Rio Part II
17th-20th June (Mon-Thurs): The cheap labour here continues to astound me. I guess that the government is trapped between introducing machinery to bring efficiency and putting 50 million doormen, service station attendants and the guys who put the mosaic footpaths together out of work. An icecream salesman will follow you 200m across the beach to collect his 80c. I tracked down the best of the 5 surf schools here and had my first lesson on Tuesday. I said to myself that the lesson would be a success if I didnīt throw my shoulder out since the volleyball game on Sunday. It wasnīt a success. It was a lot of fun, jumping off the seafloor and catching wash, turning the 7ī8" board in pleasant conditions and with great commentary from the coach. I visited my first of the mega supermarkets here and after this I am definately not driving - there are no shopping baskets and the trolley-rage is obscene - rammed by middle aged snobby women in the vege section. The supermarket has coffee stands (free) as well as cafes; donīt leave your trolley or youīll never find it again! The fruit and veges are diffent to Australia - they look bad but taste great! How different cultures evolve huh. I joined a gym for the dance and yoga classes for a month - check out the website if its working. I looked at a few and they are amazing - I am now typing from the free internet station. They also have climbing walls, hot spas, dance studios, keys for the machines which tailor your workout, medical examinations etc etc. I am finding out that the Brasilian generosity may not be all that it is cracked up to be.. I had a night of beers bought for me by the owner of the Pousada Fabio and his wife Ana where he offered to take me to the football the following night (cancelled) and the use of his bicycle (used 50% of the time by his son!). He did insist on paying for the night though.. I will find out this weekend when I go to Teresopolis to climb the 5th tallest peak in Brasil with 3 guys from the Pousada.. stay tuned. I bought a bike yesterday to prevent conflict - itīs great to be mobile again, but I will be sticking to footpaths and the beach cycle track as much as possible!!
