Boys Fall Booster Club Minutes

Submitted by Sherrill Fleming 10/28/05

The meeting was called to order by Tom Daniel, the outgoing president. Tom introduced the current executive:

  • Vice President (President Elect) - Stephen Foster
  • Secretary - Sherrill Fleming
  • Treasurer - Ann Spurlock

Tom also presented the current fund raisers that have been set up by the executive.

Fund Raisers

Smoked Turkey Breast Sale

Currently ongoing. All players should have received 10 tickets from Ann Spurlock. Ticket stubs and money must be turned in by next Wednesday. On Thursday November 10 the turkey breast will be available for pick up just outside the SHS cafeteria from 5-7 p.m. Players must check at 7 p.m. to pick up any turkey breasts that have not been picked up. Drawings for the prizes will be made at the pick up time.

Players that sell all 10 tickets will not have to pay extra for their team windsuit. The windsuits cost $65. Ann Spurlock will collect a check from each new player for the cost of the windsuit. After the turkey sale tickets are returned and the difference is calculated, Ann will return your check and you may write a new check for the balance. If you do not wish to sell any tickets and purchase your windsuit out right that is fine. The booster club does get some money as well for the sale of the turkey breasts.

Applebee's Pancake Breakfast - December 17

Tickets are $5 each and will be distributed after Thanksgiving. We are limited to 225 tickets total. The boys will do the serving and clean up. A couple of parents will be needed for set up before the start of the breakfast.

Dessert/Appetizer Cards - TBA

A $5 card which will enable the purchaser to receive a free dessert or appetizer with a minimum purchase at several popular restaurants around town for 2006. Probably will sell in January.

Other Fundraisers - All Ideas Welcome!!

The meeting was turned over to the new president, Stephen Foster. Stephen discussed the first item for business would be to elect a new vice president. No volunteers came forward at this time. It was pointed out that the entire executive have players that are now seniors and would be leaving the booster club after this year (although Stephen and Sherrill would still be around). We need to get parents of younger players involved and ready to take over these jobs. Sign up sheets were passed around for jobs:

  • Media contacts - handing in game reports to local newspapers and phoning TV stations.
  • Pictures/Video tapes - We need people willing to take pictures for newspapers, etc. and to videotape games - very important for training of the soccer team
  • Audio People - people willing to set up loudspeaker and man the booth at the top of the stands for home games (a warm place to be!!)
  • Concession Stand - a coordinator to organize the stand and volunteers to man it. Boy's parents have always worked the girl's game (5-7 p.m.) and girl's parents work the boy's game.
  • Travel Food - coordinator to organize volunteer list of people responsible for getting food for trips home on away games. The booster club pays for the food. The volunteer makes sure it is ordered, delivered or picked up after consultation with the coach.

Uses of Fundraising Money

  • Windsuits.
  • Letter jacket letters - if enough money, assistance with letter jackets.
  • Meals, snacks and drinks for away games
  • Sideline heaters and tent - Heaters run about $200 but we would need a generator for away games.
  • Memorial for Tom Lindsay - looking into a plaque or brick in the walkway at the stadium.
  • Needs that arise during season - ie- grass seed, supplies, etc.

Also discussed

Individuals are encouraged to donate to the Tom Lindsay Fund that SYSO has set up. It is best to mail checks to SYSO, Box 4946, Mississippi State, Mississippi 39762. A board has been set up and money will be used to cover soccer expenses for Laura Kathryn and Michael, a memorial at the Sportsplex for Tom and any other uses that the board decides are appropriate as money is available.

The team is looking into getting black armbands for the players if it is allowed as a part of their uniform.

Schedules - Practices and Games

Check out the web page www.shs-soccer.org for up to date information. Directions to away games will be posted in the future. The first game will be against Amory Nov 8 at the Starkville SPORTSPLEX as football will still be playing.

All SYSO players may get into the high school games for free except for play off games.

Sweatshirt/T shirt designs and Orders

There will be an opportunity to order stocking caps, headbands, T shirts, etc in the next few weeks. The logo is going to be redesigned. Please watch for it.

Also, Tom Daniel works for University Screen Printing and can order some things through the Lodge. Right now he can get Adidas Predator Cleats regularly $90 for $59. He can also get Adidas shorts at a reduced price.

If you missed the meeting and want to volunteer please let myself or Stephen Foster know. We really, really need a new Vice President as soon as possible. Don't wait for us to hunt you down...Step up and volunteer!
