May 30: On the Road Again

Lincoln, Nebraska, 467 miles, 2.8 miles, 2 state Capitols and 9 caches.

Gas was $2.65 in Peoria as we left. We started at 8:00. I'm going to freeze to death in this global warming stuff.

NoKo is acting up... while 0bama is out campaigning.

We got to Iowa about 9:30. We stopped at a rest stop and looked for our first Iowa cache (this time). Is that poison ivy? Guess I'll find out.

I took the next leg. The truckers in Iowa drive like maniacs. They pass little cars like they're in some sort of race, and in the rain, and with the (lots of) road work, it was scary.

In Des Moines, of course, we went to the Capitol. Wow, how beautiful. They have a gold dome and are a lot bigger than ours. When we went in we were told we could take a tour and go up in the dome. Tempting, but we didn't have time. However, on our own we caught up with the tour and were invited on up. It's like going into castles in England, round and round and round and round.... Nice view.

Afterwards, outside, we talked to one of the guards. He's really proud of his Capitol. They have a part-time legislature. I am so jealous.

That's right, Pile of Dung Harkin is from here. The other Senator is sensible, though. There's John Wayne's birthplace, the Covered bridges of Madison County, and Elkhorn where there's the The Danish Immigrant Museum. They are having a celebration of Victor Borge. I want to come back to Iowa and do a more thorough job with the state.

Onward. Into Nebraska and past the Holy Family Shrine. My initial plan was to go to Omaha, but I looked again and decided we could get to Lincoln, as long as we had a reservation. Not only did we get there in daylight, we had time to drive by the Very Tall Capitol and find a cache nearby. Then we had a bit of a problem finding the motel, but eventually got there. Then we ate at Perkins which had the advantage of being easy to find.
