"Painting in the third dimension"
Mark Brogan
Painting in the Third Dimension
Painting as object is perhaps the ultimate dialectic of modern art. The classical narrative of modernist painting describes the move from representation to ever increasing abstraction, until the very distinction between painting and sculpture breaks down with artists like Johns, Rauschenburg and the Minimalists. If today the paintings of Van Gogh seem more engaging, more contemporary, than that of Cezanne, it is perhaps because he seems to bypass this intellectual logic in the pursuit of pure physicality; think of Sunflowers: faced with the overwhelming materiality of nature, the two dimensional representation grows outward, sculpted by impasto paintwork. This material sensuality is brilliantly captured in Robert Altmans film Vincent and Theo when Van Gogh, unable to decide which colour paints to buy, takes hand-scoops of each and eats them, contemplating their taste. There is something undeniably tasty in Mark Brogans paint-skin sculptures too. - like chocolate sauce, bubble gum or coloured liquorice. It brings to mind Oldenburgs vinyl lollipop and hotdog, but also his limp furniture. Indeed, Oldenburg shares Van Goghs exuberance and anxiety, but now in relation to a world of mass-produced pop consumables. One aspect of this is the creation of a shiny new universe of materials and colours spewed forth by the technology of petro-chemicals: domestic objects, toys and sexy new clothing. The sensuality of oil paint has been reflected since the Renaissance in its subject matter, our national galleries and museums bursting with nudes and food. What we find in Mark Brogan's work is this sensuality escaped from its reflection and embodied by its own stuff, but now with the fetishistic quality of shiny plastic attracting the light to its folds and creases. Unlike vinyl fetish-wear, however, Brogans works appear squishy, as if too physical a contact would not leave one unmarked by the works juice, protected within its skin. The pleasure here seems oral and anal rather than phallic - an idiotic infant joy. The irony of glossy pastel is like a garish cartoon of gooey food and bodily fluids. One work has two rolled paint skins twisted and knotted together, flopping from either side of a circular hole cut high in a door. One is shit-brown, the other a sickly aubergine, like the colour of baby food out of a blender. Other dumb pleasures are witnessed here: the pleasure of rolling malleable matter (e.g. plastecine) and of squeezing objects through holes. In a final ironic reversal, the paint-skin-stuff in Brogans latest work has begun forming in the shape of functional objects which lend themselves to such representation (a chandelier, electrical cable). This is perhaps merely playful, or something more sinister: from painting as object to object as painting.

expositieruimte. Bestaande categorieen en kaders worden hierdoor
vervreemd en overschreden. Kwade tongen beweren dat hij 'een designer'
is, weer anderen zeggen 'een curator'. Is hij een avant gardistisch
kunstenaar of een decorateur in opdracht, een idealist of slimme
zakenman ? Of allebei tegelijkertijd??
(06-248-66-536). De kunstenaar is aanwezig tijdens de opening.

Etalages: Licht Vuil en Particle Collision
Rachel Bacon
De Maastrichtse kunstenaar Rachel Bacon thematiseert
in haar werk tegenstellingen zoals licht/donker,

Nu is
