Rio de Janeiro
20th May: Finding that the tourist terriers had left the building by 6 am, I jumped on the excellent airconditioned bus for Cocacabana and a view of the city at dawn - beautiful. This was not the first time that I was surprised that things were about 25% cheaper than quoted in the guide books! I also had my first experience with Carioca (people from Rio) bus drivers. They all drive in memory of Ayrton Senna. Revving the engine is deemed an acceptable substitute for the horn, corners to be taken at top speed and lane markings to be ignored. Lucky most streets are one way. Its fast, furious and seems to work. I was dropped off close to the hostel I selected in my guide to find that it was definately the one undergoing rennovations. No mistake. I asked the bombeiros (firemen - more posey than ours Davo) for directions to the next hostel and, relying on the good security that I had felt so far, I wandered through one of the many tunnels linking the suberbs of Rio, finding nothing insalubrious except for a couple of beggar kids. The directions were good and I soon had my first, long shower for many days. The rooms are for up to 8 people (bunks in 2 rooms) with a kitchen, sheets and toilet for AUD$17.. unfortunately the hot shower function is cactused in our room, but most nights you donīt want heat anyway. Meeting up with Thomas, a Canadian who spoke good Spanish and ok Portuguese, we headed down to Cocacabana for some sun.. magic weather. The shops we past on the 6 block walk from the city were confusing, mixing pharmacuticals (lots of these shops) with shoes, clothes with food etc. Dropping off our valuables, Tom and I took a bus down to Barra de Tijuca which is almost outside the city to the south for some quality beach time. As well as beautiful people, they had some surf schools which will be investigated later.. The water is warm and there is, surprisingly, space to surf the beach breaks. The days develop a pattern: Up at 10, jobs until 13:00, beach until 16:00, Portuguese study to 18:00, sleep, eat and party.. although this night I simply ate, studied and slept..
