Series Two: 1999/2000

New Features

Opening the Gate

There were a couple of new features added to the show in series two which helped make the second series even better than the first. The first of these was the opening titles, which saw Melinda waving to the Professor, and Boyard looking very stern... The music of the opening titles also changed, to the dance remix of the original (this was definitely a good move). This theme is available for dowloading on our Downloads page. Once the team had landed at the Fort, Melinda would say "Hello" and so on at the landing area, and then she and the team ran into the entrance of the Fort where they had to open the Fort gates by pulling a metal sculpture up out of the way. The gong then went, and the quest began with two key games, followed by a riddle.

The Leaderboard

The other addition to the show came at the end, after a team had been successful in collecting Boyard's gold. Their winning total was added to the "Leader Board", which displayed the five teams who collected the greatest amount of gold.

Team Profiles

An example of a
competitor's profile from series two

Series still had one profile for each competitor at the start of the show, however they were a bit different to ones from series one as you can see in the picture. The picture of the contestant in action moved to the foreground, with the background comprising of a close-up of their head. Series Two saw teams from England, Wales and Scotland competeing.

Costumes

A selection of
costumes from series two

Again, in series two the contestant's costumes were produced by USA Pro. The colour scheme was basically the same, apart from orange was out, and pink was in. The Fort Boyard logo was displayed clearly on each garment, with the USA Pro one just visible on a selected few. There were lots more female ones than there are male, as you can see in this comprehensive guide.

The Code Word

The correct code word

A slight change to the second series was at the end of the show, after the team had made their guess at the code word on the Treasure Room floor. If they were correct then whilst they collected the gold Boyard ran through all the clues, and how they fitted in with the code word (like series one). However, if they got it wrong, Boyard showed what the word was, how it fitted in with all the clues, and then showed the word on a computer version of the word grid (see picture).

Comings and Goings

All were very sad (NOT) to see that Jaba the Pirate had left the series. His pathetic presence in all those (two) games was not be missed. Also gone, and almost forgotten were The Tiger Master (who for some reason didn't seem to fit in) and the original Mud-Wrestling Woman. Alas, with the loss of her clue game we also said a sad Au-Revoir to the fair Arianne, who cheered up the male viewers with her antics. Apparently the French show which consists of more games than the UK version now uses her maze for other things.

Melinda is introduced on the new opening sequence

Although the number of inhabitants was in decline, we welcomed to the Fort "Monique" who took the Tiger Master's place, and the new Mud-Wrestler who looks more like a bloke than a woman. She's a lot stronger, but who else missed her predicessor? Lets hope she'll be back soon.

Celebrity Special

The Celebrity Team

It was a great surprise for all fans to see the first U.K. Celebrity Special on Channel Five on Boxing Day 1999. The Celebrity team consisted of: Sam Kane from Brookside, boxing great Frank Bruno (team captain), Olympic gold medallist swimmer and former Gladiators star "Amazon" Sharon Davis, ITV sports presenter Gabi Yorath and Glenda McKay from Emmerdale. The show length was extended so that the team had to get five keys and the code word (instead of four) in sixty minutes. Highlights included the lovely Gabi Yorath playing Water Buckets extremely unsuccessfully (but we'll forgive her seeing as she's so good-looking), Sam Kane giving Boyard the new nick-name of "Well 'Ard" and Frank Bruno having a go at Jacque and Jules for being too pushy!! (At last someone did something!!) The success of the show led to Channel 5 commissioning two Celebrity shows for series three.
