Tips to Avoid Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the use of someone's, words, thoughts or ideas without giving them credit for it.

1) Include all sources consulted in your Works Cited section of your paper.
2) Refer all information that is not your own to the Works Cited section of paper using Parenthetical Citation.
3) Place any combination or 4 or more words that taken directly form someone else inside quotes and then use parenthetical citation to refer to your Works Cited section of your paper.
4) Take notes in your own words!!! DO NOT simply copy their exact words for your notes or else you will simply type their words into your papers!

3 Steps to Properly Document Your Paper

Whenever you use someone else's words, thoughts or ideas in your paper you should do the following:

1) Cite your source.

2) Place quotes around any passages where you use more than 4 or 5 words that are the same as your source.

3) List your source in the Bibliography (Works Cited).

Follow these 3 steps according to the format I have provided for you. This can also be found in your Writers, Inc. textbooks used by your English teachers.

If you are ever in doubt:

1) Cite! Cite! Cite!

2) Ask ME!

3) Ask yourself, have you explained in your paper what words (Quote & Cite) are the author's and what ideas (Cite) are the author's?
