surviving high school

by: krizel malabanan

It is already my third year in high school. I am not the "can’t help but wonder" type of student anymore when it comes to various organizations, activities or facilities of UST High School. I have already familiarized myself with the school’s regulations, teachers, etc. Whenever I walk through the corridors of the lower year levels, I was often reminded of how I looked like one or two years ago. With the tons of responsibilities given to us by now, I still try to make the most out of my high school life, all in complete moderation- including the parties, "lakwatsas", etc.

Many people have described their high school life as the best part of their education. It is an another step in the social ladder we are climbing, wherein we do not only meet different kinds of people, but also absorb as much knowledge as we can. Others consider it as the "coming- of- age" rites. After all, it is only one step away from the college level. Let us look back and see steps on how to survive HIGH SCHOOL LIFE…

Intimidating First Year

Things you should never forget:
Bring your own T- Square or else do not attend your T.H.E. classes.
Always read your Earth Science Book or else you won’t survive your pre- tests.

What you will see on your first day:
Upper classmen loitering through the halls as if they were owning them (But most of them will prove you that they are not monsters…)

What to do:
Do not let your grades fail just because you are "adjusting."
Earn as many friends as you can…

Breezy Second Year

First thing you would do (Enrollment Time):
Know your section and your classmates. (Most students look at St. Bartholomew’s section first and see who made it to the cream- of the- crop.)

Prepare yourself for:
Biology (memorize everything…)
Dissection (that’s it…)
A well presented skeleton of the leaf (Good Luck!)
The competition in getting the gumamela in front of the UST Hospital
In short, BIO BIO BIO!!!!!

What to Do:
Before the school year ends, join clubs that interest you. Do not join the club just for the heck of it. Get involved in something you can willingly devote time to.

Third Year: the Hard Part

Introduction to subjects like:
Chemistry (Do not forget your calculators.)
Geometry (Know how to define the term and how to draw a conclusion out of the definition.)
World History (Know the capitals or let your recitation suffer!)
Filipino (Believe it or not, even this will scare you. Read your Noli me Tangere in advance or else….)

What to Do: Prepare yourself in going home late. This is the time when you are already involved on exhibits and different activities.
Third year is also when all the fuss about college usually starts. If you are planning to study abroad, start visiting foreign college websites. Find out from the admissions offices how foreign students can enroll or how to avail of scholarships.
You might want to enroll in review classes during summer to help you pass the universities’ entrance exams. An alternative to review classes is to organize a study group with your friends. You get almost the same kind of assistance much more cheaply. Just borrow used review books and manuals.
Spend the summer reflecting on what you like to study in college. It helps to start as early as possible. You can discuss your plans with your parents while making them understand that, in the end, you alone will make the decision. You can also consult your guidance counselor before the school year ends.

Fourth year: Time to Leave (huhu…)

(Since I am still on my third year, I have to consult my sister in this part… Thanks to my sister!)

Prepare yourself for:
Economics (GNP computations, assignments written on a yellow pad…)
Math (Trigonometry)
Physics (still formulas… which concludes that you should never forget your calculator….)
Filipino (El Filibusterismo, read in advance)
Your high-school life probably starts flashing before your eyes, and you start reminiscing. But before you start daydreaming, there's still the matter of getting into college, ideally, the one of your choice.

What to Do:
Remember to submit all requirements. Incomplete forms are not processed sometimes. Most colleges will let you know if you lack certain requirements, though.
After taking the entrance test, you can wait for the results and the acceptance letter/s. That's when you make the final decision about where to enroll. Take everything into consideration -- the environment and location, academic standards, cost, etc. Keep in mind that one university cannot have everything you want. Do not choose the "best" university but rather what is best for you.
Remember, too, that even as you try to make decisions about college, you have to make sure you do well in fourth year or you may not graduate at all.

These are only some of the guidelines I decided to share you. Being an incoming senior, I am confident these will be useful. You may discover other ways as well. Just be sure that they are legal or else, you will be graduating earlier than you expected.
Surviving high school is never easy. It takes a lot of determination and focus. This is the period of self-discovery and the likes. What are you waiting for? Don’t waste your time. Make the most of your high school life.

power of mind

by: mavee soriano

This is not a sort of telepathy or anything related to that. This article will help you people, especially the teenagers out there to achieve your goals as easy as you can imagine. This will also help those who are having a hard time following their New Year’s resolution. So read along to know the four easy steps on how to fulfill your dreams in a flash.

1. Write all your resolutions in the present tense. Your mind always works in the present, not in the past or in the future. So instead of saying, “I will be kind to everyone…” say “I am kind to everyone”.

2. Imagine. Your mind thinks in images. If you want to achieve those resolutions as early as possible, have a clear picture of your dream in your mind. Imagine that your behavior makes you gain more friends and being the closest to them all. Before knowing it, you’re already popular inside your campus.

3. Read your resolutions aloud three times a day. Have you noticed that when you’re studying, your mind remembers anything you recite repeatedly? Therefore, saying your resolutions over and over again will help you include it in your memory.

4. Go for it! Once you have convinced your mind that you’re well- behaved, you will suddenly observe yourself being one. Your mind will make it easier for you to achieve your goals and dreams. It will also give you what you need to fulfill those dreams.

Therefore, there’s no reason for you to just sit back there. Start accomplishing your aims and goals this very minute.

love detective

by: kristine coretico

Is he crushing on you?
These tips won’t leave you clueless and play love detective.

There are so many help-books you can find in any bookstores, but then love is not that easy . It doesn’t come from easy-to-read manuals. How can you tell if the cute guy in class has feelings for you? Of course, he would be rude not to approach me, so either just wait for him or simply assume that the guy is into you. So here are some tips that I have just researched just for you girls out there to catch the things guys have for you. Always remember that there are different kinds of guy and each has his own ways of showing their emotions or feelings. Don’t just rely on those self-help books, go with your instincts!

•A change in attitude may mean a change on how he sees you. If he is the noisy type of bud before, his lips will suddenly become tighter than a clam’s shell. If he never used to tease you, then be surprised that he will be your Mr. Stand-up Comedian and use you as his subject. And, if he used to aloof you, then prepare to be the center of his universe. (kilig to the max!)

•You just had a gimmick with your friends and suddenly he insists to become your driver and volunteers to take you home even though he lives outside Metro Manila and you at España, Manila. Now the question is how on earth a lazy and self-centered guy would think about that?

•Be surprised that he suddenly turned into Cristy Fermin. He suddenly talks to you about everything that happens to him every single day. You score high in his love scale if he starts opening up to you. It’s just that he wants to be comfortable with you first. And this definitely would be a signal that he wants to get closer to you.

•Usually guys never notice a girl who just had a little change in her appearance. Nevertheless, if a girl suddenly trimmed her hair or put on bangs, this teeny tiny change can get his attention and tells you it looks perfect on you. This means that his eyes are on you and you are the apple of his eyes.

•He suddenly hangs out with your friends and starts to crack jokes. That makes your girlfriends like him and be a great help in getting closer to you.

•Stolen glances are sure signs that he is really interested on you. When you are busy over something, he sometimes takes a glance on you. Then, when you feel that he is looking at you and it grabs your attention, he quickly and guiltily takes his gaze into some other place. Wow, that really is touching!

•Well, text messages may be the easiest way to express his feelings and besides, there are already phone loads now that you can afford at a cheaper price. Romantic messages and quotes that he never usually do. Great textpectations: Think he wants to send a message that he likes you? Ü

•Maybe, the best thing a guy must do is to be brave enough to tell his feelings on you. That may really help you a lot not to make guesses anymore if he has the thing for you. It’s either he’ll just give hints about it… or just comes out and says it. The final decision is on you whether you’ll date him or ditch him.

dating do's and dont's

by: annalita ascue

For Men and Women

1. Be sincere, warm, and friendly. You get back what you give out, so being closed and cool gets the same back.
2. Be confident ... but not arrogant.
3. Don't talk about your ex on the first date. If you must - keep it positive. OK, so maybe your ex did take you for every penny you had ... and break your heart - but now is not the time to discuss it.
4. Remember your manners. First impressions count. Don't drink too much and eat at a moderate pace.
5. Smile! Often!
6. Be prepared. Always have some conversation topics prepared in case of awkward silences.
7. Go on every new date with a positive attitude. If you continue to judge people based on past relationships - that's how any new relationship will turn out.
8. Let your date know that you're having a good time. Show them you're enjoying their company.
9. Have fun! Have a sense of humour. Laugh.
10. Be open-minded if they're not your ''type''. If you're enjoying being with the person - stick with it. Don't dismiss someone because they don't fit your pre-conceived image.
11. Don't dominate the conversation. Listen, keep an eye contact. Let the conversation flow. Strike a harmonious balance.
12. Don't talk about your health problems. It'll make you appear older - and a complainer.
13. Be available. Trying to impress your date with your busy schedule may make them feel you won't have time for them. But don't be too needy either.
14. Don't judge your date on the basis of one meeting. Get to know them over at least 3 dates before making any decisions as to whether to carry on seeing each other.

For Men

1. Make her laugh.
2. Compliment a woman on her appearance.
3. Plan the date a few days in advance rather than last minute - see How to Plan the Perfect Date
4. Listen to her when she speaks. Show you're listening and you're interested. Nothing is worse for a woman than a self-important bore, who's only interested in himself.
5. Look her in the eyes when you're both talking. For a fascinating book with brilliant tips on how to use your eyes to draw
people in, get a copy of "How To Talk To Anyone" by Leil Lowndes
6. Be realistic - be prepared to be disappointed if your expectations are too high.
7. Make an effort with your appearance. Dress appropriately for what you're doing - but avoid jeans, T-shirt and trainers if you want to make a good impression.
8. Be interested. Ask her questions about herself. It gives you a chance to find out more about her and she'll be impressed
that you care.
9. Sweep her off her feet - be charming, be a gentleman.
10. Clean nails are absolutely vital.
11. Be kind and sensitive, but confident and assured.
12. Be interesting. Read the newspaper or watch the news, so you'll sound as if you know what's happening in the world.
13. Don't lie or pretend to be someone you're not to impress her.
14. Don't look for a fight. Debate topics don't argue them. Don't embarrass her in public.
15. Don't ask her to pay for her half. It's really tacky. If she offers - decline - unless she really insists.
16. Don't kiss and tell!

For Women

1. Make an effort with your appearance. Try a bit of glamour.
2. Laugh at his jokes.
3. Don't fire questions at your date like an interrogator. While it maybe that you're genuinely interested in him, he'll feel that he's being interviewed for a job!
4. Ooze confidence - men find it attractive.
5. Let him know that you like him ... a bit. But let him do the chasing.
6. Be on time. However, if he's late, don't have a go at him. Let it go and enjoy the evening.
7. Wear something that makes you feel attractive ... and comfortable.
8. Be interesting. Read the newspaper or watch the news, so you'll sound as if you know what's happening in the world.
9. Be busy. Having your own interests makes you more interesting.
10. Be warm, relaxed ... and smile. Be approachable.
11. Call him and tell him a joke you've just heard or a news item about one of his sporting heroes. It will encourage him to think of you when he wants to share his news with someone.
12. Show him you trust him.
13. Show him you appreciate his efforts.
14. Only offer to pay on the date if you feel comfortable doing so. However, don't insist if he declines your offer. Another way to give him something back is to cook dinner for him.
15. If he does pay, don't feel it means you owe him in any way.
16. If you want to see him again let him know. Many men won't make a move unless they feel confident you won't reject them.
17. If he asks to see you again ... and you're not interested. Reject him kindly.
18. Above all - be safe
