........This specimens are from Natural Science Museum collection. The lack of literature and material for comparations made the curator of the collection to appeal to the word wide web for help. This way we hope that a larger number of specialists can see the specimens and send opinions to us via e-mail. ........At request we can e-mail much more detailed photos of the specimens, photos with a resolution larger than 1500 dpi. ........As far as the origin and the age of the specimens is concerned you can find detailes on Stratigraphy page. The real place from where the teeth come is not known exactly. Because the pieces have more than 100 years old since their discovery, the outcrop is no longer known. The lanscape has changed, the hills are now affected by superficial land slides and a few gipsy "houses" appeared in the area, of course without authorization for construction. ........Nowadays, due to massive brushes and tree cuts the erosion becomes more and more active and some new outcrops begin to appear. All the specimens pictured on the Gallery page are from those new outcrops. Only one of the old outcrops survives today, the one from the right bank of Nisu valley. The base of this outcrop is covered in debrees from the uppermost parts of it. ........The collection from Natural Science Museum (over 5000 teeth) has being gathered in a relative short time (a few years) and this is very unusual for these formations. Today a long day of research prvides only 3-5 teeth and only with a piece of luck you can find 10-12. Maybe the old, supposed outcrops are now covered or the teeth found a hundred years age were found in very rich fossiliferous nests. |
