Greater Brasil - Mineas Gerais
29th - 1st Aug: Rising early to sample the fruits of the cafe/bar next door I was interested to note the sale of individual cigarettes over the counter (complete with lighter on a chain) to guys who obviously believe they are quitting. One way streets make even the busses go around a suburban block to make a turn from the right direction. The "per kilo" restaurant in the Bus Station has free Cachasa (rum) as well as short black coffees... sheesh, what a combination. Smelling the cachaca reminded me how obvious the idea was here to use alcohol to power their cars.. The bus deeper into the state of Minais Gerais (Mines General) passes through denuded hills which make the value of the pockets of virgin forest all the more precious. We pass at least two accidents on the 5 hour drive and gum trees reminiscent of Oz. I have an hour in Bela Horizonte, the capital of the state with a population of 2 million and note with delight that prices are half what they are in Rio. I meet Paulo in a cafe/bar who buys me a vitaminas (his blend of fruit juices - great) and shows me the delights of the city.. nice guy, and I get back to the station with 7 mins to catch the bus on to Ouro Preto... apparently too late. I find a youth hostel and head out - it is difficult to stay alone, people are so friendly. Iīm so impressed with the activity in Savassi on a Tuesday night that I decide to stay another! Wednesday becomes a wonderful unplanned day in BH, so I make my way to the municipal park to do some painting.. but donīt stay long when I see the park wardens walking past with baseball bats! I find another park, but the knees are feeling somewhat shell-shocked after the mountain climbing.. no more beach volleyball for me! I finally leave Bela Horizonte on Thurs morning - it is an oasis of colour and people amidst barren hills without a beach.
