June 8: Another Letter to GoE

My dear friend:
It's been three years since the last time I saw you alive. I still miss you and think of you every day, but the agony is gone.

Your house has been sold again (and for $100K more, too!) I guess the plans to keep it through the daughter's college years fell through, but they made a tidy profit. There are a lot of changes going on in Davis... we were at the "groundbreaking" for the new DMTC building, for instance (the walls had just been put up that day!) Steve doesn't remember our names, but he remembers that we're Sunday afternoon people. Your seat with your name will be center front. Your dad had told me to get two, but I didn't understand, so there's only one.

They're building a junior high school on the former cornfield at the curve in the road. You'd hate that! The bike bridge over the freeway is nice, though. And the other thing is that the nice use of the unused back of the cemetery as a dog park has been stopped. That's too bad. I thought it was a good use for otherwise fallow land.

We went to one cache the last time we were in Reno, up the side of a hill with a beautiful view. There's massive roadwork going on in Reno.

Everytime I see news about the Heinlein estate, or B5 (there's an exhibit somewhere now) or a new skiffy series, I think of you. Richard Biggs (Dr. Franklin on B5) died. Then there's the time we were on "Shumway Drive." And, of course, we went to Area 51. There was a shirt with a flying saucer morphing into a Volkswagen. I sure would have bought that one for you!

I called your Dad. He's having house repair problems. In fact, he's making good use of your money (though there's plenty in trust for the kid). Otherwise he seems in good health and fairly good spirits. He's had cataract surgery as well as having some skin cancers reamed out of his nose, and is spry.

Politics continues to be a consuming interest. Your OTHER senator, the sensible one, the non-Reid, doesn't want to give the UN money. Then Reagan died earlier this week, and you should hear all the media (who were so backstabbing during the 80s) and their glowing praise. You'd have fun pulling Kerry and Insane Algore apart, as well as W. when he strays from the path.

Bernadette is having a bad case of writers/artist's block with Dex. She needs to move them to Denver, and while I can see how she can get Dex and maybe Junior there, it'd be harder to move Phil.

Today I got a Voice From the Past! My boyfriend of grades 4-6 found me and wrote. I guess I didn't say anything too awful. It turns out he lives in the South Bay area, so we'll be visiting him in a couple of weeks. Back when we were in 2nd grade, he would pull my braids, and my Mom said it was probably because he liked me. Then there was that oh-so-romantic time at camp, when he thrilled me by saying, "Hey, Hawes, I'll take you to the dance!" Heh.

I miss you, as you doubtless know from all the times I talk to you. It's been an interesting, but long, three years.

Loveya, Jan
