Kanab, Utah

The first thing we did was to look for the cache Elmo's Lookout... we'd discovered the other night that the only approach was via the south. This was #1100, AND I got a travel bug, too!

Then we headed off across the Reservation. We saw their version of the Sheriff's Crew cleaning the roads... with BIA police. Then we got to the Four Corners monument. The Indians ask $3 a person to see this. It's nice, and you can stand in 4 states at once, but Rich was on a mission and I hadn't written the directions for the cache down clearly enough. We tried to figure it out, but eventually decided not to strike out across country in Indian territory. Back at home, I read up on another cache, a virtual, at the monument, and it also says physical caches are a bad idea. Oh, well. We were disappointed at first, but since I can count the virtual, it's not so bad.

The wildflowers are gorgeous. They're red, yellow, white, and bluish-purple. Stunning!

We got to Page, and had lunch across the street from the Arizona Visitor's Center. Then we went to the Glen Canyon Dam. First I took my knife out of my pack, then realized I couldn't take my pack so I left it in the car... at the metal detector I gave over my keys and camera and had a quick discussion of the camera bag, and still I set off the beeper... it was my pedometer! Geeze.

It's a nice center, though. Since we've done dam tours, we didn't do that. My favorite thing was the big topo model of the Colorado River... you can see how it leaves Lake Powell and heads toward the Canyon. I tried to describe how a river is captured, stops flowing northwest and starts going southeast. Also at the Visitor's Center, dinosaur tracks!

Then we went to the overlook. The rocks and the water are SO lovely. I spied a lizard on the way down, and told Rich about it. Then on the way back up, there it was again. Apparently these lizards make sure you spy their tails, and aren't too worried about using speed to escape predators.

We drove along the Vermillion Cliffs. I should have just recorded myself, because all I could say was "Oh, my. It's so BEAUTIFUL!" over and over again. We said our final goodbye to Arizona at 4:00, 2905 miles into the trip.

I'd been worried about the reservation in Kanab, and for good reason, the maid took it on the phone. I told the woman my confirmation number and the rate, and there was room, but it was a near thing. There's a wedding party or something at this motel. I probably should have planned to go on to St. George anyway, but I wasn't sure how long all the Reservation driving would take.

We did the three virtual history caches in town, and then checked out the film town. Kanab has been the site for a LOT of Westerns. They think of themselves as Little Hollywood. The motel owner has lots of pictures of lots of stars, many of them actually autographed. We got a Where's George bill in change at the gas station. The sidewalks were rolled up early so we watched TV.
