Pets Unit Study

Read "Because of Winn-Dixie" by Kate DiCamillo. The story is about a little girl, Opal, and her need/want for a pet (Winn-Dixie).

Make Dog biscuits.

  • 1 cup corn meal
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/3 cup oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup sunflower seeds

Mix and knead. Roll out and cut with cookie cutters (we found a bone shaped one and a dog shaped one for .50) or just shape as you wish. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes. Cool completly.

Discuss the responsibilities of pets (dogs, cats, birds, gerbils/hansters/guinea pigs, snakes, ferrets, rabbits, etc.). I got a free video from the AKC about responsibilities associated with dogs.

Talk about safety around dogs (the above link has a link to a package on safety as well, from AKC).

If you have pets, have child be responsible for primary care taking. Washing the bowl, brushing them, helping bathe them, feeding them, walking or exercising them.

We have a biweekly science class, these are some of the activities we did with them.
    Graphing--Who has what?
    Talk about how dogs age.
Talk about why some animals wouldn't make good pets and how to determine what type of pet might be right for you.
How do dogs differ from humans?
We also had a friend bring their pet rabbit, and a neighbor brought her birds. The birds were great, the kids all got a chance to hold the birds on their fingers. They were thrilled.
Another good activity, visit an SPCA and talk about how the animals there all need good homes and how a lot of them ended up there because people didn't make wise decisions about which pet would be right for them. It is also great to do some volunteer work at these places, or do a collection amongst a group. For my younger daughter's next birthday, we'll be collecting things for the local SPCA (where we adopted our dog from) instead of birthday presents for her. 1
