...............At
the end of the eighteenth century the town of Sibiu was the residence
of the Transylvanian governor and one of the important centers of researches
in natural sciences. The baron Samuel Bruckenthal mostly known as arts
lover had the biggest contribution in supportig this kind of researches.
He had also a big contribution in nature science knowledge by collecting
rocks, mineral and fossils from.all
the territory of Transylvania.
..............J.L.
Neugeboren was the curator of the Samuel Bruckenthal baron's
collections. First he was preoccupied by the mineral collection which
he classified by using the most modern criteria of that period. Since
1840 he was attracted more and more to the fossils. He made numerous trips
to Porcesti (the old name of Turnu Rosu) from where collected a big amount
of eocene fossils for the baron. The fossil sharks fauna offered him a
good material to write the first monography about sharks the first one
ever written in Romania: "Die vorweltichen Squalidenzahne aus dem
Grobkalke bei Porsesd am Altflus unveit Talmats". He was supported
in doing this paper by Franz Ritter Hauer the director of the Imperial
Museum of Viena. In order to write his monography Neugeoboren
used not only his collection but also those
of M.J. Akner and E. A. Bielz. He described 24 species new for science.
His paper work is impressive through the accuracy of the descriptions
and through the author's knowledge which was at the highest level of that
time.
...........In
the next years he moved his attention to other groups of fossils: foraminiferae
and miocene (tortonian) moluscs. This research made him collaborate with
important scientists from Europe like Fr. Karrer, A. D'Orbigny and E.
A. Reuss. Like a recognition of his activity Neugeboren
became a corespondent member of the Geological Imperial Institute from
Viena in 1 January 1885 and two years later in 2 january 1857 he was made
a member of honour of The Royal Belgian Academy.
...........His
collection was bought in 1910 by Natural Science Museum of Sibiu, but
because numerous movements and to the First World War evacuation part
of it was lost for ever.
............In
1887 Neugeboren dies at
Sibiu.
