The Megalodon Part 2
The picture at left shows the anatomy of a shark tooth. The features are similar to a Carcharocles Angustidens tooth, one of meg's ancestors. There is a  dental band, or bourlette. Adult meg teeth do not have cusps as they are lost when they were juveniles. Juvenile Great White shark also have cusps which are lost in  adulthood.
The origin of the Megalodon (Meg) has been hotly disputed amongst scientists and no conclusions have been made. Some believe that the species should be Carcharodon and some Carcharocles. The Carcharodon followers believe that Meg is closely related to the Great White Shark and the Carcharocles camp believe that Great Whites evolved from Makos and provide evidence of transitional Great White teeth and non serrated to partly serrated makos in between. They believe that Great Whites are only distantly related to Megs.  See the origin of the Great White Shark article pages for a full explanation. The Carcharocles followers believe Meg is descended from the otodus shark, which was a large shark about 30 feet long with large teeth with cusps.
