Ocean Unit Study

Crafts:

Paper Bag Whale
Supplies:

Brown paper bag

Blue construction paper

Crayons, markers or paint

Stickers

Old newspaper

String
Allow children to decorate bag with crayons, markers, paint and stickers. Open bag and stuff it with newspaper (or wadded up junk mail!). Tie off the "tail" with some string. Cut a "spout" of water from the blue construction paper. Glue the spout to the whales head.

Paper Plate Jellyfish
Supplies:

2 paper plates per child

paint

stapler

glue

streamers
Cut streamers to desired length. Allow child to paint the outside of both paper plates. Let dry. Staple along outer edge of the plates holding them together. Have child glue on the streamers for tentacles.

Tissue Paper Fish
Supplies:

Fish pattern on construction paper

Scissors

glue

various colors of tissue paper cut into "scale" size pieces
Have child cut out fish pattern. Glue the tissue paper scales onto the fish.

Worksheets:

We did a lot of the worksheets from Learning Page while we did this unit. I also used their cut-outs as bulletin board displays. They have some great units.

Field Trip:

To the beach!

Food:

Octopi hot dogs! Cut the hot dog lengthwise, 4 (or 8 if you're ambitious) times. When you boil them in water, the "legs" will curl up. My girls got a kick out of eating Octopus for lunch!

Science:

Salt water vs. Fresh water-

we tasted and smelled both

we poured some of both in an ice cube tray to find out which one would freeze the fastest

Oil and Water-

Put cooking oil and water in a plastic bottle, shake it up and then watch it seperate. Let the kids try to shake it hard enough to keep it together.

Pour some water, then a small amount of oil into a large bowl. Add some plastic ocean animals. Explain about Oil tankers, and an oil spill in the ocean. Have the children try to clean the oil off of the animals.
