax.  Some those days were spent with family in OH and other days to get the paper work rolling for me to leave for 18 months.  The rest of time was spent tying up loose ends, cleaning out the apartment and spending some time with friends.  I was planning to leave with the others but I got held up by one piece of paper that was missing to February 12.  I joined up with my unit in Camp Shelby and got caught up on my training and duties rather quickly.

As the end of April I am done with training at Camp Shelby and headed off to Fort Irwin, CA in May to get more experience before going overseas.

Then in late June or early part of July, I get on the plane headed to a different country.

Fall/Winter 2004

Happy Holidays,

In March I went away for two weeks to Chaplin assistant school in North Carolina. With this schooling, I had the chance to be promoted to sergeant in the PA National Guard. Along with this promotion I switched to a unit that is currently deployed overseas. A sergeant that was over in Bosnia when I was in Germany, that also works at WalMart with me, is getting activated again for a eighteen month tour beginning the first of the year. I was asked to volunteer for the same mission and would be willing if needed, but I refused to volunteer myself.

I had the privilege to entertain my parents on Labor Day weekend for little more than a day. While here they got the chance to see the apartment I have and also the family I stayed with after getting back from Germany. I got two home cooked meals and had the chance to go grocery shopping for the ingredients before they came. I returned the favor when I returned home to take care of my mother when she was recouping from surgery.
