nowadays the credit for the invention of pants is primarily given to William Pants, Although William Pants did bring pants about the mainstream he is not the actual inventor. about twenty years before Pants' birth a man by the name of Richard saxton drew up the original blue prints and prototype for pants.
In 1564 Richard Saxton was a young clothing designer taking risks with new designs for clothing. all his life he had innovatied invented new designs. among some of his works are the pocket, the zipper, and mini skirt (one of my personal favorites). Richard was up late one night working on some drawings of some modifications of a toga when the idea hit him. he drew vigorously differents angles sizes and styles. he could make a complex product out of a cheap material. most dresses and togas of that day costed about 75 cents, a modern day equivelant to 200 dollars.Pants would be easy to manufacture and could retail for about 10 cents. now he had something to for every class of people from the peasants to the royal class. before the invention of pants anyone below royalty simpy walked around naked. william called his product, not pants but second skin. because it was the first produst of the day to actually wrap around the entirety of each individual leg, like skin.
the next day Richard took his drawing to work with him, he was immediatley turned down by his boss and laughed at by his co-workers. But Richard ignored them, he knew that pants would bring him fame and soon be the rave among the young, old, poor, and rich; so he left his job and began work on his invention he started promoting pants with revolutionized advertisements, pants soon became the work of his life. but no one seemed to be interested. was he showing it to the wrong audience or was his idea meant to fail.
it was not untill almost forty years later when pants would make it into mainstream. most of Saxton's life had passed him by and he was but a poor man trying to sell his wears on a street corner, not even the nude peasants would purchase any of his clothes. Richard was growing old and saw that his pants idea would never work. he decided to give it up as a lost dream and go to work for a for john ickly a local fashion designer. on the staff was johns nephew William Pants. his uncle had given him the job after williams repeated failed attempts at a normal job, he would always do something to get fired and no one wanted to hire after a too long. so his uncle gave in and gave him a minimal job at his company.
it was late one night after everybody had left when william was snooping around the offices. he walked into Richards drawing room and looked at what he had been working on. he opened his desk and found richards drawings for pants. he took them out and took them home with him, he had an idea that would change his uncles whole perspective of him. the next day at a staff meeting william introduced the blue prints that he had stolen from saxton and showed them off as his own. no one in the staff cared much. but his uncle was glad that the boy was atleast finally trying to get something done, and went out of his way to see that pants, as richard had introduced them as, became the new rage.
the minute Saxton saw the blue prints he imediatley recognized them and tried to tell how william had stolen them from him. but everyone refused hear his voice. Saxton went to the head of the company and explained to him how william had stolen his idea, but his boss wouldnt hear it. finally Saxton confront william himself and told him to give him back the blue prints and give him the cradit he deserved. william refused. a fight broke out between the two ending in security escorting Saxton out of the office building. the next day william was infromed that he was fired. he didnt take any of his stuff with him.
Saxton returned to the streets where he would die an old poor man.
while saxton was living out the remainder of his life, Mr. ickly had promoted pants to head of staff because of his new idea. pants was growing bigger and bigger by the second. ickly had to keep the factory on overtime just to meet the publics demands. since the company was running so smoothly ickley was soon to retire and leave pants with the company.
meanwhile, on the street, it seemed everytime saxton opened his eyes another person was wearing "skin" or as they had become known as "pants".
all of the credit was given the william pants while saxton was put out on the street, the real inventor of pants is not known by many, but now atleast you know.
