South Bend and Notre Dame - 2007
In December 2007 we went to South Bend IN to attend the wedding of one of my cousins.  It was going to be at the Sacred Heart Basilica on the campus of Notre Dame University (he was an alumnus).  Flying ws too expensive, and the weather was not the best, so we opted for AMTRAK.  We got there a bit late, but after resting and showering, we were ready to join the other guests.  The rehearsal dinner was at the College Football Hall of Fame, and I got to see several exhibits on the sport, including a whole room dedicated to Army football.  The room where we actually ate had paintings of all of the Heisman Trophy recipients.  The next day was busy, as we took a tour of the campus.  That brought back memories for me, since I had been there in 1973.  We got to see the administration building, the Sacred Heart Basilica (where the wedding would be), the dorms, the Hesburgh Library (with the Touchdown Jesus), and the football stadium.  In the late afternoon was the actual wedding, and it was quite an impressive ceremony.  After that we went to the reception at the Palais Royale, in downtown South Bend.  It's an historical building, and quite nice on the inside.  The next day was Sunday and I walked to church in a sleet storm, but managed to get there and back in one piece.  Sicne we did not have our car, we were not able to visit the Studebaker Museum, or check out the Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad.  Maybe next time.  We took AMTRAK back home and were on schedule this time.  We all had a good time and hope to return in the near future.
