Product Liability and Failure Analysis
Ron Parrington
IMR Test Labs
February 9, 2005
The role of the failure analyst is to intertwine the variety of observations and data to determine the actual cause of how and why something broke.  Failure analysis is a valuable tool for companies in improving the design and quality of their product.  It is an equally powerful tool for both the plaintiff and defendant in product liability.

Ron briefly reviewed some types of failure modes and fracture appearances, discussed the role of the failure analyst in product liability, and reviewed nine case studies of investigations he had conducted.
Over 90 attendees from ASM, SAE, and ASQ were present for the dinner and technical presentation.
Our speaker, Ron Parrington (far right), discussing failure analysis with (R to L) Tim Cheek, Don Wulpi (distinguished in failure analysis and an ASM Fellow), and Nirmal Tolani.
