On Saturday,December 27,2003 John and his older brother Billy
went hunting in Glen Jean, West Virginia. After looking for a while they went
back to the truck and John had forgotten his hat so they went back to get
it. While they were going down the trail in single file not even 10 mph, a
deer and a few dogs ran out infront of them coming from off of a hill. Of
course John tried to swirve to try to miss the animals, but it was still
slick from the snow and ice, so when he swirved, he slid off of a steep
hill.
He rode all the way to the bottom, until he got thrown off and hit his face on the front rack of the ATV.
Billy went down and John wasn't
breathing, Billy got him breathing again and called 911, and then called my
dad and the rest of the family. After around 30 minutes the helicopter
finally arrived and air-lifted John to Charleston Area Medical Center. When
they did observations they said he had broken his jaw in 6 different
places, and every single bone behind his nose was broken, and the worst...a
major artery in the back of his neck that sent blood to the left side of his
brain was shattered.
The doctors said if only he would've hit he head about
an inch on either side he could've had a chance. He was on life-support,and
in the ICU. He tried his hardest to live, we had hopes, but somehow we knew
there was no chance.
On the 4th day of him being in there they did 1 last
gag-reflex test to see if there was any brain activity at all. There
wasn't...so at around 1 or 2 on December 30th, they pulled the plug. He had a
few friends and a lot of family to be there before and while they did it.
